General DVD Site

Post by Disneykid »

I'm surprised no one's made a thread on this, yet. I wasn't sure whether to put this in Feedback or Off-Topic, though it'd probably get more exposure in the latter.

What does everyone think of UltimateDisney branching out to a non-Disney DVD site? I find the idea to be an excellent one. It'll be great to know what the regular reviewers think of certain non-Disney films. Does this mean the site will be receiving review copies from other studios, now? Also, will the site review older titles from other studios? I'd love to see this site review DVDs from AFI's top 100 list as well as Best Picture Oscar winners. I'd be willing to review some of those if it's decided to visit catalogue titles as well as new releases (and I finally have screencapping capabilities). I wonder what else the branching site will consist of. It'd be rather insane to do page listings for other studios unless you did it by collection (like Fox's Studio Classics or WB's Special/Collector's/Ultimate Editions).

I was going to make a thread about this this morning, but I didn't. So, I'm glad you did, Disneykid!

Will there be one umbrella site (something like ultimatedvds.com), and if we type in ultimatedisney.com, we'll come to this site that we all know and love? I'm hoping they won't be all combined into one website, since I'm not interested in other studios' films...

Big thumbs up from me. As long as it is comprehensive then less sites to visit - digitalbits and tvshowsondvd wont need visiting.

Good luck Luke.

This seems like a good move, and a very interesting one at that. I'll have to see how it pans out if I'm going to drop my daily visits to davisdvd, digitalbits, and dvdactive.

This is a great idea! Now I can get a good quality and in-depth review on non-Disney DVDs! This is going to be great!

Nothing's really set in stone just yet, and I probably jumped the gun a bit when I replied to James in the review feedback thread.

<snip snip snip>

Still, I'm excited for this expansion, but beyond what I've said in this post, I'm in the same boat as everyone else and really don't know much about how exactly the non-Disney site will work.

A big thumbs up from me as well. The Digital Bits used to be my favorite DVD site for reviews, but they don't do them like they used to, and what they do review now is mostly HD and Blu-Ray. So, I'm looking forward to having another site to go to for non-Disney DVD reviews. Good luck, Luke! :thumb:

I will only support this venture as long as the new site will have nothing whatsoever to do with the features from Crapworks animation SKG. Particularly Drek!

Otherwise I shall cry out boycot!!

What if the site reviewed their DVDs, but each review ripped the film in question to shreds? ;)

So who exactly will be doing the reviews? Is this open to members? I have a lot of DVDs on my end I could possibly review if needed.

Will Disney DVDs get priority over non-Disney DVDs when it comes review time?

Just curious..... :)

I was reluctant of this news at first, but with the excellent NATM review, I really think this is a great idea and would like to see more in-depth reviews of several non-Disney titles. Something like NATM is not going to get many in-depth reviews or (sadly) possitive reviews, so it was great to see a review that was both. I certainly would like to see more of such!

However, I'm not sure we need to review say big box office grossing franchises or Best Picture winners as they have pretty good coverage outside of UD.

I wish that there was a separate website name for the non-Disney films...it doesn't feel right having a picture of "Night at the Museum" on the Ultimate DISNEY webpage... :(

I agree.
Anyway, I thought this idea was shot down some time ago?

With Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney in the cast list, it might as well be a Disney movie. Besides, the cohabitation of Disney and non-Disney is only temporary until the new site can launch. There has to be content for a new site and an audience would help too, so this is just a growing period. Luke's definitely aware of the spirit and meaning of UD and isn't planning to dilute or obstruct that.

I think it's a great idea. There's room to have Disney and non-Disney DVDs blend together nicely on this site.

I think its great that we are finally getting general dvd reviews. I liked the Night at the Museum review. It was really well done.

No, sorry guys, I don´t like this idea at all!
This is a site for the Disney DVDs and not other studios releases - we can read that on other forums or sites.
Sorry to sound negative like this, but I think this will be confusing if it´s not kept more separate from this specific site than it is today.
I understod it that that was to be the case, but until now the reviews shows up on this site and that is not good, according to me!!

Again, that is only temporary.
