Disney's Recent DVD Packaging

I don't know about you guys (and girls, of course !) but some of Disney's recent dvd cases have really gotten to me. For me, I think, it started with The Incredibles. If you think, you'll know what I'm talking about. Those retarded little clips on the sides of the dvd cases. Most of the time, I can't remember that the clips are there and I spend at least a minute trying to get the darn case open, only to have a sudden lightning strike of realization that I'm a complete moron that didn't remember the tiny, useless clips on the dvd case. Why are these clips there in the first case ? They serve no purpose. I've been collecting dvds since April 4th, 2000. (I remember the date exactly for two reasons. One, I'm a bit OCD and two, that was the day I got my first dvd player. The very first dvd that I got...I had to get something to watch on my new player...was the director's cut of Highlander.) And in that almost seven years, I have never had a dvd case that wouldn't stay closed. There's no reason for the little clips. They only make you feel like an idiot after trying and trying to get the case open and not realizing why you can't. What about Disney's recent dvd cases make you angry ? It has to be the clips, right ?

Yeah. I despise the clips too. The first time I noticed the clips was when I bought "Madagascar" and I tried to force it open...then I realized "OH IT HAS SOME STUPID CLIPS TO OPEN!!!!"

I think their purpose is too keep small children from opening them and scratching the disc's...otherwise there nothing but a small annoyance.

Its okay...I remember the day I bought my first dvd player too...November 20th 2001...only because "Tomb Raider" was first released on DVD and I NEEDED to own it lol. But im glad I bought a DVD player..cause its like a gazillion times better then a VCR.

Other then "the clips" I don't really have a problem with Disney DVD cases...

Supposedly the clips are there as some sort of security feature. I guess they are there to let you know that your getting a pristine, new copy when buying your new DVDs (of course, I always thought those security stickers with the glue that seems stronger than super glue took care of that problem!)

That being said, you do know that you can break off/twist off the clips if they bother you too much. Then the DVD case opens and closes like any other. And Disney isn't the only studio using the clip cases: Universal, to name at least one other studio, is using them as well.

It's a security feature that I quite enjoy, actually.

Anyone can pull a DVD off the shelf, take an X-acto knife or some other small blade, slide it along the line on the side where you open the case, pull out the disc, and put it on the shelf, and it's hardly noticeable unless you pick it up and feel it.

With the security tab on the sides now, it's an extra chore to open when on the case, but it helps prevent people from slicing the case open like that and pulling out the DVD.

You can "twist" them off. In fact, I believe the Paramount side-security sticker tells you to do so. It used to, if not now.

I've always twisted those suckers off, because damnit, they ARE annoying.

I've noticed Disney isn't very consistent with those, as well. In the last few years, some of the DVDs I've bought have them, and some don't.

I live in Canada and those little clips have only appeared on a handfull of my collection, all of which have been Paramount titles that have been released in the past year and a half (I think Sahara was the first), except for my copy of the M:I:III CE. I think King Kong is the only non- Paramount title to have that style of casing. So, to put it simple, I've only got a few cases with those stupid clips, and none have been Disney.

As much as I dislike them, I could never twist them off cause then I would know theyre broken.

We have never had those stupid cases here. Thank god! (I live in Finland).
My only R1-Disc with those clips is Cinderella and when I opened that case for the first time I too wondered the meaning of those clips. Great that here the distributors are clever enough to left those things aside.

I think it varies. My copy of The Incredibles didn't have those stupid clips, yet my copy of Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest did. Actually with my 50th anniversary Muppet DVDs it varies, one of them has the clips, the others don't.

Either way, I don't like them, yet I don't want to break them just for the sake of not breaking them

Every tried it? It's absolutely *not* something anyone can do easily and unnoticeably.

You have to slice through the outer shrinkwrap not just on the side, but on the top as well since you have to slice through the inner sticky seal that's always on the top edge, not just on the side. Then you have to be able to open it wide enough to be able to reach in and release the dvd from the hub before yanking it out through the opening.

Doing that is going to leave you with pretty much an outer shrinkwrap that's just hanging off the package like a dress hangs off Kate Moss. You'd have to be *really* inattentive to not notice that.

Have folks received dvds that were missing the disks? Of course they have. But I bet almost all of them were factory error, or re-shrinkwrapping done on returned merchandise where they didn't check the contents.

No DVD I own has the clips on them. One I used to own did (wasn't a Disney film though), was part of the reason it ended up in the "trade in at Blockbuster box".

I guess Disney doesn't see a need for the clips on the DVDs they sell in Canada.
