Howard the Duck (1986)
Howard the Duck (1986)
Who wants this to come to DVD? I wish they would just release it already, theres some pirated DVD's around that are anamorphic widescreen and have an HD Source, if pirates can do that why can't Lucas?

The duck scared the crap out of me, so I really don't like this movie. I was like 6 years old when I saw it, and I got scared. That's why I really don't like this movie. It had the same effect on me as E.T. which is still like the worst horror movie to me. I can't even see a picture of E.T. without freaking out.
I'm weird I know.

I don't see all the hate for it. I liked it and have fond memories as a kid watching it. Though the most recent viewing years back on TV, I noticed how sexuall explicit it was for being about a 4' talking duck, but as a kid, I guess they flew over my head. I never viewed it as some stellar Oscar-worthy film. It was just fun and easy to make fun of, but without being so bad you couldn't watch it. It was a B-comedy movie. But then again, B-movies are the bomb to me. I love watching the most ridiculous plotlines. It keeps me from getting too serious. I'd buy the DVD. I wouldn't pay over $20 for it, but I'd buy it.

I'd buy it too, though I probably wouldn't pay more than 5 dollars for it. But I've gotten used to getting even GOOD movies for that price, NEW! So... In truth though, I don't know if I've ever seen this one from beginning to end. I would like to though, and I remember enough about it to know I'd like to have it in my collection. Even if it's cheezy, I have an appreciation for that sort of thing too, within reason (I don't care for the Troma stuff, for example).

The reason why it gets so much hate is that people were wanting to jump on Lucas' first failure. The man at that point was Hollywood's golden goose. With the Star Wars Trilogy, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Temple of Doom all major successes (Last Crusade wasn't released when Howard came out) the critics wreaked havoc on Lucas for making a B movie. Well, the comic book it came from was exactly the same (albeit the comic was infinitely better). Just goes to show what jealousy will do.
The movie isn't great, I admit, but it wasn't the worst thing ever made. It was certainly better than Independence Day which some people will defend to their dying breath.
Oh, and the HD2DVD bootleg that is out there is amazing quality. Better than a lot of commercial releases.

The studio was also pushing for more effects, since it had Lucas's name attached to it they figured that people would be looking for more effects work. So, I'm sure the studio interferring didn't help matters, also remember that Howard the Duck was really only produced by Lucas and was written and directed by others. The movie is actually fun and entertaining and really doesn't deserve the criticism its gotten over the years.thatartguy wrote:The reason why it gets so much hate is that people were wanting to jump on Lucas' first failure. hi
obviously it is in very high demand so it would probablly be a great seller on dvd, i mean on e-bay the vhs goes for $25+
Click Here and see how much this bootleg dvd of it is going for. Universal would be smart if they tried to figure out the situation with rights etc. And somebody get it released on dvd pdq.

Damn....$150? Crazy. Though widescreen....I am impressed, since as far to my knowledge, the VHS release was in standard tv format. But I think whoever would pay that much for it is just stupid. It will eventually come to DVD. Killer Clowns From Outer Space did and that movie was up there in the cheeze factor too. But I agree, if Universal sees that, they may see the demand is high enough to bring it out.
The movie is still seen on TV in Spain and Germany on a regular occassion so there apparently is also a worldwide interest. Its only a matter of time before they do. Maybe not within this year or even the next, but eventually anything that can make money, will be on DVD. It has a pretty big cult following.
