The Should I Buy [Insert Title] Dvd Thread

How could we tell? After all, it depends first and foremost on your "outlook on Disney", in my opinion. I'd practically never seen any of the material myself - in part since I'm too young and from the wrong part of the world... But I've got them all and appreciate them. So I could easily "recommend them for myself", which isn't all that useful - I don't know about you. Are you able to "appreciate nostalgia for the sort of childhood you probably never had"...?

I can see why you'd think of them as "lesser Treasures" if your Disney bent is towards animation, as I was frankly getting them for the sake of completion to start with. However, some of my favourite moments of classic Disney have been found on these sets - Davy Crockett most prominently, but Spin & Marty and Elfego Baca both have a nostalgic charm of their own.

If you can track down Davy Crockett, I'd highly recommend it for all-round fun, but alternatively there are the feature-length "King of the Wild Frontier" and "River Pirates" DVDs available that have strung together the individual episodes for when they enjoyed their theatrical run. Davy Crockett is pure Disney, and is every bit as magical as the other live-action films and TV shows at the time. Dig that theme tune!

Some of the vintage documentaries are also fun, but are an acquired taste I guess. There is something worthwhile on all of the sets, but again - not all of them are going to be as fun for modern audiences as they were back in the day. The animation has more of a universal appeal.

I personally would just because I plan to get the last 3 I need to complete the collection. Also I like that they are from that time period, (50's and around Disneyland time). I have yet to watch my live action ones like MMC and Spin and Marty, but I think I will enjoy the nostalgia aspect(even though I was born in 1984).

Lol, you just listed all the Treasures I don't own. Though really, as others have said, it comes down to a personal choice. For me, I had no interest in any of these at all, and I felt most of them didn't belong in the Treasures line in the first place. I can forgive Davy Crockett (at least it contained the entire series in one go) despite the fact I wasn't personally interested, but I felt the others would've been better left to other lines. If it were for their taking up space in the line throught the past couple years, we'd have all of the Donald shorts by now; instead of not being sure if we'll ever get the last Donald Treasures.

I have almost all the animated features (including sequels) (except for movies such as "Doug's 1st Movie", "Gargoyles: The Heroes Awaken", "The Mighty Ducks: The First Face-Off", etc). The animated movies are my favorite part about Disney. I also collect the short compilation DVDs (Disney Cartoon Classics and Funny Factory). I have 4 of the Treasures (Behind the Scenes, Front Lines, and the 2 Mickey Mouse in Black & Whites). A few months ago, after I joined the Disney Movie Club, I decided to start collecting more live-action features (I have all the animated/live action movies, but only a few live-action). I bought a few live-action movies. I ended up selling them (some I wish I didn't sell and I will buy back, such as "Babes in Toyland" and "The Parent Trap"). Movies such as "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and "Treasure Island", for example, I know aren't my cup of tea. I'd like to see them eventually, but renting them from the library will be good enough for me. If I love them, I can buy them again. I thought that I should have all the Disney movies available. But, I read a post on here from a member (I don't know who it was), and that person said why bother buying the movies that you don't really want- you should buy the movies that you like. Which makes sense.

So, to make a long story shorter, if you're unsure whether or not you'd like the shows on these particular Treasures, try to rent them from the library (they may have the 2 separate Davy Crockett movies at least). If you can get the Treasures cheap, that's one thing, but before shelling out big bucks for these, do some research, go on YouTube...just see if it's something you'd be interested in before paying a lot of money.

Same here. I only have a few of the live action Disney films, and I'm not really interested in the live action TV series. I do have The Mickey Mouse Club, though. But I didn't want to buy them just because they're a part of a specific series since I probably wouldn't buy them if they weren't.

I don't think so. The concept for the treasures seems to have been to release two cartoon compilations and one or two sets of something else each year. Why they left Donald so late in the series, I have no idea.

That's even an understatement... Since there are SO many movies and other programs available (at least when including non-Disney material...) one certainly shouldn't waste money and space on what one is not interested in. Sometimes one discovers new (or, in this case, old) material, though - that's a different thing, I guess.

So, I was thinking about the Collector Editions that Disney released in the past (The Emperor's New Groove, Tarzan, Bugs Life, Fantasia, etc.) I have many of the CE's with the exceptions of Tarzan, Bugs' Life (I like Pixar, but not sure if I want to get the BL DVD), and Atlantis. Anyway, I decided to look up the Atlantis CE on Best Buy's website to see if my store had any, expecting them not to. But, low-and-behold, my store has at least one copy of the CE of Atlantis. (at $35, but I'm looking to see if I can find a store that has it at $30 so I can price match )

Now, here's the thing: I have never seen Atlantis. I have seen bits and parts: I remember something about crystals and the girl with whitish hair! but that's it. But I'm really considering buying it because A. I can get the 2-Disk version now; I wouldn't have to do searching for it. B. Its getting harder to find (supposedly). But I've only bought one DVD on the tip of the hat without ever seeing it (well, not recently), but that was Bambi. I expected it to be fairly good. But I know Atlantis flopped in the Box Office, and supposedly wasn't as good as previous films put out by Disney. So, as you can imagine I'm a little apprehensious about getting this DVD without seeing it. So, I thought I should ask all of you at UD what you think I should do. Buy? Don't Buy? Don't care?

I love-love-love that movie. Loved it from the start! I know not everybody is like me, so I'll add that the DVD is great, full of input and fascinating material.

The Collector's Edition DVD is great. It may be of more interest to you if you like the movie, but as DVDs go, it's really quite good.

Yes! It's such a great movie, and it's chock-full of bonus features! It's definitely worth it!

Buy it. Even if you don't like the movie, the bonus features are worth it. I do recommend watching the movie multiple times - even if you don't like it. I hated it after my first viewing, but it's grown on me.

Pick up A Bug's Life whenever you can. I've often seen it between $13.72 and $9.44 at Wal-Mart, and that's definitely a good deal.

Cruise the GameStops and E/B Games and FYE's as well. I found my Atlantis CE for $7.99 at an E/B Games (it had been marked down from $17.99).

It really is a movie you have to view a few times in order to "get", so to speak. I mean, watching it once and thinking, "THIS is Disney?" would steer quite a few people away from it. If you can, rent the single-disc first, from Blockbuster or Netflix, just to see if you actually like it. Also, check out a few of the bonus features on that disc (such as the Visual Commentary). Then, if you like what you're seeing from the bonus features and feel the movie is worth re-visiting, pick up the CE. It's one of THE best from Disney, superior to most of the Platinums, and really opens your eyes to the amount of time and dedication and work that goes into making an animated feature.

Buy? Don't Buy? Don't care?

I'm not recommending an outright blindbuy (or, since you saw bits and pieces of it a "losing-eyesight-buy" ), mainly because while the bonus features ARE worth the price, sometimes bonus features just don't justify having a movie you don't like. I mean, I'm still scratching my head as to why I bothered picking up The Lion King, since I haven't watched it or its bonus materials in the past two years. And that's supposed to be a film that everyone likes, even though the bonus materials are hopelessly arranged in a segmented and repetitive manner.

So, if you're willing to chance it just for the bonus materials, pick it up now. But with Atlantis, I'd definitely recommend a rental first before choosing to get the CE.

Count me in as one who loves the movie. I say buy the Collector's Edition, it's definitely one of the better 2-disc Disney sets out there. As the others have said, the bonus features alone are worth the price of the set.

I say buy it!! $35 sounds like a good deal to me for something that's basically out-of-print. While I liked the movie, a word of caution - it may not be everyone's couple of tea. It's not your "traditional" Disney animated movie. There are no musical numbers, no annoying talking animal sidekicks and has a real mature adult feel. It has great characters and a truly wonderful captivating story.

Yes, as others have said, the movie is enjoyable, and the bonus features are worth if for any Disney fan. I'd pick this one up ASAP if I were you!

The Atlantis CE was actually the last Disney film I bought recently, which was like last Monday. I got mine from a seller on Amazon, and it was still in shrink wrap and all I've only checked out a few of the features on it, but THERE'S A LOT OF IT. The film itself is growing on me. It had been a long time since I've seen it. You should definately get it.
