I find it really odd, too. I checked. The last scenes are letterboxed widescreen. I am absolutely certain about that. Can't take screencaps, sorry.ichabod wrote:Well are you pretty sure or are you certain? Would you mind checking? Perhaps you could take screencaps? I find it very odd that your DVD would have a widescreen version of the last reel when mine if full frame!

I too can confirm that the last few minutes of Secrets of Life are indeed in letterboxed widescreen. There's even a title card before the film that explains it: ""Secrets of Life" is presented here as it was intended to be screened in its original theatrical release. The last reel of the film will transition from full-frame to letterbox which will represent the original widescreen (Cinemascope)."ichabod wrote:Well are you pretty sure or are you certain? I thought that it might have something to do with the DVD-player's setup, but I've tested all three settings: Wide, Pan&Scan, and Letterbox. The letterboxed section of the film plays fine no matter the setting.

Well not on my copy it isn't. It's not letterboxed widescreen it's definitely pan and scan and there's no title card warning that of a transition either. Looks like my copy's going back for a replacement!

Ok, I watch my Region 1 DVDs on a computer so I thought that maybe that could be the reason - but it seems not.ichabod wrote:Ordinary DVD player.
So it must be something that they started out doing wrong, then corrected and anyhow let out the wrongly pressed discs to be sold.
After that some correct pressings and then wrongly done ones again!
Incredible - this editions and their problems really begins to make me furious.

I've bought mine from Amazon.com (I'm in Europe) and my version is also pan & scan, and without titlecard.
My disc was pressed on 30-10-2006.
Do you guys think it is possible getting a replacement from Disney? How should I do that? Being in Europe makes it more complicated, maybe.
I also started wondering...
As there are two different versions of "Secrets of Life" out there, would it be possible that there might be people who have a disc with the correct-color presentation of "Prowlers of the Everglades"?

OK, guys.... Let's try to piece together the data for this Secrets of Life widescreen/pan-and-scan issue (like we did for the Prowlers red/blue color problem)... perhaps we can come up with some sort of pattern that we can better report to Disney when we call.
I just finished watching my copy of Secrets of Life and can report that is was fully pan-and-scan with no front title card explaining how the film would playback.
Could someone actually post the timestamp on when the movie jumps to the letterbox look? That would be helpful for most of us to determining the issue.
Additionally, post the dates on your disc so we can compare (if you haven't done so already). Perhaps we can establish a better date range on these.
My disc was stamped 10/24/2006 3:50:19 AM
Who would have thought we'd need to do this much 'proofing' on these releases?

Looking at the timestamp dates so far, we've got the following datapoints:
10/16/2006 - Widescreen
10/24/2006 - Pan-and-Scan
10/26/2006 - Pan-and-Scan
10/28/2006 - Pan-and-Scan
10/30/2006 - Pan-and-Scan
So far, it's looking like the older pressing got it correct, with newer pressings being incorrect.
Would someone who has a correct widescreen pressing be willing to post a screen capture of the notation at the front of the film that explains how the aspect ratio will change (and note the time when that occurs).
Thanks!

According to a post at Home Theater Forum Disney will offer replacemenet discs for volume 1 Disc 1 (The Prowlers of the Everglades problem) but the new discs will take 6-8 weeks to be done. Would anyone here like to recall Disney and confirm this?
Incidentally Anders would it be possible to post some of the next screencaps in the sequence that are completely cinemascope, then if someone with a pan and scan copy could do likewise for the same shots we coulls get a comparison.

The whole lemming hoax thing is *way* overblown. I just watched the film tonight, and all they really say is exactly what does happen in reality... occasionally during high populations, they migrate, and some die from falls, crossing rivers, lakes, perhaps the ocean.PixarFan2006 wrote:I was kind of disappointed by the whole lemming hoax though. It ruins the purpose of "True Life Adventures".
Yes, they use the word suicide, but in the same manner as "Walking in that neighbourhood after dark is suicide". IE, a fatal mistake.
Like most urban legends, this has grown by what ordinary folks say and pass on, not what the originator said.
Just checked my Secrets of Life, it's widescreen, same October 16th date.
