I understand that the Platinum Series has been expanded by 4, including Sleeping Beauty...but the coverart for Sleeping Beauty only says Special Edition. Are there going to be 2 releases or is coverart changing, or...?
Also, are they actually going to rerelease Fantasia, after they had that nice box set!?!
Finally, why not put effort toward a great film like Hunchback of Notre Dame...?

You bring up all good points! Well, I assume that they will release a Platinum Sleeping Beauty at the end of the line-up in 2007 or so, since the most current update of boxard say's it's still a Special Edition that is coming out this September.
And yes, they are really going to release yet another version of Fantasia. My logic to this is one of two things. Either to hype for the upcoming release of Fantasia 2006 (meaning the Platinum version would be released towards the end also), and/or to include the newly completed short, Destino -- which Roy just finished and presented and promised a release of it on a DVD with commentary!

This is my first post here, but I've already been visiting this forum since some time ago.
Well, I think it's very nice that Disney has added 4 new titles to the Platinum edition, even if some of them have already been released as special editions - and that includes "Fantasia". Yeah, I know "Fantasia Anthology" is a terrific edition, but a film with such an extensive legacy as "Fantasia" may very well be released again, with a lot of new bonus material.
Some of the things I'd like to see on the future Platinum edition of "Fantasia":
-The Uncensored roadshow edition (with the "Pastoral" famous scenes and everything)
-A newly restored print (I know the film has already been restored in the 90s, but it woUld be nice to restore it again, now to the level of "Snow White").
-The "Destino" animated-short with an audio comentary by Roy Disney and the director (maybe the short will end up in "Fantasia 2006" anyway).
-They could re-design the galleries and make them easier to navigate (the galleries on the current DVD are very tiresome to navigate - you can't go from fullscreen image to fullscreen image. You have to go to the menu and select the one you'd like to see next).
-They could include the 1982 version of the film, wich had an all-new track, recorded by famous conductor Irwin Kostal.
-I know most of the Deems Taylor dialog has been lost, but they could make a special track with the remaining material.
-Hmm, what about the trailers from each decade, just like the "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" DVD?
As you see, the possibilities for the future DVD are tremendous! I just hope Disney is disposed to combine some new (valuable) material to make fans happy (with they release the real uncut version, it would already be a great thing).

Yeah, I agree on how odd it is to re-release SB and Fantasia as platinums, but like Joe said (welcome, Joe!), an unedited version of Fantasia along with better galleries (with commentary since this IS platinum) would be really nice. The only improvement I can see with SB: SE is an audio commentary and better coverart.
As for Hunchback, I have a strong hunch (woah, definitely no pun intended) that it'll become a 2-disc SE like Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, Pocahontas, and Lilo and Stitch.

Well, the only thing I really missed from the 'Sleeping Beauty' DVD is the audio comentary track and the "Helen Stanley on the Mickey Mouse Club" special (as far as I know, it was on the deluxe laserdisc). Hopefully, we'll get those on the future Platinum Edition.
I don't intend buying the current "Special Edition" of SB, because I already have the UK collector's edition, and the Brazilian edition. And I'm just going to buy the Platinum version if it is really worth it.

I don't think we'll ever see a complete unedited Fantasia released. Like the Three Little Pigs short, the alteration was done at Walt's instructions to according to Disney logic the version they did release was the official Walt Disney version.
Some may disagree with this logic - I personally despise all 'revisionist' filmmaking, but that's how it is for the forseeable future.
However I wouldn't rule out seeing the uncensored bits included as part of an "all-new" documentary explaining what was edited and why - but given Disney's US "Song of the South" position, this is somewhat unlikely.

I think Sleeping Beauty in the US will be rebranded Platinum sometime before the end of the current schedule (2007?) but I doubt it will have any extra content over the current upcoming R1 release.
If they were planning on doing that, they could just release a single disc version now - and release the 2 disc Platinum Edition later. They could import some of the supplements from the 2 disc edition onto the single disc release to justify the "Special Edition" label - Disney has released single disc "Special Editions" in the past after all...

As nice as it would be to see the stuff cut from "The Pastrol Symphonie" in the Platinum edition of Fantasia I don't think we ever will. The cuts were made for the 1967/8 re-release thats the year Walt died so I don't doubt he knew what they were doing and agreed with it.
In the late 60's a lot of stereotypes of black people were being cut fron classic cartoons (Mammy Two Shoes in Tom and Jerry, Warner Bros infamous "Censored 11") they were just changing with the times.

The cuts were made in 1969, but I don't know if Walt aproved at all! I also doubt we'll see this scenes back in the film someday in the future - what is a real shame.
Anyway, I can find three of the four delete scenes on www.widescreen.com. Just go to the Multimedia seccion, and there they are!

I would have to say that I would be in the group that would love to see "Hunchback" rereleased as a special edition of some sort, be it a Platinum Collection or whatever. I believe this is one of Disney's most underrated classics in recent memory and I think it should get the priority treatment it deserves.

They also labeled "Beauty and the Beast" as a special edition. It just means some footage was *gags* added into the film.

Mind you, I am likely to buy another version of Fantasia. It is one of my all time faves, and if the extras are something to take home, then it will be a nice addition to the shelf.

Can you guys elaborate on what those 4 added titles are, other than Sleeping Beauty, Pinnochio & Fantasia? What's the fourth?
Also, I don't see why Disney would bother re-releasing SB as a Platinum when they have the 2-disc SE coming out this fall. The content would be exactly the same and if it generates good sales, why would they bother changing it? It doesn't make sense...

Funny how Special Edition is used both for added footage (BATB, TLK) and for another classification (Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan).
