Question about changed animation on DVD
When you insert your "Saludos Amigos" or "Melody Time" DVDs, there's a green box that says that the film has been modified, right? Why isn't there a box like that in front of "The Little Mermaid", "Beauty and the Beast", "Aladdin", "The Lion King", or any other movie that had some animation changed in it? I'm just starting my TLM DVD, and the thought came to me. You'd think they'd let you know that they changed some animation.

Good question, and I have no idea why they don't have to do that. Since The Lion King had the changes in place for the IMAX release, I guess it is still considered a theatrical version. They should definitely have to put a message in front of TLM and Aladdin, though. Or better yet, just stop editing the movies, Disney!

wait what was changed in the little mermaid? If the only thing I can think of is the knee I think Disney is trying to avoid the face that it's been changed, and it's not really a "new animation" more or less of a quiet edit.
TLK - yuck changes the morning report really sticks out like a sore thumb, awful...
..what was changed in aladdin?

I was thinking of the knee, but I'm obsessive like that. I wouldn't mind The Morning Report if Simba's voice sounded like Simba's voice- seriously, could they not find ANYONE who sounded like Jason Weaver? I'm sure he has cousins or something...CampbellzSoup wrote:wait what was changed in the little mermaid? In "Aladdin", I want to say that stars were changed and more details were put in (it was supposed to be shown in IMAX theaters), and didn't they change Aladdin's line on the balcony?
Taking out Pecos Bill's or Goofy's cigarettes didn't alter the context of the movie, and yet it still shows it. I think that Disney should tell us that these aren't exactly the original theatrical versions. carter1971, that's a good point, but they're not the original versions they claim to be.

I agree. Even though the changes in TLM and Aladdin were minor, I'm a cinema purist and would prefer that they leave them alone. They totally went George Lucas on us in TLK, though, and I don't see why. The added songs aren't a big issue with me, since you have the option to view the movie without them on DVD.
I suppose Disney could defend editing these films by saying that, as George Lucas has said, they own them and the creators are still here to approve of the changes. In my opinion, they should still have to display the warning box before the films if they choose to edit them from the originals. (Oh, and for those of you who aren't Star Wars fans, those films don't have a warning before them on DVD, either.)
That arguement is all well and good for Disney when it comes to recent films, but it really angers me that they chose to edit three of Walt Disney's films, since he is not with us to approve the changes.

What angers me is that, while you can still view the "original theatrical" version, you still have the changed crocodiles and the altered waterfall... why they changed the crocodiles I will never kno (and I have to turn my head whenever that scene comes on because the change is such a shock to me).carter1971 wrote:Yes, go into Set Up, and choose a sound option from the Original Theatrical list. They reanimated the crocodiles because they looked very similar to those in some paintings by an artist. I posted about this on another forum, and, once I find my post there, I'll elaborate.
edit: here's the link to where I posted on the other site (my apologies for posting a link to another forum, but it answers the question):

Hmm...that's weird- I'm on the school computer, and I'm not logged in to the other site, and it worked...
"I found this explanation on http://www.bigmoviezone.com/filmsear...rod_notes.html
Allers also got a chance to fix another source of irritation in the "Just Can't Wait to be King" musical sequence. "The singing crocodiles in this sequence never looked right. It's a very short scene but they were never properly designed. For the Large Format version, we were able to redesign the crocodiles and the birds in their mouths and re-do the animation. The color palette was also changed. Now this scene is much more integrated."

Anyone remember an artist named Michael Bedard? I first noticed his stuff when he was doing a strip for the L.A.. FREE PRESS. He went away, but came back with a series of terrific art prints featuring cartoony, white ducks. These were quite popular during the 1980s. One of these images (the one in our home) was/is a duck sunning himself at poolside, surrounded by hungry crocs. The crocs in that LION KING scene are nearly identical to the crocs in that Bedard art.
Something tells me that legal action was taken to insure that the Disney crocs were changed so they would no longer resemble Michael Bedard's crocodiles.
I'll attach the picture of Mr. Bedard's work.
Pics are from http://www.ultimatedisney.com/thelionking2.html
Pictures 1 and 2 show the crocodiles from the original version, and the last 2 pictures are from the Platinum Edition DVD."
Obviously, I didn't copy/paste the pictures, but the crocs are from the TLK UD page, and here's a link to a picture of one of Michael Bedard's paintings:

I can confidently say that if Mr. Bedard would want to sue Disney, he still can, because the supposedly "redesigned" crocodiles still look very much like those in Mr. Bedard's painting. So Disney, you still have no valid explanation for changing the crocodiles in The Lion King.

I founded that crocodile change to be pathetic as well. When I was little and saw the Lion King, I love those crocodile even though short lived appearance. I saw them in the trailer and like the design.
As for Morning Report, I would much prefer them to do Endless Night or Shadowland. That would really make it a bit hit. Especially Endless Night.

The green "warning box" actually refers to full-screen home video/dvd releases. That is why it says "it has been formatted to fit your screen." That's all it means, is that you miss some of what was on the edges.
When they take minor stuff out of films, like The Lion King or The Little Mermaid, this is technically part of the restoration process, something that the buyer is already aware of.
And as for the line in Aladdin, the line wasn't removed, just clarified. It was never what the rumour suggested, but -- as I'm sure we all know -- people are so quick to assume that Disney's done something wrong. They were never subliminal messages, but due to the assumption that they were, they re-tooled the DVD releases to prevent further controversy.

Well, in Pecos Bill's story, they had to cut out a whole line of his theme song when cutting out his cigarette. Part of the song says, "Pecos rolled a smoke and lit it." It leaves that great song in really poor shape. I sooo hope these two films get unedited rereleases someday, along with "Make Mine Music," which needs the hillbilly feud story restored to it. That was the worst of all the cuts!blackcauldron85 wrote: Taking out Pecos Bill's or Goofy's cigarettes didn't alter the context of the movie, and yet it still shows it. I'm nervous to type this, in case anyone at Disney reads this while working on the "101 Dalmatians" PE, but Cruella smokes, and her cigarette remains intact. Don't you dare touch that movie, Disney!slave2moonlight wrote: Well, in Pecos Bill's story, they had to cut out a whole line of his theme song when cutting out his cigarette. And, something I've been wondering about lately...
In "Pinocchio", the word "jackass" is said a few times. Disney wouldn't censor that for the PE, would they? I don't think they would, but you never can tell with them. I'm nervous about them messing with any other movies.
