Alice in Wonderland dvd review

Post by jasmine-rules »

I found this review on ign.com. Seems like they did a good job with this one. They say that the restoration is similar to that done with sleeping beauty so it is worth the upgrade if you already have the GC edition. Take a look :)

I am glad to see that they are giving this movie the proper respect it deserves.

Whoo-hoo! Still disappointed about no Treasures for Christmas but getting a restored Alice, plus Alice's Wonderland, PLUS all the promotional material... this is AWESOME and I am elated that I can soon have this in my hands.

WOW! Awesome!! I'm only afraid about the spanish track. I hope this movie wasn't been re-dubbed, as they did with Sleeping Beauty, Lady and the Tramp and Melody Time. :(

Judging from that above IGN article, I can certainly say I'm glad I reconsidered my "no rebuys" policy (just this once :wink:).

I do have a previous release, but the "One Hour in Wonderland" and "Fred Warring" - even if they are of poor video quality - sound like they are worth the price of the disc alone.

And the rest of the disc certainly looks better than it ever has before. Who am I to argue with Disney's first Masterpiece Edition? :)

I did find this really funny though:
IGN wrote:That's not to say it isn't clean and easy to understand. It's very easy, even with some of the heavier British accents used.
How often do your hear any review saying how heavy some American accents are (and they are, you know, to some of us non-Americans)? :P
I find most thick English accents easier to understand than some US ones actually.... :wink:

Also, I wanted to send props out to Ernest Rister for the excellent history...

Now, you all know how I feel about the British accent for Alice (see my DIScussions essay but basically I think it's a faux accent exaggerated because it's what American's expect the British to sound like) but I would love to see an Alice in Wonderland with some heavier British accents. Can you imagine a Geordie Alice, or a Brummie Alice or even a Liverpudlian Alice? Now that would be money well spent.

I'm happy the original mono soundtack is included. I believe the LD had a music and sound effects track (rather like the backing on the Sleeping Beauty commentary soundtrack). It's a shame this wasn't included.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

Like I've sayd (many) times, I'm happy with what Disney put on this, but there's still stuff missing from the Laserdisc that easily could've been ported over. The laserdisc had (features marked with asterisks at the end didn't make it to DVD):

* Music and Effects-Only Track ***
* "One Hour in Wonderland" TV Special
* "Operation Wonderland" Promotional Featurette
* Excerpt from "The Fred Waring Show"
* "Alice's Wonderland" 1923 Silent Film
* "Thru the Mirror" Mickey Mouse Short
* Storyboard Gallery ***
* Concept Art Gallery
* Script Outlines from 1939 and 1943 ***
* Abandoned Sequences Including Alternate Opening
* Walt Disney Tv Intros from 1954 and 1964
* Original 1951 Theatrical Trailer and 1974 Re-Issue Trailer
* Radio Dramatization starring Kathryn Beaumont ***
* Promotional Radio Show ***
* Deleted Numbers

The music-only track was, from the start, very obviously never going to make it to DVD since Disney doesn't do those, but the story outlines, storyboard gallery, and radio shows could've have made it on Disc Two without sacrificing much space. Even the concept art gallery and deleted numbers are not in their full form on DVD from what I've heard. The LD had something like 20 unused songs; the DVD gives us 6, 7 if you include the newly discovered "I'm Odd" which wasn't on the LD. Ah, well. I'm glad we're getting this edition, period (and with un-edited One Hour in Wonderland and trailers to boot).

I found it to be a lil more...I dunno, odd compared to El Mariachi and Desperado. It definitely has its moments and good ol Johnny Depp does well in it, of course!

Open Range is excellent. One of the best movies of last year, in my opinion, and the best western since "Unforgiven". Can't wait to buy it.

The only film I can think off that he couldn't save was The Ninth Gate. It was slow with a terrible ending. Blah! Everything else was pretty good.
