I think we can put our money on her being a frog for a nice amount of the movie. I mean Musker and Clements have had a heroine who couldn't speak, a prince who was a beast, and a street-rat become a prince for the majority of the movie. Most likely Maddy will be a diva who sings a lot of jazz. A witch turns her into a frog, and she'll stay that way for the rest of her life unless she learns an important lesson. But there's a catch. She has to learn the lesson before Mardi Gras, or she'll be a frog forever. That's probaly what will happen, but I may be wrong.Aladdin from Agrabah wrote: In Beauty and the Beast there are singing objects but Belle is not a teacup or a clock. They took us to a magical journey under the sea, they show us how a beautiful girl can look into a heart of a beast, they even made us fly on a magic carpet...
Someday the magic will return!

But it has already been retooled!PatrickvD wrote:as for Rapunzel, I think the fact that we're not hearing of it can only mean one thing:
major retooling.
If they change it from 3D to 2D animation, I swear I will break into my school chemistry lab and drink Blue Benedict's Solution, and hopefully ... die.

Well, I hope you are wrong because I'm totally sick of such kind of stories. I mean that's Brother Bear for goodness sake! If they want its failure to be repeated through a similar story, then they should go ahead and write a story like that. Okay, it also reminds us of the Beast, but hey, he was the guy, while we could still enjoy a beautiful young lady on the screen- who, most importantly, was the leading lady of the film.UmbrellaFish wrote:Most likely Maddy will be a diva who sings a lot of jazz. Anyway, it doesn't seem to me that Maddy has to learn a lesson- she's a humble chambermaid after all. Most likely the spoiled diva she works for has to learn a lesson. And this spoiled diva- beautiful and kind chambermaid thing reminds me of Cinderella's story a little bit.

Where does it say she was a chambermaid? I've never read that. And as much as I'm sick of those movies, too, it's still a possibillty (a large one, in fact).Aladdin from Agrabah wrote:Well, I hope you are wrong because I'm totally sick of such kind of stories. P.S. Brother Bear is too bad. I believe it actually grossed more than Lilo and Stitch.
According to the cast list:UmbrellaFish wrote:Where does it say she was a chambermaid? I've never read that. And as much as I'm sick of those movies, too, it's still a possibillty (a large one, in fact).

[MADDY] A 19-year-old African American chambermaid. Bright, resourceful, ambitious, intense. A little too grown-up for her age. Dialect: Mild southern colloquial.
Also, Brother Bear did make more than Lilo & Stitch in total worldwide grosses, but Lilo did much better domestically.

Re: The Frog Princess
I did read the press release, but a female version of The Frog Prince could be called original. After all, The Lion King was called an original story but it was an animal version of Hamlet! I heard it called an original story in books I read and on the internet. What I meant by original was the only relation to the Frog Prince would be that Maddy is a princess turned into a Frog. The rest of the story could be original and not do the whole Prince finds her, takes her in, and only after learning to love her, kisses her deal.PatrickvD wrote:well, if you had simply read Disney's press release you would have known:
"The Frog Princess" is based on an original story written by Disney's acclaimed filmmaking duo John Musker & Ron Clements ("The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin," "Hercules"), who will also direct.
And by the way, thanks for being the first to show us a glimpse of Maddy!
That's very clever thinking, but I don't think that will happen because the press release says, "From the heart of Louisiana's mystical bayous and the banks of the mighty Mississippi comes an unforgettable tale of love, enchantment and discovery with a soulful singing crocodile, voodoo spells and Cajun charm at every turn." Plus, the casting call reveals:Aladdin from Agrabah wrote:Then maybe it has nothing to do with frogs!
Something else came to my mind right now; What if "Frog" is the name of the jazz club where she sings and when she becomes a major star she is known as "The Frog Princess"?
I have been wrong many times in my predictions, but I'd say that magic is going to make Maddy a frog, the magic of the "sinister bad guy" Dr. Duvailer. But that's my guess. Anyway, it's going to be a mystery how she becomes princess, but I'll be sad if she's just a princess of Jazz...[DR. DUVALIER] A 30-40 year old Voodoo magician/fortune teller. African American. Charming, charismatic, smooth and a sinister bad guy. Theatrical and grandiose.
[MAMA ODIE] An elderly, 200 year old Voodoo priestess/fairy god-mother. African American. Broad, comic, eccentric. Benevolent, wise and all knowing. A mixture of Moms Mabley & Yoda.

Re: The Frog Princess
I think Maddy becomes a Princess because (according to the cast list) she falls in love with Prince Harry who is a real Prince from England!Disney Duster wrote: Anyway, it's going to be a mystery how she becomes princess, but I'll be sad if she's just a princess of Jazz...

No, I really doubt that. Cause think about it. This may be Disney first African American princess, but it is also probaly the first African American princess for anything. I really think many people will buy/buy tickets to see it.goodreel wrote:the press release mentions "a singing crocodile, voodoo spells and Cajun charm". added to the mix - music by Randy Newman and a really ugly lead character, this sounds like a trainwreck waiting to happen. It's gonna be a tough sell for middle America.
P.S. I wouldn't be surprised if this premiered in Feburary.
Ok, it is quite obvious that ALL of these pictures of the Princess, Maddy, are completely different, meaning that they are most likely just concept art. As someone has already stated, just think of how some of Disney princesses were originally drawn. Some of the concept art pictures for the other princesses are rediculous looking, but the end Princess turned out to be wonderful. Give Disney a little credit guys, with animation and directing veterans Musker and Clements on board, I'm sure Maddy will turn out just fine!goodreel wrote:the press release mentions "a singing crocodile, voodoo spells and Cajun charm". added to the mix - music by Randy Newman and a really ugly lead character, this sounds like a trainwreck waiting to happen. so she has to be gorgeous? why??? Who cares if she's not the standard beauty. I'd prefer a good story over a good looking princess. Heck I'd love it if she's kinda chubby.
Jennifer Hudson-chubby.
Seriously, that would be awesome, imagine all the chubby Barbie dolls? Disney could start a beauty-myth evolution.

I figured I'd jump in since I'm from New Orleans. That pic of the "jazz festival" some keep talking about is not a jazz festival, its a Mardi Gras parade! Look at the float. Each parade has the crowning of a king and queen, so it's definitely appropriate to have Maddy as a princess/queen in New Orleans.
