Looks like the BBFC have knowledge/suspect Disney was cruel to animals when the film was shot.
Cuts have also been made to Glory (producers tripped running horses) and The Abyss (making the mouse breathe liquid oxygen - or whatever it was). In both of these cases it was later proved that no harm was done to the animals - but the cuts still stand on all subsequent releases.
Hmmm....feeling conflicted.
The law student part of me is saying "yes the law, the law is all we have! yes, the law is an arse, but we must obey the law!", whereas the part of me that abhores censorship in any form is really hating this decision.
Meanwhile, I can't stand cruelty to animals.

I guess I'll be buying the US copy after all (because fo the extras mind you...).
It is weird that it has been passed uncut before (given that it is a 1937 piece of legislation!), but is trimmed now. No more surprising than the decision here to make the recent 'toned down PC' version of E.T. a PG rating while the original 1982 version was rated G. Strange people at those ratings boards.
Has Pokemon4Ever been cut due to cruelty to Pokemon? They make them BATTLE EACH OTHER!!!! Even the cute little ones.
Old Yeller in the UK has always been cut by 9 seconds. There may still be supplements to be passed, but I doubt it. Old Yeller is not really a film that appeals to the British, so it was never 'big' over here- its more of an American-y type of film.
