Cars/POTC Blu-Rays to be 2 Discs

Yay. Moments like these confirm my resolve to get that HDTV and PS3. I cannot wait for these releases. Kudos to Disney for making these releases worthwhile.
Boo to my wallet, which is dwindling lately...I definitely am becoming choosier when buying dvds.

It sounds veryyyyy strange to me that even with Blu-Ray incredible storage capacity those releases need 2 discs Anyway, I am probably going to get Cars. Eventually. With my PS3!

I don't think technically they do need 2 discs. A 50G Blu Ray disc can, in theory, hold around 8 hours of HD content. That should be enough for Cars and it's supplements at least, if not the Pirates films (which after all, only have about 6-7 hours of footage on the current releases). I doubt all of the bonus footage will be in HD anyway, meaning in theory another 5-6 hours could possibly be put on. (If everything was in SD, a BD50 can hold 23 hours of content!)

However, 2 disc sets sound better. They make the individual feel that they are getting a better deal.

That's what I think too. We are used to 2-disc DVDs being far superior. Anyway, I don't care so much, as long as the price isn't too high "just to make the individual feel better". As of now Blu-Rays Discs price seem reasonable so let's hope it stays the same.

You couldn't be more wrong.

You need at least 26 GB for 2 hours of true High Definition quality video alone alone, not counting the sound, and for the sound you need like 3-4GB for each uncompressed sound soundtrack. So your 8 hour figures are totally wrong (probably derived from the A-man's gospell) useful only for greatly reduced quality image and sound. Disney has stated Cars as a showcase of what Blu-ray from digital files can do, and it's doing the correct approach by using 50GB discs with AVC for the movies plus disc for the extras. Remember that 1080p x 1920 is 8 times the resolution of 480i x 720 and a DVD is only 8.5 GB

Also, we've learned from our industry sources that Disney's forthcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest Blu-ray Discs (due 5/22) will offer all of the previous DVD extras, along with some new features created just for the high-definition release. Among these: Curse of the Black Pearl will include the ability to select items of interest while watching the film, thus programming your own documentary to watch after the film, while Dead Man's Chest will enable you to play a game Liar's Dice with characters from the film. Both discs will be hosted by Jolly Roger, similar to the Magic Mirror host for the Snow White: Platinum Edition DVD. Both films will be encoded in AVC and will feature Uncompressed PCM 5.1 audio.
