are these titles collectable?

Post by mfleet »

i have just started collecting disney dvds for my unborn son. ive started with the p.e. stuff then moved toward pixar. my goal is all of disneys animated theatrical titles. (exp.) snow white - meet the robinsons. i dont make the kind of money that allows me to run out and buy up every peace of property disney puts on the shelf. my question for you knowlegable folks is. in your opions do you think titles like robin hood wost wanted edition, and dumbo big top edition and worth buying now? or would i be better off waiting for a more platinum edition like rerelease.

vary humbled and greatful.

I'd go ahead and buy them. They're likely all we're going to get for those films for the next several years.

Some of these editions will be in the vault for 7 years, so he won't be able to watch any of them until then if you don't get them now... However, some of the older titles (like Snow White,) have already been in the vault for a few years, so there should probably be a re-release by the time he is 3-4... Plus, they are going to be expensive to obtain at the moment, since they are out of print.

I would tell you to go ahead and pick them up as well. Robin Hood is a great film, but will probably never recieve 2 disc treatment, there simply doesn't seem to be enough material to justify one. The Most Wanted Edition may very well be the highest treatment that film will ever see. Sure, it will be released again down the road, but I doubt the bonus features will be extended much, if at all. I am surprised that Dumbo does not have a 2 disc edition yet, but since it does not, that makes me feel that there won't be one for this film either. First we got the 60th Anniversary Edition in 2001 with very limited bonus features one disc, then 5 years later we got The Big Top Edition, another patheticlly empty single disc DVD. With the very successful Platinum Edition line, and even 2-discers outside of the Platinum line (Mulan, Pocahontas, Alice in Wonderland, etc) I would think that if the movie has not yet recieved 2 disc treatment, or doesn't on its next release (Aristocats in the near future, I can't imagine Hercules and Hunchback wouldn't get 2 disc treatment SOMEDAY), that it probably won't ever get it. So, I would say go ahead and pick up Robin Hood: Most Wanted Edition, DUmbo: Big Top Edition, and while you're at it, make sure you get The Fox and the Hound: 25th Anniversary Edition. :)

I wouldn't buy any of those feature films for a kid who hasn't even been born yet. It will be many years until he's old enough to watch them and by that time there will be new releases available of just about all of them.

Disney animated features aren't really something I would recommend as first movies or DVDs for very young children, anyway. They're much too complex, too long and too scary for that. There's a lot of animated series and other programs out there that are more suitable. My nephew is 2 and a half years old, and he doesn't watch any hand-drawn animated films yet. He prefers, for example, tv shows with puppets or some kind of three dimensional characters in them, and short, simple episodes.

well yeah but my daughter is 3 and she loves i mean loves the lion king so maybe you just havent given him a chance to watch the 2-d movies then she also really likes all the pixar movies, finding nemo and cars are her 2 favs. so i think at about 3 years old they will start watching them!! she even liked them before her 3rd birthday which was last month. so i would start collecting them now or by the time you child wants to watch them you might not be able to find it like beauty and the beast i had to pay 50 dollars for and lion king i had to pay 35 dollars so its best to get them now!!

Since I don't have a lot of money, my way of finishing my collection on DVD is very much different from some others. I buy all the 2-disk classics, and all the DVDs of the films I don't have on VHS. When it comes to Robin Hood or Dumbo, I'm not buying them. I have too many other movies I want to get, and we all know that Robin Hood, Dumbo, and Fox and the Hound will get multiple releases in the future, possibly on a new system (Blue ray). I really don't see the point in buying a movie 3 or 4 times, every time a new system comes out, and I am waiting.

Of course, this would all be different if I had more money, but that's not the case.
Best Movies of 2009:
1. Moon
2. Inglorious Basterds
3. The Hurt Locker
4. Coraline
5. Ponyo

You may have particular reasons to want to buy certain titles right now - then "just do it". But in general I think it's quite safe to say that most or all of them will be available again - constantly, or in just a few years...
