I'm a minority as well. So I didn't find Spider-Man to be terrible because... *SPOILER ALERT* When Harry sacrifices his life to save Peter, and in the end he dies with Peter and MJ on either side of him...that got to me. IMO, not to be a romantic, but I just find that the best way to die...with your closest buddy beside you. And it really got to me as to what I would do if I lost my best friend. Just how my thoughts about life were displayed on screen in front of me made me like the movie so much.MadonnasManOne wrote:It's a summer popcorn flick, and even if it isn't perfect, I found it to be quite entertaining. Granted, I don't follow the comics, so I don't know about the back story, what is supposed to happen, and what isn't. All I can say is, putting this film into context with the others, it works. I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I loved all of the villians, I loved the fact that it didn't bring closure to Peter and M.J's relationship, and I loved the action sequences. I was very pleased with it. I guess I'm in the minority here at UD. That's okay. I've never been afraid of being in the minority!

Okay, so this was a problem, then. I couldn't figure out if it was actually the camera work or the fact that I was in the front row and at a bad angle.Disneykid wrote:Oh, and another gripe I have with the film (yes, I think the movie is very flawed despite the fact that I love it) is the camera work in the action sequences.

I thought it was okay. It was, as others have said, a fun summer popcorn type flick, but it wasn't really a great movie, if that makes sense. I thought that the other two were both of those things.
The visual effects were really well done I thought, but it was a little too long for me, and I feel like it tried to cram in too many characters, and too much plot when if they'd slimmed it down a little (maybe only had Venom instead of Venom and Sandman) it would have felt tighter and better paced. There were also some plot holes that kind of bugged me, and I feel like Kirsten Dunst wasn't as good in her role as she has been. James Franco is such a cutie, though.

I agree. The first fight in particular with New Goblin I had no clue what I was even looking at half the time, let alone who was winning.AwallaceUNC wrote:Okay, so this was a problem, then. I thought that the whole jazz club scene was a rip off of Jerry Lewis's The Nutty Professor. It was like Peter Parker became Buddy Love when he wore that black suit.goofystitch wrote:I was less than impressed with "Spiderman 3." I really liked it up to the scene in the Jazz club. Was it just me, or was it taken directly from Jim Carrey in "The Mask"? After that, the whole thing began to fall apart. I can't really talk about it in detail without spoilers, so highlight below if you want to read more.
I thought that the movie was okay, but as others have said I could have done without the jazz club scene and some of the really goofy bits.

Hey, long time no talk, anyway...........
Saw it Friday 5-4. Was looking way forward to it, wore my spidey shirt. three words; It sucked. Period. I was unbelieveably disappointed, the whole movie was laughable, and they introduced the best part of the movie (Venom) 30 minutes before the end. Idiots! They should have concentrated more on Venom than Sandman, Sandman sucks anyway. And what was the point of Bryce Dallas Howard's character? Did she honestly do anything? And then she disappears mid-movie. I was expecting her character to be huge, and if comic book fans are reading, I expected something huge regarding her life to happen. Hugely disappointed! Who wants to see spiderman be all emo? Honestly?!
Then....sadly....I saw it again....Monday night I went with the fam. This time...... i fell asleep. And it was suddenly much better. No, honestly. Without the 1 1/2 hours in the middle (which I slept through) with Emo Spiderman, the movie was amazing. If they would have cut that hour or so out, I would have been ecstatic.
Im just greatly disappointed! Is Marvel incapable of producing a good movie in recent years? Look at X3, I freakin' hated that movie too! Get Better Writers, end of discussion.

Wow, it absolutely amazes me that some of you are being so harsh on this film.
Honestly, it wasn't bad, at all.
Maybe that's because I liked the emotional aspect of it. The romantic aspect of it. I think that's the same reason I fell in love with Superman Returns, while it seemed others disliked that aspect.
I also found the stuff that many of you are calling "goofy", to be quite funny. I just can't agree with the reviews that this is a bad, or disappointing film. It's not. In my opinion, it makes the other two films seem tame. There's so much more going on in this one, and I found it to be much more enjoyable.

After a few days I still haven't talked to many people that loved Spider-Man 3. One of my friends really liked it, but that was about it. Most say it was either ok, or they were disappointed in it. I'm wondering how it will do the next few weeks in the box office with all the bad reviews and stories. The first two films seem like masterpieces compared to 3 the more I think about it. However I still enjoyed it, but it wasn't on par with the other Spider-Man films.
As a comic fan I'm not disappointed that they changed the storys, etc... I'm just upset that with an almost 300 million dollar budget this was the best they could come up with. It was like Raimi and everyone quit trying. Comparing this to X3, and Superman Returns it beats X3... however I actually found Superman Returns more entertaining.
I liked the addition of Gwen Stacy, even though her character didn't do much. Basically provide tension between MJ and Peter, and Peter and Eddie (sort of).
I've thought about it for awhile, since the movies change things from the comics all the time, how about replace MJ with Gwen? In the comics Gwen dies, and then Peter eventually marries MJ. How about the other way around? You don't even have to kill MJ, just write her out. It would be a change I guess. For the short amount of time Gwen was in this movie I found her far better than MJ. Again blame this on the acting in the 3rd film, who knows...

At the time (when was this? 1982ish?) I thought it was amazing. But in those days we didn't have company wide crossovers every year in comics*. These days, well, Secret Wars doesn't stand up I'm afraid.MickeyMousePal wrote:Hey, 2099net are you a fan of Marvel's Secret Wars?
I thought the series was great but it was too long.
That said, Secret Wars did give us Julia Carpenter as Spider-Woman II. Secret Wars alone was a success because of Spider-Woman II. Forget about the black costume Spider-Man got... it sure looks better on a woman!
* In fact, the only other one I can remember from round about the same time is the Casket of Ancient Winters storyline in Thor which flirted with other titles when the Casket was opened.

OK, so here are some random thoughts in place of a review...
* Wonderful action, wonderful camera work. I actually really enjoyed the steady cam action shots. They really upped the level of excitement, for me anyway.
* So. The black suit. Supposedly evil? Then why is Parker walking around the streets like he's participating in Sesame Street: The Lost Episode? Pretty lame, and far too long a sequence imo.
* All the love triangles? IMO, they surprisingly work, and serve a purpose for the arc of the main characters. Though the bit with Peter and Harry at the restaurant felt kinda forced for some odd reason.
* Where was the butler all these years? Sheesh, if you knew the truth about crazy Norman then why didn't you say something you old goof? Impecable timing!!
* SWEET climax. Felt like it was lifted straight out of some comic book. The Harry / Peter banter was great.
* Venom! How I love thee. Let me count the ways...
* The pacing and story was off mostly and there's no one to blame but Raimi. Venom was forced upon you? SO WHAT! You do the best with what you've got. If that means sacrificing Harry as a villian or Sandman, so be it. Know your audience, and know how to reward them. They're the reason for the franchise's success, so giving back some to 'em wouldn't be such a bad idea. Next time? More Venom, less of the classics. They're repetitive, and frankly, pretty lame. And I know I'm among a pretty huge majority (fanboys aside. Those seem to be split in half).

Spider-man 3 is a good movie. Great start to the summer season. I was a bit concerned when I first heard months ago that there would be 3 different villains, but it was handled nicely. The story was great and, like the first 2 Spidey films, it didn't rush things along just to get to the action sequences. It took it's time and I liked it that way. I still would've trimmed about 20 minutes off it though.
Visual effects were a little too CG heavy for me (at times I felt like I was watching an animated movie), but still overall impressive. Loved James Franco in this, great range of emotions. Get rid of Kristen Dunst and her singing. Tobey was, aside from the "Saturday Night Fever-ish dancing" as mentioned earlier, great too.
Final grade: B

Saw it last night in IMAX, and I can't really put my feelings towards this film into words. Yes I liked it, but it could have been better.
Unlike what others have said I didn't find the action sequences confusing but the film dragged on for to long in parts (I doubt little kids will be that patient during this movie) with talking and crying (did Kleenex tissues sponsor this film?) and just waiting for things to happen. I didn't mind having Harry as a villain because the set up was already done in the first two films but having two other villains made it to much (I'd take Venom over Sandman any day). My two complaints for Venom were 1. No logical reason for Venom falling from the sky like The Blob (in the 90's cartoon a spaceship brought samples from space and it crash landed in NYC) and 2. Spiderman could take the suit off when his is not meant to. The best parts of the film involved J. J. Jamson as he steals the show in every Spiderman film.
A very minor detail:according to imdb.com, In the first film, Mel Brooks sued the director for unwanted advertisement (A bus went by showing an add for The Producers) and in this film we see another theatre showing The Producers, and I kept wondering was the director allowed to do this? Then again you could also clearly see the big Phantom of the Opera logo to.

I agree with you, my boyfriend's recently gotten me into comic books, and I thought something was going to happen with her, there's no point in her being in the movie other wise. I also agree on the point about Venom, he was the main attraction for me, not Mr Sand-in-ya-pants.SofaKing381222 wrote:Hey, long time no talk, anyway...........

I'm sure people will have lots to say about this, from IMDB
I'm biting my tongue, I have so much I want to vent after those woeful, needless Star Wars prequels!'Spider-Man 3' Is "Silly," Says Lucas
George Lucas has joined the major newspaper critics in their negative appraisal of Spider-Man 3. In an interview with FoxNews.com's Roger Friedman, Lucas said, "It's a silly movie. ... There just isn't much there. Once you take it all apart, there's not much story, is there?" Over the weekend, Spider-Man 3 surged ahead of Lucas's Star Wars' episode Revenge of the Sith to take the record for the biggest weekend box-office record. Star Wars was also criticized as being "silly," Lucas noted. "But it wasn't." He also disclosed that he is working on at least two other Star Wars movies for television. "But they won't have members of the Skywalker family as characters. They will be other people of that milieu."
