Lady and the Tramp's Villains

Post by Jay »

Discuss what you like and dislike about the villains of LATT.
Aunt Sarah
Si & Am
The Rat

Also someone on an earlier villain thread asked about a Silly Symohny villains thread and I'll do one shortly.

What about the dogcatcher? Although I don't think Aunt Sarah or her two Siamese cats are really villainous, they just don't like dogs. I think the only true villain in LATT is the rat

I see the cats as michief makers. Not like they doing anything abusive or corrupt. just trouble makers.

Aunt Sarah isn't really a villain, she just assumed Lady was being bad. If her cats had never caused so much mayhem there wouldn't have been any reason to put the muzzle on Lady. Si and Am are for the most part just causing trouble for Lady, sort of like those annoying cousins you hate having to see  As for the rat....I don't remember that part too well so I'll have to get back to you on him.

I really, REALLY didn't like Si & Am, and not in a villianeous kind of way. I'm probably in a very small minority on that one though. The Aunt, on the other hand, was a complete hoot. So realistic. I doubt there's a single person here that doesn't know someone just like that. :P

In my eyes, the rat is not really villainous; he was just acting on his natural animal impulses.

I think it's safe to say that there truly weren't any villians in this movie. There were characters that brought about conflict but none of them were doing something that one would consider villainous.

Well, then, it's not the first time that a Disney film has been without a true villain; another film without a true villain before LATT was Dumbo.

Well, in my opinion the elephants acted as villaneous as one can be. Do you have to threat someone's life to be evil?

Well, not exactly. But you do have to be a bit abusive. The elephants were not abusive, they just shunned Dumbo. And when the ringmaster had Mrs. Jumbo locked up, I don't think he was evil, he just had a business to run. I'm pretty sure lots of circuses did that in reality should something get out of hand.

So it's not abusive to rebaptize him Dumbo instead of Jumbo?

Verbal abuse is just as effective as physical abuse! Jeeeeesh. Dumbo did NOT deserve what he got because of his appearance. That was totally unacceptbale and wrong!

I didn't really see any of them as villains.

No, it's just an insult and an attempt at hurting feelings.

Anyway, aren't we getting a bit off-topic? This thread is about LATT's villains (or its lack thereof), not Dumbo's villains (or its lack thereof).

I've had this conversation with Disney fans, employees and others- What is a villain?

The definitive answer has seem to be- any character that impedes the progress of the protagonist. In English: the one that gets in the way of the good guy's happiness.

With this definition, Si, Am and Sarah all fill roles as Villain.

I never saw Aunt Sarah as a villain, just as kind of oblivious. I mean, she does send them dog biscuits at the end, so I always figured she sort of redeemed herself after she realized that Tramp saved the baby.

Likewise, Si and Am are just sort of jerks. They enjoy making trouble for the fun of it, and while that's not like heroic, it's not on par with like Cruella DeVil or Maleficent.

Disney-Fan, I agree with you on Si and Am. I don't like them, either. I just like their song because I think it's funny. I personally found the rat (aka Big Red to me and a friend of mine :P) to be terrifying! When I was young he scared me, and even now when I watch it, he's one big, scary rat. I would not want that ANYWHERE near my house.

As for Dumbo, I can't really say. That's one movie I really need to watch. But, it sounds like the other elephants were villianous, kind of. I can't really say much until I see the movie, which may be a while because I don't own it.
