Walt Disney Classics - The Black Diamond Series

Post by TonyWDA »

I'm sure everybody here it very familiar with the Walt Disney Classics series. I just wanted to open an appriciation thread to this line of Disney classics. Did anybody here actually get KIND OF scared of the logo?

Well, if you'd like to say anything about this line of Disney classics, please do so! :D

Oh! By the way, here are the pictures of the logos, from 1984-1988.

This is the 1984 version:

This was the new 1988 version, first released with Cinderella:

And this the 1992 version, often paired with the muffled version of the music from the 1988 version:

I love those logos. Thanks! I missed those logos from the days of the "Black Diamond" era. Can you post the Masterpiece Collection logo, please? Thanks!

Wow, great thread. The Black Diamond Classics are undoubtedly my favorite series for Disney animated films. All the film were treated equally, and the cover art had some of the most on-model stuff ever seen on Disney covers. You can see them all on a page that's part of this very site:

http://www.ultimatedisney.com/blackdiamonds.html

My favorite cover is a draw between Cinderella's and Peter Pan's. Both just perfectly capture the sense of magic and wonder that I think is lacking in today's photoshoppy covers.

As for opening logos, the one with Sorcerer Mickey introducing Walt Disney Home Video (the last one Jeremy linked to) is kind of eerie to me. I think it's the synthesizer music.

I'm home from school for the weekend and got to see my old Disney VHS's, including the black diamond's that I have. Even though I've replaced most of them with dvds by now, I don't think I'll ever be able to part with them. All of these covers are so classic, but I think my favorite one has been Robin Hood since my childhood.

I totally agree, Disneykid! The use of colour in the artwork for the entire collection was fantastic! Other favourite covers:
The Jungle Book, Alice in Wonderland, The Great Mouse Detective, Aladdin

Wow! That was amazing! The sections dealing with promotions were the most fascinating bits. Despite being a little kid who watched way too much TV, I didn't start noticing Disney's ad campaigns until around the time Aladdin came out. The article also put into perspective when I got each film in the collection. I'm surprised to find that my family was really on top of things. I received most of my films from that collection just shortly after their initial releases. Thanks for sharing that with us!
