color vs. sharpness - why can't we have both?
No one is arguing that the new release isn't the sharpest - It IS. But look at how drastically the color has been altered? The bright, vivid hues are now incredibly dull. Whoever did the color timing did a TERRIBLE job on this DVD.

I don't like that first shot in the review
I don't like that first shot in the review
I don't understand how anyone can find the 2007 restoration's colors to be dull, especially after comparing it to some previous transfers. Everything's far more vivid in this release and not as flat as the older ones. The early 90's laserdisc's colors were bleeding and blooming all over the place. I seriously doubt Wendy's nightgown and eyes were supposed to be an unearthly turquoise like in that transfer. The colors on the DVD match the designs seen in the galleries.
As for the DVD itself, while it's definitely the weakest Platinum to date content-wise, my expectations were so low that I was able to enjoy what little was added for this release. If Disney had included the Christmas show, a featurette about the deleted "Never Smile at a Crocodile," and various trailers, I wouldn't have minded the recycling of the 16-minute featurette. If Disney didn't want spend any more money creating new features, that still wouldn't excuse the special and trailers since those would only need to be mastered on DVD. I wonder what would've happened if One Hundred and One Dalmatians was released now and Peter Pan in March of 2008. Despite not being much of a Dalmatians fan, I think I would've preferred this arrangement. One Hundred and One Dalmatians has no "making of" existing anywhere, so they would've had to create that (and most of the other supplements) from scratch. I think we would've gotten a Dalmatians release similar to Lady and the Tramp's, and a Peter Pan release similar to The Little Mermaid's. As it is, Dalmatians still has enough time to get a substantial release, but Pan gets the short stick. I'll just be happy that we got to see the restoration a year earlier than intended.
Oh, and did anyone else get a collectible film image with their purchase? I bought my copy at FYE, and the guy (who was apparently a Peter Pan, very cool) said I was the first person to purchase the DVD that day (I went in about 11:30). He gave me this stock card that features a mock film frame in the corner of the Lost Boys saluting Peter. The bottom features a concept sketch of them all lined up next to each other (which can be seen in the DVD's galleries). The back of the card features a summary of the movie with a picture of Never Land from above. I'll try to scan it later if I can remember to.

Of course the color of the 2007 DVD matches what is in the galleries - they want it ALL to match. Remember that these are 3-strip Technicolor films, and they had a chart showing what colors would look like AFTER processing and printing in Technicolor. Referencing original layouts or even cels would not be accurate as they were colored according to how they would photograph and NOT how they looked to the naked eye.
Yes, the color bleeds on the 1991 Laserdisc, and I'm not saying we should all try to track it down. I'm posting images to show that each incarnation appears to keep getting further and further away from the way the films always did - and were supposed - to look.
I'll bet in 2002 everyone was praising that DVD to death, and now the same people are quick to tear it down. Some thing with the video release before that. In another 7 or 8 years, people will look back on this release and say, "We thought THAT looked good?!"

Oh, really? Look at the screenshot below from the 2005 DVD of CINDERELLA - so you think the whites of the stepmother's eyes should be that unnatural shade of turquoise? Odd that none of the previous releases looked like that...

Um, I've been doing that with many Disney animated features the past few weeks, and I've posted pictures here. I don't see how anyone can think the 2007 DVD is the best by far, but then we all have our own opinions.

Well i just got done watching the platinum edition on my Toshiba DLP projector and it was amazing, the picture and sound just fantastic.
i was able to see the movie at the ELcapitan last month when they had the 2 week run. and the dvd picture was just as breathtaking and beautiful as the print they used at the elcapitan.
the only thing that upsets me is that not only do they ruin the packaging for the dvd with that stupid Disney Movie Rewards banner printed on there, but my dvd didnt even have the rewards coupon code in the box.
i had to go back to circuit city and they opended 3 additional ones before i finally got that stupid code.
and the disney movie rewards ad(yeah you might as well call it that) on the back near the proof of purchase is the most obnoxious ill conceived promotion idea ever it even tops the record companies placeing the stickers on the actual case and not the rapper. telling you about the hit song included in the cd.
and its even more stupifying that they printed this schlock on the cover, when there is a STICKER on the dvd sleve saying the same crap.
before i went to ameoba to trade in my limited edition today i scanned the cover and printed up that to use for my platinum edition cover.
its funny i was still able to get 30 bucks trade in storecredit on the Limited edition dvd. so in all reality i really didnt pay anything for the platinum edition cool huh, if i had waited till next week to trade in the Ltd edition i would have been lucky to get 5 dollars.

Hey-
I was wondering if anyone here could post pictures/scans of the inserts?? maybe? There's a REALLY small chance I'll get Peter Pan today, and if I don't, I won't be able to get it until this weekend. (Or possibly friday night). And honestly, the wait is killing me! I'm REALLY anxious to see any Jungle Book preview!
Also, to those of you that picked up the Hook figure, can you possibly post a more close up photo than Best Buy's is?
Thank you!

Well, I guess it's a good think I already have the GC of Aristocats. I honestly detest loosing any picture be it matting a full screen picture, or panning-and-scanning.Ltinker1976 wrote:Oh and it looks like the Aristocats trailer answers the question as to what format the movie will be in. seeing as the trailer is widescreen.
iam glad.

Anyways, I really want to go get my copy at Best Buy so I can chose which figure I want (I'll be getting the one of Hook, because I don't have one of him yet), although that means waiting 'til the weekend. Oh well. I turned down Circuit City's offer for that Little Golden Classics book of TLM when I bought the DVD the first weekend there, so Best Buy finally has a decent offer for a Disney DVD (finally!).

WHy though, its finally being presented in its Original Theatrical release aspect ratio. when i used to work as a Projectionist at muvico palm harbor 10 theatres back in florida. we had the Aristocats as part of The splicers summer movie camp one year.and the print which was very old and in pretty poor shape(in fact it broke 2 times durring the 10am wed morning kiddie screening) but it was in 1:85:1 flat aspect ratio.brotherbear wrote:Well, I guess it's a good think I already have the GC of Aristocats. iam glad.Does the trailer still advertise it as a 2-DISK SE? (I'm fearing what happened to Tarzan will happen with Aristocats).

i ask you do you feel the same way about watching a stanley kuberick movie in the theatre in which its presented in 1:85:1 even though he intended into be seen in 1:33:1
a few years ago when they had a theatrical reisuue of The wizard of Oz it was presented 1:33:1 in theatres across th country, they didnt matte it or try to format it to the flat aspect ratio. so unless you were watching in a theatre that had masking that could acommidate the old acadmey aspect ratio, you had the Pillar Boxing effect in the theatre in which the entire screen is not filled and you have the black bars on the side of the picture.
when we screened aristocats as i mentioned it was a flat print and there was no pillarboxing and it filled the screen which had the masking set or 1:85:1
oh and yes its still listed as a two disc set trumpeting the discovery of a unused song.
Oh and the Jungle Book 40th anniversery platnium edition dvd picture looks absolutely stunning in the trailer. i can not wait to pick that up now that i have seen that trailer. take a look cause its a sight to behold.

Well, I hoped for more, but what can I do? I'll likely be picking this up Thursday night (yes, I need to DVR "Survivor" and "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?") because tomorrow I have no way to get down there because my sister, who can drive, is going to the library, my mom isn't coming home because she is going to the Aronoff Center to watch "All Shook Up" and my dad can't tolerate me. So Thursday it is, and I hope that I can find a Vault Disney title so that I can save $3 dollars on it.

Well today was one of my favorite days of the year (Platinum Edition Tuesday, as I call it). I have to say that overall I am pretty pleased with Peter Pan's Platinum Edition release. I purchased my copy from Best Buy this morning, and also picked up the free action figure - I chose Captain Hook - Sure the figure is kinda lame, but hey, it was free. I was so happy when I first saw the DVD, the cover art looked really beautiful in person, I didn't know there were those holographic rays coming off of Tinker Bell on the slipcover. As for the film, I have admitted many times that Peter Pan wasn't really one of my favorite Disney films, but as has happened a couple times before, after watching the movie on Platinum Edition, I have a lot more appreciation for the film and it probably climbed considerable notches on my list of favorite Disney Animated classics. Sure, I can see how long time Peter Pan fans would be a little disappointed by the Platinum Edition release, seeing how many of the bonus features were transfered over from the previous Special Edition. However, all the bonus features were new to me, I felt it was decent. The skimpy 15 minute "making of Peter Pan" was the thing that annoyed me the most - what happened to the beefy 45 minute "making of" segments of Platinum Edition's past? Overall though I have to say I'm fairly pleased with Peter Pan's Platinum Edition release - but now I am REALLY excited for The Jungle Book's Platinum Edition because it has been one of my favorites since I was a little boy. Bring it on....

Because all that was on it were some games and like a music video. That's probably why you wanted it, for a music video, since everyone knows you love them ever so much. Now if you do excuse me my dear sir, I must be off to attend to my wonderful studies of the English language, which I do find to be most exciting. After all, German is not a "coming" language, it's quite dull, mind you. Oh, while you are out, pray do bring me some wonderfully delicious cucumber sandwiches, as long as Lane went to the market today. Good day Ernest. That is if you are Mr. Ernest Worthing. You know, you could possibly be either Mr. Ernest Worthing, or the Mr. Ernest Worthing who is indeed not Mr. Ernest Worthing, but is in fact Mr. Algernon Moncrieff. But, who really knows who Ernest is anyway?Matt wrote:Why didn't anyone want to get the Extra Bonus DVD Disc at Walmart?![]()
I say it is better than any action figure or pin any day! At least I have a three disc set.
