Favorite Disney Princess Songs

Post by pap64 »

First of all, forgive me if there is already a topic like this.

Anyways, one of the most memorable qualities of the Disney Princesses is their beautiful singing voices. Thanks to this they have sung some beautiful anthems of hopes, dreams and imagination. It would be hard to imagine them without their theme songs behind them.

Here is my list of favorite Disney Princess songs, starting with my all time favorite song and ending with m not so favorite one.

NOTE: This is all based on PERSONAL PREFERENCE. I am not counting the history behind the song, who sung it, how it was written and such. I am simply stating which songs I like. Music is a lot like pizza toppings; there are many of them out there and people have varied opinions on them. So what may be my least favorite could be very significant to another person, so there's no need to shove it down each other's throats.

1. A Whole New World
Sung by: Jasmine and Aladdin
Disney film: Aladdin

Why I like it: Its perhaps one of the greatest anthems ever written for a Disney film. Everything from the lyrics to the actual music is uplifting and inspiring. Whenever I am writing stories or novel I have this playing in the background. It just fills me with a lot of imagination and hope for the world. You would have to be extremely bitter, cynical or have an extreme hate towards Disney in order for you to hate this song.

2. Part of your world
Sung by: Ariel
Disney film: The Little Mermaid

Why I like it: While I admit I confessed in another thread that the romantic context of the movie is that of a school girl crush its hard to deny that this song is beautiful and actually represents the ideals of the original Andersen story. I've always loved the reprise version of it, especially with the exhilarating ending. Perhaps the best "I want song" ever.

3. Once upon a dream
Sung by: Aurora and Prince Phillip
Disney film: Sleeping Beauty

Why I like it: When I was a kid, I always loved listening to this song. The lyrics are somewhat direct, but its the overall composition that always captivated me. Imagine my surprise when I saw an old Tom and Jerry cartoon that featured "Once upon a dream" as Jerry was skating around a frozen Tom! I then learned the film's score was taken from the old Sleeping Beauty ballet. It was then that I was able to see the beauty in the song. I mean, the lyrics fit the song so well!

4. Reflection
Sung by: Mulan
Disney film: Mulan

Why I like it: Like "Part of your world" before it, Reflection paints a wonderful picture of its heroine in a subtle yet emotionally grand manner. It isn't as memorable (in my opinion) as the other songs, but it still grabs my attention whenever I hear it.

5. Beauty and the Beast
Sung by: Mrs. Potts
Disney Film: Beauty and the Beast

Why I like it: The only song so far that isn't sung directly by the main characters, Beauty and the Beast doesn't stand out as a highly memorable song in my book. BUT it does engrave deep in your mind the image of Belle and the Beast dancing through a golden ballroom as the camera swoops around, capturing the love in their hearts. In short, good song, FANTASTIC scene.

6. Colors of the wind
Sung by: Pocahontas
Disney film: Pocahontas

Why I like it somewhat: Well, the song does present us with a powerful message about life and I know it has its share of fans. But to me at least it doesn't capture my imagination as well as the other songs did. But even then, its a very touching song and like I said, I'm sure many love it and with good reason.

7. So this is love
Sung by: Cinderella and Prince Charming
Disney film: Cinderella

Why I like it somewhat: This is a very simple song. Too simple if you ask me. It does feature some wonderful visuals, but the overall score and lyrics is somewhat forgettable. The interpretation, however, is very good. Very warm and romantic.

8. A dream is a wish your heart makes
Sung by: Cinderella
Disney film: Cinderella

Why I like it somewhat: I will probably get a lot of flames for this, so I better make this clear; I LOVE the message behind it. It musically portrays the ideals in which the whole Disney film industry was built upon. I simply didn't like how it was scored and arranged. Like "This is love" its a very simple song. I honestly like the reprise version better since it gives it the kick it needs.

9. Something there
Sung by: Belle
Disney film: Beauty and the Beast

Why I like it somewhat: The song is good. I just plain never liked it that much. I much prefer the theme song. It does do a good job of presenting us the growing love between Belle and the Beast, but whenever this scene came up I would fast forward it.

10. Someday my prince will come
Sung by: Snow White
Disney film: Snow White and the seven dwarfs

Why it isn't one of my favorites: OK, it is one of the first princess anthems. But I simply didn't enjoy it that much. Like "Something there" I would always skip this scene whenever it came on. Plus, I never liked Snow White's highly squeaky voice, especially when compared to the beautiful vocal ranges of Cinderella, Belle, Jasmine and Ariel. And like "A dream...", the ending reprise version is much better.

I actually have always loved the song "Belle," because it always reminds me of when I watched it when I was younger and thought YES!, finally a Disney heroine I can relate to, who loves books and learning and being smart.

Second place in my heart goes to Part of Your World, and third place probably to Beauty and the Beast.

Whistle While You Work
A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes
Once Upon A Dream
Part Of Your World
Belle
Something There
Beauty and the Beast
A Whole New World
Colours of the Wind
Reflection

Probably some of my favourite songs, fullstop.

I have an absolutely wonderful version of Beauty and the Beast sung by Paige O'Hara - one of my favourite tracks of all time.

I also love If You Can Dream from the Princess Stories DVD's.

I always associate Dancin' A Catchy Rhythm from Disneyland Paris with the Princesses too, as this was used on the Wonderful World of Disney / Princess Parade.

1. "Sing Sweet Nightingale" by Ilene Woods ~ Cinderella
This one often unfairly gets pushed over for the sugar-coated "A Dream Is A Wish."

2. "Just Around the Riverbend" by Judy Kuhn ~ Pocahontas
Again, this song often gets overlooked because of the title song "Colors of the Wind." Did I mention I love Judy Kuhn's voice?

3. "I Won’t Say (I’m In Love)" by Susan Egan ~ Hercules
If I didn't love Meg and the Muses and, well, everything about Hercules, I suppose I might hate this song.

4. "Part of That World" by Jodi Benson ~ The Little Mermaid
It's just a beautiful song that expresses the mermaid's personality, hopes and dreams. The ending's almost depressing, because, at the time, Ariel thinks she'll never have the chance to "explore that world up above."

5. "Belle (Reprise)" by Paige O'Hara ~ Beauty and the Beast
There's something extremely powerful about the song as the camera zooms above the trees.

6. "Reflection" by Lea Salonga ~ Mulan
Though the beginning lyrics start out a little rough, the ending makes up for it. The imagery combined with the song is very powerful.

7. "Part of That World (Reprise)" by Jodi Benson ~ The Little Mermaid
Again, the ending is really the best part. There's a stunning beauty about Benson's voice (which is taken note of in the story) and the human emotion she expresses makes this hard not to like.

8. "Stories" by Paige O'Hara ~ The Enchanted Christmas
A shining moment in a low-effort movie.

9. "I'm Wishing" by Adriana Caselotti ~ Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Although I enjoy Caselotti's voice (though it really isn't her, considering Disney sped it up for the right sound), I'm not crazy about any of the title songs featured in the movie.

10. "Where Do I Go From Here" by Judy Kuhn ~ Journey to a New World
Again, Judy Kuhn. This is really the only other song that's a princess solo that I enjoy hearing.
I have an absolutely wonderful version of Beauty and the Beast sung by Paige O'Hara - one of my favourite tracks of all time.
I don't know if it's asking too much, but is there anyway you could share that? I've never heard of O'Hara singing that before.

Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ ~ "The Fate of Ophelia"
Taylor Swift ~ "Eldest Daughter"
Taylor Swift ~ "CANCELLED!"

Well, I don´t think you are right with the point about speeding up Adriana Caselotti´s voice in the movie. That would make her a chipmunk

The best princess songs, by far, come from The Black Cauldron and Atlantis: The Lost Empire.

Here's my list (I'm including only songs the princesses sing themselves)

Part of your world (+Reprise) (Although Belle is my favorite princess, this is my favorite song)

Belle (+Reprise)

Once upon a dream

Sing Sweet Nightingale

I won't say (I'm in love)

Colors of the wind (not really a Princess song, since Pocahontas isn't a real princess, but still a great song)

So this is love

Reflection (same as Pocahontas)

A whole new world

Once upon a December (I know this is not Disney, it's from Don Bluth's Anastasia, but it is one of the most amazing songs I've ever heard. Simply gorgeous!)

Dottie, I totally agree. This just came on my iTunes (thanks to shuffle) and I'd not heard it in ages and forgotten how good it really was. i think it's the quality where it actually sounds like a music box song somehow.

Hands down for me is Part of Your World in TLM. It's a song filled with passion, hope and despair. It's really makes you empathize with Ariel.

as if my avatar didn't give it away, Aladdin is probably my favorite disney movie. so, loving 'a whole new world' is part of the territory. i just love both of their voices. the scene is stunning, the words and music are both beautiful...and it just captivates you! it's one of those scenes that i will re-wind and watch over if someone interrupts it. also, this is a song that a singer-friend of mine and i were going to make our own recording of, but never got around to. it's an all around beautiful song, and i was SOOO happy it got number one on pap64's list.

i also love- part of your world, reflection, colors of the wind, and a dream is a wish your heart makes.

and, dottie, i LOVE you. 'once upon a december' is DEFINITELY one of THE most BEAUTIFUL songs ever. i love it. i'm, like, always humming that song. it's so hauntingly beautiful. *shivers*

Colors of the Wind

Why Jeremy88 likes it: While I never paid much attention to Pocahontas before it's definitely one of those films thats slowly became one of my favorites. This song has a really good meaning on how people shouldn't just go around judging everything, and taking the simplest things for granted. It basically shows that people shouldn't look on just one side of an opinion but look at it on the other side of the spectrum.

Strange...I would have thought my favorite "princess" song would have come out of Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast or The Little Mermaid lol.

Of those movies I do like A Whole New World, Belle along with the reprise, and Part of that World.

However I don't think those are as strong as Colors of the Wind. Why? Well A whole New World is great, but it's basically just another love song. While Belle and Part of that World are good songs, they really just develop both Belle's and Ariel's character for the films story.

I like that song that Meg sings when she's in the garden in Hercules. She's not really a princess, though is she?

Not really... It's just staged that way.
