Mulan. Region 1 different from region 2?

Post by DrkDevil »

"Extras - Being that this was one of the VERY first Disney DVDs ever (this was THE first to be released on DVD instead of being released on laserdisc first), Mulan is incredibly skimpy on extras. We find two music videos: Christina Aguilera's "Reflection" and 98 Degrees' "True to Your Heart." Both songs are very well made (especially "Reflection") and they are much better than some of the pop crap to come from Disney in recent years. We also get the theatrical trailer, which includes rough animation and certain shots that do not appear in the finished film. Sadly, this is pretty much it..."

After reading this review from the site and seeing that it concerns the region 1 DVD, can anyone explain me why the region 2 of Mulan has no extras!! :( ....not even the two music videos, just the movie. I´ve got the Spanish edition wich is the same than the Portuguese (only diference is the cover)...is the region 2 english edition the same, with no extras?

Don't worry, you are not missing very much.
Altough some of the "Limited Issue" editions released in the USA have some extras (like Hercules, Pinocchio, Mulan and Dalmatians), most of the internetional releases (maybe all of the internetional releases) don't have any extras.
And I think you're luck for having the region 2 DVD of "Mulan" - I've read it is anamorphic widescreen, isn't it? Well, the American edition is just letterbox widescreen (and the terrible Brazilian edition is pan-&-scan only!! )

Olá! Legal ver que alguém fala português por aqui! :) Mas já que esse fórum é americano... Let's speak English!

Well, I think I'm going to stay with my pan-&-scan edition for a while! I'd like to buy the European edition, but since it's bare-bones, I'm gonna wait the American Special Edition - wich I belive is coming some time in the future!

I hope so too.
I've been this close to buying a R1 copy on eBay (there are some reasonable prices out there actually), and there are a few legit R1 copies too.

But I keep thinking that with the sequels coming out, and so many titles being rereleased, I might just hang about and we'll have a new copy in a years time perhaps.

We can but hope.

Mulan was supposed to be re-released on DVD in Europe last year, I think, but for some reason it was cancelled.
I'm still hoping they will re-release it, since it is my favorite "new generation" Disney film.

And it was possibly to have all new features - the Disney catalogue included in some releases stated: "DVD Extras: We are still busy developing DVD extras for this release" - perhaps a general cop-out message, but perhaps there was some truth to the statement.

Of course, Mulan was quickly withdrawn in the UK as it featured a headbutt that was supposed to be snipped out.

REALLY? A 2 disc set!
Is it still available? What kind of bonus material does it include?
I hope you're no kidding on this one... I simply must have it if I can...

As far as I can see (www.hmv.co.jp and www.Amazon.co.jp) there is no Mulan disc currenty avaialble in Japan.

There was one released in 1999 listed on the Amazon site, but I cannot decipher the kanjii writing so see if it was the Disney one or not (but it's possible as the film opened in Japan on 26 September 1998 according to the IMDB).

Actually I just checked the Japanese Amazon site as well. They often list also earlier out-of-print releases, and there was no 2-disc Mulan DVD listed.
I should have known it was too good to be true...

Wow, I'm so happy because of that!! I mean, it increases a lot the chances of Disney releasing a 2-disc set in the USA!
How bizarre... I live in Brazil, but I'm happy it's gonna be released in the USA! Maybe it's because I'm already used to the idea that if I want a good-quality Disney DVD, I have to import it! Here in my country, Disney just releases sub par DVDs (of course, there are exceptions, like "The Rescuers" - wich was released here before the USA, and it does have an insert! :) )

I looked for some information about the "Mulan CE DVD", but I couldn't find anything! I was wondering... Is it the coverart of the DVD? Well, I think it's great!

Oh, and just check the "Hercules" coverart!
