Here's what I propose we do.
Beginning, say, Friday, everyone post a list of their top 3-5 films of the year in the big Oscar catagories. (I'm not going to bother doing all of them, just the big ones to see if this is a success, and then if it is we'll probably do more next year.) This poll would ideally run for a week or so, and then the votes would disappear and I (and some who agree to help) would would count up the votes.
Then, when that's counted up, I'll post the top 3-5 vote getters in each category as the official nominees. For 1-2 weeks I'd run a "finals" poll in which the nominations would be voted on by the forum public. Then when that poll concludes, I'd again count votes and then those would be Our Oscar winners, which of course would be posted for the whole forum to see.
For example, being theoretical. Let's say that John Doe nominates his top 5 films of 2003 (for this example I'm using books, so as not to swade voting if we do do this.)
Best Book
1 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling
2 The Slippery Slope by Lemony Snicket
3 The Wedding by Ncholas Sparks
Each of those would then get one vote. Then, if his wife Jane Doe logs on and wants to vote and coincidentially picks those same titles, they would be voted for again. The top 3-5 titles in each category would then go to the voting round in which the forum would vote on which of those three titles is best. It then would be the winner.
Make sense?
Good.
Here are the categories I suggest we use.
Best Picture
Best Director
Best Animated Feature
Best Editing
Best Song
Best Score
Best Actor
Best Actress
Best Supporting Actor
Best Supporting Actress
Best Sound
Best Special Effects
Best Cinematography
Best Original Screenplay
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Sequel*
Special Acchievement in Filmmaking**
and if there are any more you want to use, mention it and we'll as a board think about it but it's too much work for me to do every single category in the awards show, so obviously pick the biggies.
*Sure, this isn't an official Academy category, but seeing as 2003 was overwhelmed with sequels I thought it'd be appropriate.
**This can be anything at all you think deserves a special nod.
A few things:
1) No, I am NOT intending this as ONLY a Disney poll. Otherwise I would have put it in General Discussion. Sure, absolutely, if you think that Disney films deserve the nomination, give it to them. But even though this is a Disney board, I want this poll to be for ALL films. As I said before, I'm a fan of film in general and not just Disney and I think that goes for most of us here even if we choose not to show it. So this should be for the entire filmmaking world, notjust Disney, even though this is a Disney board.
2) Pirates of the Caribbean is a wildcard as far as it comes to Screenplay. On the one hand, it can be seen as an original screenplay because the ride has no story and they took more or less just the title and bare concept, but on the other hand it could be argued that it's adapted from the ride. So, as a board, let's decide what we want to do about that.
3) If there's anything else you want to contribute, such as suggested other categories for awards, please post in this thread and it will be considered by myself and the forum as a whole, but no promises. Thanks.
Okay then.
DO NOT PLACE YOUR NOMINATIONS IN THIS THREAD! I'm just posting this (admittedly detailed) thread to outline the general concept and see if this is something that everyone here would be interested in doing. IF we get enough willing perticipants and voulenteers to help out with vote counting and such, then we'll do it and I'll post another thread for the actulal nominations. If you post your nominations in this thread they will be void and WILL NOT be counted! Thanks for understanding.
I've said before in this post that I simply cannot do this without help. So if you'd like to help at all, perticularly with counting votes, drop me a line by private message. Thanks guys!
So -- what do you all think? Is this something you'd be interested in perticipating in?
