Hoo was a great movie. I love it, and for me the only movie in which I can stand Julia Robert. For me Hook is the much better "sequel", and Dustin Hoffman in the role of Hook is absolutely hilarious, evil, just great!!
But Hook is about Peter Pa having grwn up, and having married Wendy's grand-daughter and has two kids with her that Hook kidnaps and now Peter has to bring them back home, and at the same time remember who he is: Peter Pan, the kid that never wanted t grow up.

But there was another one from 2003 I think that had the actual Peter Pan story.

Question: There was a live-action Peter Pan that came out a few years ago. Was this any god?
It was good with the critics, imo it's the second best Pan adaption and has a romantic storyline unlike the Disney version. It also contains a scene not in the play when Peter still having not really met Wendy flys into her house and hovers over her bed gazing at her, Wendy wakes up the shock causes Peter to bash his head on the ceiling and leaves. Wendy thinks she dreamed it up and the next day at school she makes a drawing of Peter hovering over her, the teacher thinks it has a Freudian meaning, some audiences were offended at it's inclusion.

I found it to be excellent. I'll even go as far as to say I like it a hair more than Disney's. Wendy is much more of an active participant in this version. She's pretty much the main character and has even more screentime than Peter himself. It digs a lot deeper than Disney's version, and has a great sense of wit and whimsy. The production design is also incredible. A lot of people who criticize it for looking fake don't understand it at all. The film was designed to look like a moving storybook, so there's lots of saturated colors and tons of extravagant detail. My only complaint is that the film moves by too quickly. It's about half an hour longer than Disney's, but because they crammed it more events than the animated version, it never gets a chance to breathe. Heck, the children's flight to Neverland is actually shorter than the "You Can Fly" sequence. Apparently a lot of footage was cut out, but instead of huge chunks ending up on the cutting room floor, portions of practically every scene were removed, which slightly harmed the pacing. Still, it's definitely worth checking out. Disney's version is better at pacing, but Universal's is better in pretty much every other aspect.

Hook (the film, not the character) is a mixed bag for me. The first third and last third are really well-made, but the middle act drags. This is mainly because I can't stand the Lost Boys at all. They're more like delinquents than mischievous kids. They're pretty much the only thing about Hook I actively dislike, but because they take up so much screentime, they really bring down the film. The Lost Boys scenes feel anachronistic, like something out of a different film. Everything else (especially Hook, Smee, and his crew) is great, and feels like the Neverland you'd expect from Spielberg.

Okay, first off, I love the live action (although the Disney version will always own my heart). But the story was far off from the real story.
I highly recommend a viewing. It is good fantasy fun. But here is what was utterly wrong.
- The mermaids. They're supposed to be more bubbly-bitchy, not psycho-creepy.
- The "Black Castle." WTF was that?
- The crocodile. Was HUGE.
- Tiger Lily. Was never captured. It was John and Michael.
- Hook flies. That was so uncool.
- The "love/growing up" storyline was wierd and disturbing. I thought it was unnecessary. That was never the core of the book.
- The NeverBird was totally non-present. I was looking forward to that part.
- Aunt Milicent. Where did she come from? (although she was a really funny character)

If you like(d) this film, and have not read Barrie's original tale, you really should. It will make you wish that they had left it all in the movie.

Word.
:pan: Love It.

I wonder if Best Buy would price Match, still let me use my $10 off reward certificate AND get the free action figure.

I've seen HOOK and some parts I can watch, but I agree - the lost boys are annoy-ing!
Disney Channel died when they stopped airing movies with Haley mills (Parent Trap and Pollyanna) and fun adventure movies like Swiss Family Robinson. R.I.P. the REAL Disney Channel. Date of Death: When the shows became teenie bopperish.

I'm hoping to do the exact same thing. Our family just got our new $10 (as well as $5) Reward Zone Certificates, and I'm hoping to use one of them for Peter Pan, and price match to Circuit City, AND get one of the action figures. Boy, I feel sorry for who ever is manning the cash register that I'll be at!!

I have personally never seen the Live Action "Peter Pan", though I did think "Hook" was a very clever film (well, the plot anyway). Actually, I really enjoyed the film. Maybe it will air on the Disney channel to promote the Peter Pan PE..?? Anyway, I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it yet!

I'm also really anxious to see what exactly the figures at Best Buy look like! I'd love to get a *good-looking* figure to display in front of my animated film collection!! :D Only three more days left, guys!!! :D :D :D (PS- I'm still very dissapointed by the lack of bonus features (no trailers makes brotherbear very sad! ) but at least we're getting a new Platinum with a Lowry restoration!!!)

Well...

- Both interpretations work. Barrie said they were stuck-up during the day, but creepy at night. The Universal movie shows them at night. My only regret with them is how brief their screentime is.

- Yeah, the Black Castle was random. Apparently Marooner's Rock and Mermaid Lagoon weren't good enough for them. This was a pretty pointless set change.

- Yeah, the crocodile was so enormous that you couldn't blame Hook for wanting to wet himself. Still, Hook in this movie is so less comical than any other interpretation that having him shriek like a banshee over a normal croc wouldn't have gelled well with his characterization.

- I don't get what you mean. Tiger Lily WAS captured. John and Michael were added to the scene partially to raise the stakes and partially to give them something to do.

- While I found Hook flying interesting, I do understand why people wouldn't accept that. It contradicts the concept of flight in Neverland since you can only fly if you're a child. Then again, the movie never actually gives the explanation the book does since they cut out adult Wendy.

- I think the love aspect of the book is in fact there, just not to the extent the movie shows it. It's obvious in the book that Wendy's in love with Peter, even though he doesn't return the feelings. Since the core of both the book and film is growing up, the filmmakers just linked Wendy's romantic interest in Peter with her character arc of growing up. It helps flesh out her character. I think they handled it well, though I do think it was a mistake for them to have Peter energized by Wendy's kiss.

- I agree with you there. The Neverbird scene would've been great. My guess is they left it out because it'd be hard to include it thanks to the whole Black Castle scenario.

- They added Aunt Milicent because they changed Mr. Darling's persona so he wouldn't remind the audience so much of Hook. They made him neurotic instead of brash and commanding, and they had Milicent act as person behind the scenes that causes him to do the things he does. I have a feeling scenes that made this clearer were cut from the film because the first twenty minutes are the film's choppiest.

Peter Pan Dvd

Post by steven132 »

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum. I have the dvd and the presentation is really good, but I don't know if its that much of a different from the previous release. The sound is perfect, but to me the when the characters are shown from a distance they seem overly blury or washed out. There are no bleishes, scratches, or flickers I noticed. One thing that really bugged me that on the dvd case cover they put the logo for the rewards program right on the image not as a sticker so I'll have to look at it even when the program has ended, I hope that dont continue doing it. I can try and answer any other questions you have.

Is the Movie Rewards logo just on the cardboard slipcover or on the actual interior artwork as well? I don't care about slipcovers, but if it's on the actual paper artwork sleeve, I'll be ticked.

Its on the actual dvd cover, but a sticker on the slip cover, I couldn't believe they would do something so stupid, only thinking about advancing the program. And its also on the back in case you missed it.

.....WTF, Disney?!?! They're really trying to aggravate us with this release, aren't they? Thanks for bringing this to our attention, steven. I feel like calling their customer service and complaining about this.

SERIOUSLY!! An add for a temporary rewards program right on the actual cover? That is lame, tacky, and ultimately aggravating!

Wow that actually is really annoying. It makes it look so...not special edition...I usually don't really care about stuff like that, but must they corode the covers with unneccesary things? Aggggh.

Well well...

I'm miffed at their screentime, too. And I maintain that Barrie didn't intend the mermaids to be so nasty looking...

D'oh. You're right. Whoops. :P But they focus more on John and Michael being captured instead of Tiger, IMO.

I really didn't like that part. It felt very un-Pan.

I didn't say the love wasn't there, just not to the extent that it was in the movie. In the movie, it's her love that makes him go, but then he doesn't go home with her. If they were going to stretch it that far, why not tie it off with a happier ending?
I also found the "Pan, you're pink!" line simultaneously ridiculously funny and just ridiculous.

I can get onboard with Millicent. I just added that because I was on a roll :P , and it was just another thing that differed from the book.

By the way, Jason Isaacs RAWKS as Hook, for all those who haven't seen it.

As annoying and tacky as that little Disney Rewards thing is, I'm glad it's shoved into the lower-left corner rather than being in the middle of it or covering up something important.

Geez, the Disney DVD logo, the FastPlay plug, and now the Disney Rewards thing. No offense, Disney, but I would kinda like to look at the coverart for my DVDs without seeing an advertizement.

The Action Figures actually look very very lame, i was going to go to bestbuy and get it there but after seeing the ad in the LA TIMES WEEKEND EDITION, i think iam just going to take the FRYS AD which has the movie for 14.99 to circuit city so i can get the cdrom and 10 percent off from the price match.
also bestbuy wont let you use a reward zone coupon when you get a price match. technically you arent suppose to even use a reward zone coupon on a new release but if you get a cute cashier you can flirt with sometimes they will go ahead and give it to you even though they arent suppose to. but they definately wont use a reward zone with a price match cause the manager has to come over and approve the price match with his code in the register and mgmt wont let you use the both.

You have GOT to be kidding me!!! I really am loosing all respect for Disney. First with the Disney Reward thing on the cover, and then the title: Peter Pan: Platinum Edition (instead of: Peter Pan: Special Edition)!! And thoses figures look REALLY bad. I was hoping they would look at least somewhat decent. Guess I shouldn't ask too much, eh?

I didn't know Circuit City does pricematches!!!! PLUS 10% off that price? wow! I might just do what you're doing! (only, where's /what's "FRYS"?)

Thank you so much!!
