For me it's pretty much a toss-up between Timon and Pumbaa and the entire cast of Winnie the Pooh, characters who receive far too much exposure, in my view. I guess I would give the edge toward Timon and Pumbaa, given that they weren't even the stars of the Lion King (and I don't believe that they even came close to "stealing the show") and yet somehow they've managed to hijack the entire post-1994 franchise. I'm by no means a Lion King fan, but whenever I do watch it I find far more enjoyment in the supporting likes of Rafiki, Zazu and Shenzi, Banzai and Ed.

I tend to be more bothered by underrated characters being underrated, than by overrated characters. However, I'm sure I could come up with some if I had more time.

The only thing that jumps into my mind is the way they gave Pepe a major role in Muppet Wizard of Oz, even though he wasn't the right muppet for the part, just so he would be on screen almost the whole time because he is so popular. Personally, Pepe is one of my top favorite Muppets. I even have a plush toy of him and a couple of action figures (though I have other Muppets too, of course), but the fact that he is very funny and people like him is no reason to cast him in roles better suited by other characters. Rizzo would have made far more sense in the role of a waitress Dorothy's equivelant to Toto.

It's blatantly based on Keith Richards, which in some respects actually validates Keith's life choices with drugs and the concequences he now has to lives with (if he's actually aware of any concequences)

[c] He's not funny. I'm sorry, but he's not. He's just annoying.

personally, i love CJS with a passion, probably because i think he (and johnny depp) are just exceptionally beautiful and pretty (i like me a pretty boy).

but. if you think jack sparrow is over-rated, take a look at Elizabeth. SO full of herself, SO snotty, SO NOT THAT WONDERFUL. and she is such, SUCH the wimp. i'm sorry. I can't stand her.

over-rated, not so much. she's on a lot of pirates merchandise, but that's more so for johnny....but she's still gross.

over-rated--i definitely think tinkerbell is over rated. there's so many tinkerbelle shirts and PJs and dolls and erasers and stuff that it makes you want to puke.

and, chernabog_rocks i definitely agree with you about the prince line. there really should be one. then again, i dont know many little boys that would want a doll of a disney prince  maybe a shirt or some pajamas but that's about it.

also, i think the reason that tinkerbell is used for the disney openings is because she is small and a lot of people (me NOT included) find her to be an aesthetically pleasing character. i think she's a brat.

Queen Grimhilde. To me, the Evil Queen gets WAY too much credit for being the first villainess. I personally found her dull, not terrifying.

Tinkerbell is very overrated

All the princesses. I am sorry, but I am also sick and tired of seeing all this princess garbage all over the place. I am sure it's good for little girls, but enough already! I do not see how the merchandise will help boost sales of the movies they are based off.

Whoops, how could I forget Winnie the Pooh and his buddies? Most definitely overrated. I also want to say that the princesses are overrated, but the truth is I like them a lot. And I also want to say that there's too much princess merchandise out there at the moment, but the truth in that is I buy most of it, anyway!

1. Winnie the Pooh (not just the character, but the entire franchise)
2. Cinderella
3. Finding Nemo

Cinderella is clearly given too much attention than the other Disney princesses combined.

And to think that she's your avatar.
She has always given me goosebumps. She's so cold, so realistic when she moves and she's got a lot of majesty. She's very glamorous, too. I simply enjoy watching her on the screen.

Oh, yeah, you know one character who is REALLY overrated? Stitch! Why, oh, why is that ornery critter so popular? I don't even like that guy too much.

Elizabeth gets on my nerves too, specifically on DMC. She may be pretty, but she sure is annoying.

Concerning Stitch: Although I love Stitch, I was very suprised that he was plastered with Mickey, Donald, and Goofy on the 2006 merchandise around Disneyland. Actully, he was plastered on almost all of the merchandise! I'm glad he's receiving attention, but I think it has gone a little overboard.

However, I'll have to go with many others and say that Tinkerbell is the most overrated Disney character

I personally think she is very annoying so I've never been able to like her character.

As others have already said I think she is overrated because she isn't considered a "main character" or even a pivotal character to the Disney movies but she is plastered on everything. She started off the 50th anniversary parade (now Year of A Million Dreams parade), the fireworks show, and is on a good majority of the merchandise Disney produces. I think the Disney marketing teams just saw Tinkerbell as a way to depict the idea of Disney magic with Tinkerbell being a pixie and all. It doesn't hurt that a lot of people think she's really cute.

I can't stand Tinkerbell. I don't like Wendy, either - but she tried to kill Wendy out of her petty jealousy and yet she is upheld as some type of heroine!

I like villains. I like the good guys. I like "grey area" characters; wouldn't have this username if I didn't.
But Tinkerbell's trying to -actually kill someone- ticks me off, and it futher bothers me that everyone ignores that and thinks she is the awesomest awesome that ever awesomed.

Timon and Pumba. Potty humor and lame jokes were great when I was 6, but now I find them incredibly annoying, and their stupid song drives me insane.

The Evil Queen always gets credit for being one of the scariest villans when I find her almost laughable.

All the 7 dwarfs. I don't think a more annoying group has ever graced the screen.

Tigger. Why he is the most popular character from Winnie the Pooh I'll never understand.

I actually like Tinkerbell. She's one of the few chracters I enjoy from Peter Pan. And Stitch is one of the greatest Disney characters in years as far as I'm concerned.

I've always hated Mickey Mouse though... I can't explain, he just rubs me the wrong way. I'd say he is the most overrated character ever.

Queen Grimhilde. To me, the Evil Queen gets WAY too much credit for being the first villainess. I personally found her dull, not terrifying.
Interesting - I always thought of her as the third greatest Disney Villain (after Man and Cruella).

The three villains who I consider to be overrated, in comparison to which very other villain is vastly underrated, are Maleficent (the best of the three, but still overrated) Jafar (basically a more comical take on Maleficent) and Scar (the most overrated of all villains, in my opinion, possibly because the Lion King is such a huge success; he pales in comparison to predicessors Shere Khan and Prince John in terms of lasting appeal). In fact, the only villains currently deserving of all the praise they get are the Queen and Ursula (since Cruella receives very little if any attention at the moment, and isn't really given the praise she deserves, even if I don't stop going on about it).

I agree that Tinkerbell is overrated as well. Yes, the character is designed and animated beautifully, but she isn't even the most appealing character in the film - generally people are divided on appeal, unable to choose between Peter and Hook - and certainly doesn't warrant an entire franchise of her own (next, we'll be having a 'Disney Ravens' franchise or something). I would venture to say she is not even Disney's best fary - I find the Blue Fairy, the Fairy Godmother, Flora, Fauna and Merryweather to be better characters.

Winnie the Pooh deserves a mention as well. Disney's Winnie the Pooh has always annoyed me somewhat because of the Americanisation of the stories; I feel that it lost a lot of its witty, satyrical edge in the process. I remember reading that Pooh is the single character to have made the most money for Disney.

Oh yes, and the princesses franchise. It's a little too sicky sweet. Disney's version of Brats, or Braz, or whatever the thing is.

on tinkerbell haters...as for killing someone...maybe...she is a jealous girl fighting for her man like many females out there...but that doesnt make her right...but she is a favorite b.c she is a memorable char. that never talks, has no lines, and her role in that movie is to protect peter...and yet aaaaalmost everyone likes her and she is on everything disney...she symbolizes good, bad, mystery and enchantment that all is disney...she is the perfect symbol excluding mickey and minnie...

Bah, all this whining because Tink tried to have Wendy killed... The heroes often try to kill the villains. To Tink, Wendy was a villain for trying to steal Peter. And, how is she a hero? Well, she saved Peter's life for one thing. That's pretty major and important. And, after that moment, we see that she really is more important than anyone to Peter. She's far closer to a love interest for him than even Wendy was.

Anyway, you can't weigh Tink's views on killing/death as heavily as human characters. She's not human, and the characters of Disney's Neverland live in a child-minded world where little importance is given to things like death and attempted murder. They're not fully understood, just like romance, which is one of the reasons Wendy didn't fit in. She was already getting too old for that sort of mentality.

This came up in the "underrated" thread, but I have to say that one character that seems overrated to me, as much as I love the character, is Cruella. I found her wildly entertaining, but I just don't find her that "scary," as people often seem to. She is a lot of people's favorite Disney villain, and I have never felt that way about her. Not sure who my fave is, maybe Hades, but I think Maleficent is probably the most intimidating.
