I am very excited about this because Ive never actually seen the movie. I would also be excited for Pinocchio though since I dont recall ever really seeing that movie either. I just wish they wouldnt only do 2 big releases a year cause Oct 2008 seems SO far away

lol yeah I know. There were only a couple I was real into and that was Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and The Lion King. Other then that nothing really hit me. I think the only ones I ever owned were Mermaid, Lion King, Aladdin, Cinderella, Snow White, Bambi, and thats it. I was never big into the princess movies and Bambi makes me cry too much so I havent watched that for probably over ten years. im catching up now. lol

Im trying to work myself up to watch fox and the hound 2....i cry so much with the first one Im scared to watch the second lol

then of course there are others I just havent bothered to buy even though they are fairly cheap...Hercules, Hunchback etc....just cause they dont interest me as much as the others Ive been buying....I want to buy them, I just dont have an interest in them yet....but Sleeping Beauty....I really really really want that. Ive always thought she was beautiful, my favorite moment is when she has the half pink half blue dress but I dont even know how she gets a half pink half blue dress lol (and dont tell me! I wanna see the movie!) I also believe maleficent to be my favorite villian lol even though I havent seen her in action lol

you should really get Herc and Hunchback since they are good films that flopped for some reason. but don't Fox and the Hound 2 since it has a horrible story that tears them apart even worse than the original. and i never got into Bambi eather but i never cried during the death scene.

I, too, had a terrible time watching Bambi as a kid! And Ursula from The Little Mermaid scared the hell out of me! lol

Anyway, I bought a copy of Sleeping Beauty SE a month ago and I haven't watched it yet. I know I've seen it as a child but I can't remember a thing about that movie. I'm still waiting for the perfect night to watch it!! :P I want to be alone so that I can fully enjoy it.

I'm happy that they are going to release it soon in PE. I will surely buy it on DVD, not quite sure about the Blu-ray. But I would have prefered 101 Dalmatians to come out first! Can't wait for that one!

I thought it was 101 Dalmations in March 2008 and Sleeping Beauty in October 2008?

101 Dalmatians will come first, in March 2008, and Sleeping Beauty will follow in October 2008.

Hmm... It seems a lot of people are thinking of buying a Blu-Ray player at some time or other this year or the next. But don't forget a vital thing!

Your TV.

A Blu-Ray player with a traditional CRT TV is useless. The video quality will not appear to be better in any way, because DVDs already look fine on CRT TVs. To appreciate the beauty of Blu-Ray you will need an HD-Ready TV. Therefore, if you're intending to go the Blu way, you must also go the flippin' expensive HD TV way.

Anyone have the same problem? I don't see myself owning a Blu-Ray player anytime soon, because with that I'll have to get an HD TV, and I certainly can't afford it!

Actually, HD-TVs are pretty inexpensive these days. You can get a decent one for under $1000, which right now is cheaper than what blu-ray players cost!

Also, it woudlnt' bother me if I didn't have an hd-tv right away. I'd love to be able to watch the extra bonus features on the blu-ray discs, and I can do that with any old tv!

Don't worry. They are drastically dropping the prices on HDTVs. I never thought I'd be able to buy one - and we found a pretty decent one at Sam's Club last Thanksgiving for $1100. I bet that you'll be able to buy one by Christmas for $600. Now, I can't wait to buy a BETTER one....because mine's not 1080p.

you don't need an HDTV to enjoy all these things since i still have the same tv i've had since i was a baby and it still works fine with my PS3 so i don't get why people are always saying you need a new tv to watch your all acting like it's a gameboy trying to play a nintendo DS game.

Well, you don't need to buy a new TV because you can watch Blu-rays on a regular TV. BUT you won't see it in HD, either - so it won't differ from DVD quality in any way. Just like you can watch color programs on a black&white TV, you just won't see them in color...

What needs to be pointed out, however, is that although flat screen TVs are becoming cheaper, not all of them are actullay full HD (1080), which is Blue-ray's rasolution. If you watch Blue-ray on a TV that is HD ready (about 770 resolution), you won't be able to enjoy the full quality, either.

Blu-Ray is one thing, of course, but as for standard DVD: I really don't see how they could possibly improve on the Special Edition, which, further, was released just a few years ago ...

I can see them making a big deal about Blu-Ray but making this a Platinum, when many of us are still waiting for Pinocchio and Fantasia to make it to Platinum???

I guess the only way it makes sense is that they want to have something available for those without Blu-ray players to get, so in that sense I guess it's sensible marketing ... but it really rots that we have to wait for 2 of their best all-time films to come to the Platinum editions.

Wonder what the delay is with Pinocchio especially?

I don't remember which DVD it was in, but there was an insert advertising "The Aristocats" 2-disc DVD, and that's not coming out when it was advertised to. Or when "Tarzan" was supposed to come out in a 2-disc Special Edition, but it really came out in a 1-disc SE. The inserts aren't always reliable.

Bah. I'll be buying the regular DVD.

No way in hell will I waste my money on Blu Ray player while format wars are going on. Yes Blu ray has the upper hand over HD-DVD at the moment, but it still has a long, long way to go before it replaces DVD as the standard; and there is of course the huge possibility that it will not accomplish that. I'm not going to invest in player or any films 'till it has alot more than a 1-5% hold on the market. 500+ dollars on a player that is still early in its life and isn't garunteed to become a standard (and that I wouldn't be able to get its full potential because I still can't afford an HDTV) isn't money I'm willing to spend.

In terms of bonus features, I personally wouldn't mind seeing more retrospective interviews, a more in-depth and cohesive documentary (in the 45-50 minute range), and probably some of the deleted scenes/songs presented on their own (as opposed to simply being part of the commentary).

There's plenty of material already available from the 1993 Deluxe Laserdisc:

PINOCCHIO: The Making Of A Masterpiece - a 47 minute documentary hosted by Robby Benson. They could simply re-edit/update the doc with additional interviews and put it in the Platinum Edition (IIRC, they did this for the laserdisc docs made Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Cinderella on their Platinums).

Still Galleries
-Gustaf Tenggren's Studies For PINOCCHIO
-Early Conceptual Drawings
-Inspirational Paintings
-Conceptual Drawings For Scenes Never Used
-Animators' Models
-Animators' Model Sheets
-Color Call-Outs
-Background Paintings
-Production Stills
-Original Publicity Materials
-PINOCCHIO Comic Strip

Storyboards With Corresponding Film Sequences - this found its way in the R2 DVD, it's a basic split-screen featurette of storyboard vs. final film.

Theatrical Trailers - THREE, woohoo!
-1940 Original Theatrical Trailer
-1984 Re-Release Trailer
-1992 Re-Release Trailer

So even if there was no new commentary recorded or new featurettes produced, a Pinocchio: Platinum Edition already has a sizable amount of material ready for a DVD release.

In addition to the laserdisc stuff, they could also include the Jiminy Cricket shorts, the Figaro/Cleo shorts, deleted songs known to exist, and if they can find them, the original Mel Blanc voice tracks for Gideon (when the character was originally set to speak in the film). Plus, Dickie Jones is still around and could do a new interview for the set (like how Bruce Reitherman did one for The Jungle Book).

It was on the market for a good 3+ years (November 2000 to January 2004), and by Disney's revised-in-2003 guidelines for OOP-ness (5 years instead of 10), it's due out again in 2009. So there's really nothing that's "taking so long" for a release, it's estimated to come out right on time. Unless you'd rather it come out in 2014. :P
