Bad News (Possible Disney Sequels)
First off-DON'T SHOOT THE MESSANGER!
But animated-news.com (a really good substitute for the
animated-movies.net) has just announced the following sequels are under consideration by Disney:
Cinderella III
Peter Pan III
The Jungle Book III
The Little Mermaid III
Sleeping Beauty II
I see a lot of potential with them all, but I'd rather not see any more sequels to Walt-era classics. Not that they aren't good, but it's wrong to posthumously disregard his wishes.

Storyboarded for over 2 years? Doesn't that sound combarable a Feature Animation project to you?L&S 2 does have 'some of the same crew", if you count the involvement of Chris Sanders, who has I believe approval of the story(he may have started it off, as well), any new designs, provides the voice of Stitch, and is also I think an exec producer. The directors are two story artists from FA. I think the producer also is from the feature dept. The story's been in the works(being storyboarded)for over 2 years, hardly a rush job, and the directors in the story process have adhered to the same methods they were used to at FA.
It has not been produced like a TV series. It is I think going to be animated in Australia.

Why all the handwringing over this? If these projects aren't very good, you don't have to view and/or purchase them. Regardless of how (or if) they turn out, I don't see how this could have any impact or "ruin" previously released films. You aren't really going to sit there watching Cinderella and think that if only they hadn't made Cinderella III, you could still enjoy the original, are you? Just choose to ignore these sequels if they are that offensive to you.

But as you've seen in the Sleeping Beauty SE, there was more than the original "happily ever after" in the original Sleeping Beauty fairytale. I'm not suggesting the original ending should be the basis for the sequel as it's pretty poor and obvious why it was ignored... but it's not such an "insult" to continue the story after all.SNERWW22785 wrote:I always thought of Sleeping Beauty as basically "sequel-proof"...that along with "Snow White". Those were two films which employed the classic 'happily ever after' with no real intrigue to follow. Oh well...
As long as the story is good, who cares? (and it can be good, but is most likely to be average or below sadly). I suspect this will (if it happens) be a mid-quel, set during the time of Brair Rose living with the faries in the woods.

At least we got Sleeping Beauty on DVD before the sequel came out, and at least it doesn't try to cross promote itself with that.
Can't you just see an I on the spine of the eventual Sleeping Beauty Platinum?

Er. No. Because I don't think there'll be a Platinum release for standard DVDs! I also think we won't get a Sleeping Beauty sequel.

I would love a DuckTales 2! We haven't seen Uncle Scrooge in anything new for a long time. Plus, the animation would be able to surpass the original, since it was made by Disney MovieToons.Boogedy Boo wrote:We Don't need Sleeping Beauty II Sleep Some More.
If Disney really wants to do more sequels. Here's some
Toy Story 3
Rescuers 3
DuckTales 2

I do not think Disney has the rights to do a Toy Story sequel.Boogedy Boo wrote:We Don't need Sleeping Beauty II Sleep Some More.

The Rescuers could definitely stand for another sequel or two. I do not know who owns the rights to the original series of books, but there are some good Mouse Prisoner's Aid Society stories there that could be made into movies.
A new Ducktales movie could be good too, if they had a good script.
Although people often talk about the lower quality of animation in the DTV sequels, it seems to me that the real problem with many of them is the quality of the story. If the story is good enough then I do not mind television grade Disney animation (excluding Teacher's Pet style).

I agree! More Ducktales! Where is THAT movie on DVD, hmmm?
As far as sequels to Walt era films... just don't buy them! I don't. Don't buy em or watch em. Again, I agree that there is something that's not right about them.
Sequels to some of the modern films I am more open to, as long as they look okay and make sense with the original story. For example, I am a big fan of Lilo and Stitch the series, the animation isn't bad, it's fun and has the spirit of the first film. As long as it has those qualities, I see no harm in it.
Now as far as the older films go, animation techniques then and now are completely different. You can't fully capture the feel of the older films using modern techniques, at least they haven't done it yet. They should leave those alone and produce new, original DTV movies or ones based off of their animated television shows.

^^^ I agree Maerj ^^^
I feel its artistically wrong to try and do a sequel to a film you didn't even have any involvment with in the first place. The original filmmakers are not here to approve - therefore, there shouldn't be any sequels to Walt-era films at all, IMO.
When it comes to the new era, I think it's fine artistically, because the original films have been made recently and the makers of the original are still around. However, just because I believe that doesn't mean I think the sequels are quality. Most of the time they are not.
But in the case of Lilo & Stitch (as you brought out - it maintains a good level of quality and the same feel/look as the original), The Lion King, and Aladdin sequels, IMO, I actually do think they are worthy successors, even if they don't actually reach high level of quality of the first film.

Well, if they're good movies and they're a way of continuing the 2D legacy, then I'm not opposed to them. I enjoyed Peter Pan 2 and Little Mermaid 2. I'm a bit concerned about Sleeping Beauty 2 because it could very easily turn out to be another crappy sequel such as "Cinderella 2" but who knows.
What I really want to see is an Alice in Wonderland 2. I think the animation should be done in a funky style a la "Emperor's New Groove" and it can use various stories from "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" as it's source material. Though unless the Alice: ME sells well I doubt we'll get a sequel.

Was the piss-poor animation in Cinderella 2, Atlantis 2, Hunchback 2, Aladdin 2 and 3, Pocahontas 2, etc etc etc "combarable" to a Feature Animation project to YOU? I never thought I'd live to see a Disney fan so utterly beholden to the Disney company they would defend anything that came out of the corporate poop chute.
