Selective Service System. This applies to all US Males 18-25

Post by jeremy88 »

Okay so yesterday was just another dandy Monday afternoon when I came home from school and my mom is all like "Oh look Jeremy you got a letter from the Government." Im like..."What the?"

Anyways so I open this "Selective Service" letter thinking it's just another letter trying to recruit me into the miliatry. Well as I'm reading Im getting rather angry. It basically said "If I don't join the Selective Service System, it's a federal crime and I could be imprisoned and pay a large fine." I read that and I was like "WHAT THE BLEEP BLEEP BLEEP IS THIS BLEEP BLEEP OF A MOTHA BLEEP!" (oh and I didnt say that in front of my mother...she'd rip my tounge out) Yeah I was pretty pissed. I honestly have no problem fighting for my country and I was actually was thinking about joining the National Guard or Navy or something, and I guess the purpose of this is to just have men ready to be drafted if they need them. But what annoys me is that Im "required" to join and if I don't I could go to jail and pay a crap load of money, it makes no sense to me and it seems like I've lost my rights as an American Citizen. If I wanna go out there and join the military then I will but Im not gunna wanna do it because I have no choice. I most likely will join because I don't feel like being imprisoned for absolutely no reason and Im hoping it's not big deal, just the subject matter of it bothers me to the core.

But anyway have any of you guys got this letter? Or is it just me and some other "select" males. If there is anybody here already registered then please let me know and tell me what this this is all about.

Here's the website to this thing http://www.sss.gov

Sheesh I barely turned 18 five months ago and already the Goverments on my back.

How in the world is this a "perk"? I'm only 15, and I don't want to do anything with this. You know, if Mr. Bush hadn't gotten the US in the war, they wouldn't need any men to serve the country! That goes for every single war. If everyone just sat down and talked to each other and sorted out the problems, the world would be a much more peaceful place. Well, the only ways that I know how to get out of being drafted are: 1) A college student. The government can't take you out if you are studying 2) Marry with children. The goverment can't take you away from your children. Seriously, I'm sure that there are pleanty of people, who, without having to sign up, would go for the military, or navy, or air force, or whatever. I say that the government should just leave everyone alone. If the government wants people to go and fight and kill themselves, why don't they go? They probably started the conflict!

Does this only apply to males, or should I expect it next year?

Oh, good grief. I see this thread moving to a bad place very quickly.

Could we please stop with the Bush bashing? Everything was fine until the whole Bush Administration thing was brought up. We all have our opinions and they aren't going to change. So in other words, I'd like to stop the arguing before it starts.

But to answer your question, Jeremy, I'm not 18 yet, but I've also heard that everyone gets that letter when they turn 18. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. I don't see the draft being reinstated for a very long time considering there are still many people who are willingly joining the army.

Nothing to worry about, unless they reinstate the draft. I got this letter back when I turned 18. It made me a little uneasy. However, it's just part of being male in America. By the way, as much as I don't like Bush, he has nothing to do with this. This has been going on forever. I turned 18 back in 1993, and was never called to duty. Just get your card, and go on with life.

Actually I think they can still draft you even if your in college now. I heard once that they let you finish your current semester, or something like that. I might be wrong though. I know there is a government website with all the rules if you want to check them out.

Anyway I got this letter when I was 18 as well. I still have my card, not sure how long you need to keep that. I'll be 27 next month. I remember when I got it not wanting to sign up for it. I wasn't mad about it though. The only thing I remember is my Dad telling me to make sure I signed it and mailed it back.

Do Not lose the card! It is proof that you signed up, plus it has valuable info. I missplaced mine too somwhere in my room. Find your cards people and put them away in a safe place.

What if I accidentally burnt mine? Is that bad? Am I going to jail? I'm pretty sure they'll give you a replacement or something if you lose it.

Why would you burn it? You should keep it anyway, just in case you never know. Doesn't it have your social on it?

Sorry you said accidently, accidents happen I'm sure they'll understand.
