Foreign Celebrities; Make Your Favourite Star Popular!

Post by Aladdin from Agrabah »

Okay this is something I was thinking about to do months ago, but I don't know if it's gonna be succesfull because it may take a long of your time. What I'm suggesting is that you make a presentation of a celebrity you like- something similar to the Art Discussion Series- but not a worlwide known celebrity, like Madonna or Michael Jackson. If you're from Germany, for example, let us know everything about the biggest star in Germany! If you're from America...it will be hard for you to choose a star that is unknown because almost every American actor or singer is worldwide known! :D You can try and find someone that is sure that the rest of the world is still not aware of! This way, we'll have a beautiful intercultural Walk of Fame!!
The Presentation should include the star's bio, his future plans (if they'te known), photos and everything you think it may sound interesting.I hope you'll enjoy it!

Helena Paparizou
Image
Greek Singer
Genres:Pop, Dance, Ethnic
Date of Birth:31 January 1982
Years Active: 1999-present

Helena was born in Sweden to Greek immigrant parents. Her artistic talents and eagerness to excel became apparent very early and she was soon involved in singing, dancing and acting, training in combination with her academic studies at school. At the age of seventeen, she joined childhood friend and fellow, Nikos Panagiotidis, also a Greek immigrant to Sweden, to form the band called "Antique". Their debut single "Opa Opa" became a huge hit and they were soon selected as Greece's representatives for the Eurovision Song Contest 2001 in Copenhagen (Eurovision is an annual song contest in which most of the European countries take place in order to win the competition and host the event next year. The best song is selected by televoting from audiences all over Europe). The band reached a third place with the song "I would Die for You". "Antique" broke up in 2003 on good terms and Helena set about going solo. Her first single "I don't Want you Here Anymore" from her first album called "Priority" made strong sales and received a Gold certification in Greece.
Because of her popularity in Greece where she ended up spending more and more time, Helena was approached to represent the country for a second time in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005. She performed the hit "My Number One", which, luckily, turned out to be the contest's actual number one! She won the competition, voted by viewers all over Europe, and brought the contest to Greece for 2006. Since then, her popularity kept growing.
On July 2005, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden caused controversy by placing his hand on Helena's back, lower than what is socially acceptable- it happened after she had performed at his daughter's birthday celebrations; according to the Royal Court "his hand slipped".
Helena's second album called "There's a Reason" was released in Greece on April 12, 2006. Several tracks from the album will be contained (in English) in her upcoming (October 2006) first-time ever international album, and released in counties such as France, UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Japan, China, United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia and more. Her winning song, "My Number One", was released in the US on 22 August and is currently at No11 on the Billboard Dance Charts. Singles from her upcoming international album are already hits in Greece and Sweden- songs like "Mambo!", "The Game of Love", "Gigolo" and "Heroes". The single "Heroes" is the official song for the 2006 European Championships in Athletics held in Gothenburg, Sweden in August.
During the summer, Helena was a special guest in Anastacia's concert in Sweden. She has also previously recorded a song called "Light" for the Greek dub of Barbie's recent movie, "The 12 Dancing Princesses".

Yay! Helena Paparizou. I love "My Number One" and its the most played track on my Eurovision: Congratulations 1981 - 2005 album.

She gave a really good performance in 2005, and I must say Athens was a really good host in 2006.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

Great idea for a topic. Too many international stars go unnoticed due to the amount of American stars constantly dominating everything.

Anywa does an actrice count? Because Holland is totally into Carice van Houten right now.

She's an incredibly gifted actress, who just won the dutch equivalent of the oscar for the the third time. I found some info on her on IMDB:
Image

Carice (Anouk) van Houten was born in Leiderdorp (near Leiden) on 5 September 1976. Her parents are Margje Stasse (on the board of Dutch educational TV) and writer and broadcaster Theodore van Houten. She is the elder sister of actress and designer Jelka van Houten. When she was five her father took her to a screening of Abel Gance's epic Napoleon which fascinated her. She has demonstrated great interest in cinema since. Carice convincingly demonstrated her acting talents at the Bonifatius Lyceum high school, Utrecht, in the early 90s. One of her first parts was the title role in Hugo Claus's play Tijl Uilenspiegehel. She also developed a skill in clarinet playing. In 1995 she was rather uniquely accepted by both the Maastricht and Amsterdam drama academies, and started her TV career (Labyrint, VPRO TV 1997) as a student of the Kleinkunst Academie Amsterdam. There she was awarded the 1999 Pisuisse Prize, and the 2000 Top Naeff Prize for her theatre work. A day before the Top Naeff Prize she was awarded the 'Gouden Kalf' as best TV actress in Martin Koolhoven's Suzy Q. In 2001 she starred in Amnesia by the same director. In September 2000 she joined the Noord-Nederlands Toneel starring as a both singing and acting Polly in a contemporary staging of the Threepenny Opera to fabulously stunning reviews. Her great talent for dark comedy was demonstrated in a parody on City Lights' blind girl in the Amsterdam Kleine Komedie. Carice is a great admirer of American silent comedies - particularly Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy - although she can display an equally dramatic talent. In 2001 she made Minoes, in the title role of the cat-woman after Annie M.G. Schmidt. In the 2001-02 season she won the main role in a theatre production of Schmidt's musical Foxtrot.
For Paul Verhoeven fans, she's the star of his new Dutch film Zwartboek (Black Book) of wich Sony Pictures has acquired the distribution rights for the United States. The film is great but she's simply brilliant. She's flawless. I hope thr rumors about ehr being approached by American filmstudio's are true, because I truly believe she has what it takes to make it big. I believe a Variety article even referred to her as being a brilliant actress. Don't let the fact that it's a foreign language film stop you from seeing it, she's amazing as is the film.

stepping off my soapbox. This film made me a fan of her:

Topher Grace

Image

Biography (Credit: TopherGraceFan.com)
Topher Grace was born in New York City on July 19th 1978, and was raised in Darien, Connecticut and Massachusetts with his sister Jenny Grace (three years younger) by John and Patricia Grace. His first name is Christopher but he hated being called too commonly "Chris" in school so in seventh grade he decided to change it to "Topher" because he wanted to be original. He attended school in Massachusetts for two years where he began his acting career in musicals such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat and The Pirates of Penzance. Topher also tried his first shot at directing with a choose-your-own-adventure style movie starring his classmates.

He attended New Hampshire's boarding school Brewster Academy, New York's private School of Theater Neighborhood Playhouse, the University of Southern California and Los Angeles's Groundlings Improvisation School. He dropped out of USC after finishing his freshman year to start his career in That 70s Show at age 20. He was cast in That 70s Show because the show's creators, Bonnie and Terry Turner, had seen him play Pseudolus in a high-school production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (their daughter attended the same high school as Topher). Apart from school plays, Topher had absolutely no acting experience before landing the role of Eric Forman, a level-headed and predominantly wholesome high school student coming of age in Me-Decade Wisconsin.

After the second season of That 70s Show, he broke into movies filming his first movie in summer 2000. He made an impressive film debut with his supporting role as Seth Abrahams in Traffic, Steven Soderbergh's epic and widely acclaimed look at the American war on drugs opposite Erika Christensen and Michael Douglas. This role marked a drastic turn from Eric Forman, and garnered critical praise. Topher received positive notices for his work in the film, which cast him as a cocky prep school boy who turns his girlfriend (Erika Christensen) on to heroin and cocaine. His acclaimed work in Traffic saw his popularity further increased, acting as another testament to the beginnings of a promising career. The movie amassed 4 Academy Awards and 2 Golden Globe Awards.

In 2001 Topher had a cameo role in Ocean's Eleven, whose director, Steven Soderbergh, also directed Traffic. Topher played himself, but an exagerrated version along with some other Hollywood teen stars such as Holly Marie Combs (Charmed), Shane West (Once and Again), Joshua Jackson (Dawson's Creek) and Barry Watson (7th Heaven). He showed more of his sarcastic tongue-in-cheek side in the film and got to work with the likes of George Clooney and Brad Pitt. Even though it was small, the role got him attention from some critics.

In 2002 Topher had somewhat of a year off, only appearing as a voice in Roberto Benigni's English-dubbed version of Pinocchio. However, Topher signed for another supporting role as Tommy Donegal in Mona Lisa Smile in 2002. The movie directed by Mike Newell and starring Julia Roberts was filmed in winter 2002.

After Mona Lisa Smile, Topher obtained his first leading role in the romantic comedy Win a Date with Tad Hamilton, starring Kate Bosworth and Josh Duhamel. The production started on May 2003 and was wrapped up in July 2003.

After that, Topher got another leading role in the independent movie P.S, adaptation of Helen Schulman's novel. The filming of this romantic dramedy co-starring Laura Linney which began in September 2003 finished four months later in January 2004. Topher, as the work-aholic that he is, started shooting In Good Company two months later, a production written, produced and directed by the Weitz brothers where he stars opposite Dennis Quaid. Both of these movies got him further more recognition and praise and he even won two awards: the National Board of Review Award for Best Male Breakthrough Performance and the New Power Award.

In May 2005, he decided to quit the show after seven seasons playing the main character of Eric Forman and left the West Coast to move to his newly bought apartment in New York and to take a well-deserved break after a very hectic schedule juggling between movies and weekly tapings.

He will get back to work in January 2006 in the third installement of the Spiderman movies, where he is set to play a vilain.

As for his love life, we don't know much about it since he likes to keep it private. However, he's been rumoured to have been dating actress Anne Hathaway for awhile (2001-2002) and best-friend Ginnifer Goodwin (2002-present)...Now whether that is true or not, it's all up to you and your imagination...But he's said countless times he had a crush on french actress Audrey Tautou from "Amelie", and that one day they'll marry.

PatrickvD, your presentation was indeed very interesting! I've seen and enjoyed some of Paul Verhoeven films, but I haven't seen that one. Carice van Houten seems really beautiful. As long as this movie arrives here, I'm going to check it out.
Prince Ali, I can recall Topher Grace playing in Mona Lisa Smile. But this is really interesting, that he's gonna be Venom in Spiderman 3!! Wow! He really is gonna be very famous after that movie! :)

[2099net drums fingers and sighs as he waits for Ichabod to post an entry on Dame Jennifer of Saunders or Lady Su of Pollard]

JOANNA LUMLEY

An aspiring actress, she first came to fame as a model in the 'swinging' 60s London where she was photographed by the greats, including her friend the late Lord Lichfield. She was the designer Jean Muir's muse & house model for several years before carving a career as a freelance model where she became one of the top 10 most-booked models of the 60s. She was that lovely.

Her big acting break came when she played "the English Girl" in the Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service, alongside Diana Rigg who had previously starred in the popular television show The Avengers.

As fate would have it, in 1976 Lumley was cast as Purdey in the Avengers revival The New Avengers. While critical reaction to the show was mixed, Lumley became an overnight sensation, much in the way previous Avengers girls had in the 60s. And why not? She was lovely, and especially lovely as Purdey.

After the series ended Lumley took a role in another cult television series Sapphire and Steel as Sapphire. Sapphire was a mysterious ephemeral being who along with Steel, investigated breaches in time and space (while looking lovely).

It was during the early 1990s that Joanna had her second burst of fame and acclaim playing chain-smoking, boozing, cocaine-sniffing sexpot Patsy Stone in the wildly successful Absolutely Fabulous. Her role as Patsy in AbFab is regarded as one of the greatest female comic performances ever, earning Lumley a stream of awards, including several BAFTAs.

In a stroke, her image was reinvented. Previously associated with somewhat upper-class parts, ideally suited for he sophisticated voice and style, Ab Fab showed what a talented comedienne Joanna was. In addition, as well as being lovely, Joanna is not afraid to appear unattractive on screen if the role demands it – she has no fear of the camera, something that only the most lovely of people have the confidence for.

Since this radical reinvention, Joanna has taken many other comic roles on TV and film, as well as continuing her serious acting… mainly in the theatre.

Today, Joanna Lumley is classed as a National Treasure, with an appeal that spans generations due to her diverse body of work (and being lovely).

* When Joanna Lumley played Purdey in The New Avengers, her bob-cut was popular. It would often be referred to as "The Purdey Bob" and it was lovely.

* You may recognise the lovely Joanna Lumley from such films as Trail of the Pink Panther, Curse of the Pink Panther, James and the Giant Peach and Ella Enchanted. You may recognise her lovely voice in films such as Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, The Magic Roundabout [UK version of Doogal].

* Joanna Lumley had a role in Eurotrip, as the manageress of the Dutch Youth Hostel. but this was unfortunately cut out of the final film. Her performance can be seen on the DVD in the deleted scenes. She's obviously the best part of the film, because she's lovely.

* She recently teamed up with the writer/director Hugo Blick for the series of acclaimed monologues 'Up In Town' (2002) which were critically regarded as the performance of a lifetime (because she was lovely).

* Joanna Lumley sounds like Joanna Lovely. And she is lovely. Lovely Joanna Lumley. She is, in fact, lovely.

I'm from Holland, but I haven't seen Zwartboek yet. But I loved her in Minoes. It's a great film, so I bought the DVD. According to IMDB the title in the USA is Undercover Kitty. That's a really bad title.. but the film is great. :D

Oh, I loved Delta Goodrem's "Innocent Eyes", especially the song "Not Me, Not I"! One of the sweetest voices ever, very touching and emotional! I didn't know she isn't famous in the US, it's really a pitty. (By the way, I love your Christina Aguilera avatar! :D )
Anyway, to make an update to my presentation, you can find two of Helena's most succesful songs in YouTube, with their videos of course. For her live performance of "Mambo!". here:

For the music video of "Gigolo" here (it's half-greek, half-english):

And here is the cover of her upcoming international english album which will contain both songs:

Foreign Celebrities...I got nothin'.

Post by Disney Duster »

Well, Al from Ag, Helena Paparizou has an impressive popularity. I really liked the song "Mambo!", but I don't think she's an exceptional singer, and I'm not into celebrating celebrities. It's like worshiping people as gods! I just don't like it. I unfortunately am from America, and even then, since I don't obsess over celebrities, I don't know much about them!

But I do know I like Nicole Kidman. A very good movie to see is Dogville that she stars in, but beware it is a very artsy film where you have to use your imagination for the sets! And it also has a lot of killing at the end...and some sex here and there (but no frontal nudity). It's about a town that is very boring and a guy named Tom (who is very boring) seems to be looking for something exciting. Grace (Nicole Kidman, not boring!) comes into his life and changes things in the town, very slowly. But sometimes you should let sleeping dogs (the town) lie...

I'm sorry, I don't have anything to offer, except that Carice van Houten sounds amazing!

I agree with you, Disney Duster, that noone should worship celebrities as gods, but I'm not! I actually only buy the products I REALLY like and I think it is a pleasure to talk about a person that impresses me with his/her abilities....I don't think it's so bad. I'm not celebrating celebrities, I'm just admiring a person just like I would admire a sexy girl from the school or something. And Helena may not have more abilities than an average singer, but I like her as a woman, I like her songs and from what I've seen from the way she talks to people on tv, she must be kind too. Why not admire her? I could even make a thread about Disney Duster to show him my admiration and my respect! It's not worshiping, is it? :)
Anyway, I've seen Dogville!!! It's just PERFECT!! And Nicole Kidman is one of my favourites, I've liked her since I was a child!

Okay, well, I just think some people get too into other people. I just don't see what's the point of knowing so much about some one else you haven't even met...but I realize that you're right, you're not worshiping other people. Some do, but not you. There are even times when I've fallen in love and tried to find out everything I could about someone, so I know how you feel. I just think it's Helena's music that makes her good, not really her singing, if that makes sense, the notes, the beat, the instruments. But she's a great PERFORMER, I'll admit that. I'm glad you like Dogville, and Nicole Kidman! :D

Wow, I actually thought she was only famous here in Australia. Guess everywhere knows her. Except sadly the US. But actually, a lot of the people here in Australia think she's pretty boring, and I must admit, she kind of is. She's a great singer, but she is quite boring and dresses a bit like a grandma.
