If you call for a replacement disc for the 2 mess ups on Vol. 1 and 4, would I still have to pay the $13.90 for both discs. I mean, they should be willingly giving to their customers, after all, we are the ones who buy the DVDs, we should at least get some "benefits" in which we don't have to pay anything.

Well I can't guarantee it for certain, but since it has been clarified as a source which has/had early discs with the correct ratios I'd say it's probably the best chance you've got.
Apart from the fact they don't deliver to America
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

Bought mine at Walmart on the day they came out. My aspect ratio on Disc 4 is correct.

And man did everything on Disc 4 look great. Wonderful top notch job of remastering.

I have only one minor quibble with the entire two discs - the exta on collectability of True Life Adventures stuff was lame. The woman trying to communicate why they are collectible did a really bad job compared to other features like this I have seen. Was really passionless. Although, I would not mind having the Perri stuffie she did.

I just called them and they said they don't know what they are going to do yet for the True Life Adv. discs. He did say that they will send out a return envelope but not to use it until they call back. So, if your discs are bad, please call! I think the more complaints they get, the more likely we are to get replacement discs.

Mr. Toad: The woman you mention from the extras, Stacia Martin, may have seemed passionless to you but believe me she isn't. I just met her on Sunday and she is a big Disney fan. She has been a Disney employee for 27 years and works as a historian and sketch artist. I recommend to all UDers that if she is doing an appearance near you that you go meet her, she is a really cool lady.

I didn't find her passionless at all. In fact, in some of the other volumes, she trips over words with excitement for what she is talking about. She is also on several of the Treasures displaying merchandise and I love those features. Maerj, I'm so jealous that you got to meet her and Roy. That's awesome!

Thanks! It was a really cool time, I had a lot of fun and now have to get a frame for the Mickey sketch. She also told me a couple of things but said not to put them on the internet. LOL its been difficult not posting what was said but she did say that she would be watching! :o

I got my copy of Secrets of Life in the mail yesterday. It was pressed on 10/24/06 and it was sadly pan-and-scanned. I am disappointed. I was hoping to luck out and get one that was widescreen. It would have been really cool if they had made the CinemaScope part in anamorphic widescreen. Does anybody know the logistics of how they were able to change the ratio in the theatre? Maybe they used more than one projector? I understand that the first part of the movie would have required a flat lense and the wide part would have required a curved Scope lense.

It's really quite simple to change aspect ratio in a theater.

In those days, almost all movie theaters were equipped with two projectors. A feature film consists of several reels, each with a running time of 10 - 20 minutes. So all odd reels were run on projector no 1, all even reels on projector no 2. When one reel came to the end, the other projector was started and took over the show. That's called a "changeover". Then the projectionist would thread the next reel on the other projector, and so on...

Now, to change format, the projectionist simply switched lenses and apertures on the projector that was to run the final reel. Immediately after the changeover, the projectionist then pushed a button that would start a motor for opening up the traveling black velvet masks at the sides of the screen. Then, the audience would see the screen slowly growing for some ten seconds before the masks came to a rest at the scope position.

Well I just received Vol.s 3 & 4 from Amazon this morning (not sure where Vol.s 1 & 2 are but that's a worry for another day!)... anyway I just checked and I received the fullscreen version of Secrets of Life! :(

In an ironic twist I also recieved my replacement Superman 14-disc set from Amazon this morning... I am now the proud owner of 2 defective Superman box sets! :(

So what am I checking for when Vol. 1 arrives - there's something wrong with that too - right?

I had a feeling that might be the case but I wasn't sure. I know a more recent projectionist who splices the reels all together so he didn't need to change them. If you use two different projectors I can see very well how they were able to change the lense. Thanks for your input.

Yes, on Volume 1 the color on "Prowlers of the Everglades" is wrong. Red was switched with blue.

I also have received "wrong" versions of those 2 TLA-volumes from Amazon.

Unfortunately I´ve those oversea-troubles with registering at Disney. Anyway, I´ve contacted them through the question link at Disney homepage and asked for replacement possibilities.

They replied that they´re on this case and are rechecking the possibilities for replacement.

So here´s my question: has anybody already news concerning the status quo for the replacment activities at Disney?

I called Disney again today and the girl said that there will NOT be a replacement done. I asked why and she said that the problem isn't big enough to merit an exchange. I told her that some Secrets of Life are out there in the correct format and she said they have no way of getting me a copy of one of those. She also told me I should be thankful they even released these because only Roy wanted them done. If it weren't for Roy these would have not been released.

In the case of the gators she told me if I switched the color cables on my DVD player the problem is solved. I was not very happy about this but I'm not suprised. I'm used to Disney sticking it to me even though I spend a great deal of my income on their products. #@#%#@ Disney....

You are joking. This is highly discouraging. Unbelievable, man. Is it possible that you got just a bitter player in their customer service department?! This response sounds totally at odds with the post immediately prior to yours.

Nope. I'm not joking. They really said this but I thought it might just be a disgruntled worker too tired of answering calls. But maybe this is the official decission now. Does anyone know? Thanks.

Hi guys !

I just got off the phone and spoke to a VERY nice girl named Melissa who transferred my call to a VERY nice guy named Brian. Brian took some time to apologize for the errors and to explain that they're currently still talking about whether or not replacements will be produced and shipped out. Then he took the time to put my name & address in the computer (which wasn't easy since it's all in Dutch) and promised me I'd receive replacement discs IF they're being produced.

This may seem like a long shot, but PLEASE everybody : START CALLING THEM !!! DON'T GIVE UP !!! What have you got to lose ? The cost of a phone-call ? If you're in their computer you WILL receive those replacements should they be made. It happened to me before (6 years ago) with some errors on the Dinosaur DVD, and after several phone-calls I did get a replacement for that one too.

TTFN !

Secrets of Life

Post by wg4ever »

After 3 attempts, I have successfully found a copy of Volume 4 that has the correct aspect ratio for Secrets of Life! I bought mine at Costco in the Bay Area. I just kept returning it and buying another one until I got a good one. I suggest trying the same thing I did before all the good copies disappear, because I have a feeling Disney won't fix this problem unless it is re-released in a cheap set in the distant future.
Also, I called Disney about Volume 1, and they told me the same thing. "Give me your number and we'll let you know what we decide to do about the problem"

Has Disney already confirmed that they absolutely won't replace the 4th volume with the corrected aspect ratio? It seems like a lot of trouble to keep buying and returning with no guarantee of getting the propper aspect ratio.

The certainly should be willing to replace the disc... after all, they'd send you a replacement if the disc were damaged/scratched. If nothing else, you should at least be able to get them to do a replacement by telling them the disc won't play properly (which is true, from a certain point of view). The only catch then is finding out whether Disney's replacement stock are discs with the correct aspect ratio or not.
