I just got done watching everything. It's one of the best Disney 2-disc DVD's, but could have been better. The most interesting thing about it to me was that they had several interviews with Catherine Beaumont, the voice of Alice, but they didn't bother to make a making of. Also, in a future release, it would be nice to have a comentary with Catherine Beaumont and audio clips of the animators and Walt Disney like they did with "Snow White." Also, some of the animators are still alive and could provide comments for it. One of the most interesting things to me was the clips from the "Fred Waring Show." It was a little weird watching actors who definateley haden't seen the film yet (it wasn't out at the time) attempt to play these characters. Espicially the mouse from the mad tea party scene. It was a girl and she played it with a high pitched squeek and tried to be cute. They also have people dressed up as characters from the book who didn't make it into the final film. I'm also glad that Disney put the whole "One Hour In Wonderland" tv special on here. I hope they continue to do things like this. As for "I'm Odd," I wish they could have found the storyboards for it because it's weird watching clips of the film. It makes it feel more like a music video. The song is ok, but the digital music in the background is really weird. I didn't bother with the children's games yet, but I will someday. As for the insert that advertises the other "Masterpiece Editions," It lists them in this order: "Pocahontas," "Merry Poppins," and "Lilo & Stitch." Is it possible that this is the order which they will be released and the "Pocahontas" date will change?

I got my copy yesterday. The new restoration was the main reason I bought it, but I was still amazed by how much better the film looks compared to the previous release. I was sooo happy and relieved to get rid of the black backgrounds in the tea party scene, and to get to see the original colors of the film.
A question concerning the colors: what color is the door with the talking knob (the one that leads to Wonderland) on the Gold Collection DVD?
On my previous PAL disc it was dark brown, in the new DVD it's greyish green. I was wondering if the color change was a result of the bad print or the PAL transfer.
I know for a certainty that the green color is the original one. I had a discussion about it with a friend of mine years ago...

Alice In Wonderland

I got my copy on today. And I watched it with the family. We all loved it.

Thanks, the better transfer is the information I was looking for.
If anyone else has comments on the improvement of the sound and video from the Gold Collection I would appreciate it.

I also have to say I absolutely loved everything on disc 2.
"One Hour in Wonderland" is funnier than I remembered. I have only seen it once before. The sequences with Mr. Bergen and the puppets are charming.
Can anyone answer my question about the colors? The PAL transfer can't affect them that much alone, can it?

I didn't know Mr. Bergen was in the "One Hour in Wonderland" special. I've never seen it, so how would I know. I always loved him and his "friends."
I won't be able to pick a copy of Alice up until this weekend, but I'm so looking forward to it! I'm glad to see that people seem mainly positive about the release.

Watched the Hour in Wonderland special. That was really fun - I loved those Coke commercials, and it was cool to see Kathy Beaumont at such a young age. It was a little weird hearing the voice of Alice and Wendy come out of a real human being, LOL.
I loved Bobby Driscoll's desperateness whenever he asked the mirror anything.

DVD vs. LD
Does anybody posting here have both the DVD and LaserDisc versions? There has been a lot of complaining about Disney gypping us on content, so I'd like a feature by feature comparison by those who have actually viewed the DVD and LD special features and didn't just read the box and automaticallya ssume that the LD is a treasure trove and the DVD is a pale imitation.
I admit to not having owned the laserdisc, but being an avid Alice fan I've researched this enough to know what didn't make it to DVD. The DVD is missing:
* Music and Effects-Only Track
* Storyboard Gallery
* Concept Art Gallery (only partially shows up on DVD)
* Script Outlines from 1939 and 1943
* Radio Dramatization starring Kathryn Beaumont
* Promotional Radio Show
* Deleted Numbers (there were about 20 deleted numbers; only 6 show up on DVD)
The biggest disappointment to people was the concept art gallery which on DVD had 59 stills while on laserdisc had literally hundreds. It was inevitable from the start that the music-only track wouldn't show up, but no one really knows the reason why the majority of the audio features as well as the two story outlines failed to show up. It's most likely due to Disney being cheap and lazy as these features wouldn't have taken up much disc space on Disc Two at all. I've spoken enough about the lack of commentary or new featurette, so I won't go into that.

Picked up the 2 disc set today and I must say that I am rather disapointed. Now I must admit this is the first "Masterpiece" DVD that I bought so I dont know what the standard is but first off, WHY NO WIDESCREEN??????? I havnt seen anyone ask/comment/complain about this yet. Does it not exist? If thats the case then I recant my complaint. However, if there is a widescreen print somewhere, to leave it off is an absolute crime. Also, I must agree that the lack of a commentary and more specifically a new "Making Of" feature severely hinders the set. The movie itself is great, always has been. But this is the only SE Disney DVD that I had planned on buying after Roger Rabbit and I must say I was quite let down.
You answered your own question. There is no widescreen version. I believe the first Disney Animated Classic that took advantage of the widescreen format was Sleeping Beauty.hbking32 wrote:Now I must admit this is the first "Masterpiece" DVD that I bought so I dont know what the standard is but first off, WHY NO WIDESCREEN???????
