Return of the King

Post by Jack »

Well, the last chapter is finally here, so post your reviews!

I just saw it yesterday afternoon (couldn't make the midnight premiere :( ). Now when I saw Fellowship of the Ring, I was blown away - it was much more than I expected emotionaly and actionw-wise. When I saw The Two Towers, I was underwhelmed - the pacing was pretty muddy, and it wasn't as emotional as the first one, although it had bigger action sequences.

Now, I went into the Return of the King with out any expectations. I'm a big LOTR fan, and didn't want to be dissapointed again, so I stayed away from reviews and hype.

I'm glad to say that Return of the King is a perfect closing to the trilogy, and is a good mixture of the first two, combining emotion and action very well. No, I didn't cry like I've heard the entire cast and crew promise repeatedly (I cried in FOTR though), but it did work me up emotionally - particularly dealing with Sam's character, who has always been my favorite. Pretty much any time he was on screen, there was a very moving or heartwrenching moment. I'd love to go into why I was so moved by those scenes, but I want to keep this spoiler-free. The "many different endings" at the end of the movie, I think, is realy being over-criticized. Yes, the conclusion after the battle does go on for a while, but it's not exhausting as some of the critics would have you think.

Anyway, I'd say this film and the first are on par, and TTT is underneath both (my friend insists TTT was the best, but I have no idea why he thinks that).

My friends backed out on me as well for the midnight show, but I saw it at noon yesterday I thought the movie was, in a word.......INCREDIBLE!!!!!

It was absolutely fantastic! It was full of action and emotion. I didn't cry, but I'll admit that several times I got choked up and my eyes got a little damp. The film was definitely my favorite of the three, but I try to think of the trilogy as a collective whole, just like the books as one novel. I would like to see it at least two more times. I encourage evreyone to see it. If you've never seen any of them, it's worth it to sit through the first two (which are also classic) just to see The Return of the King. No movie I've seen in a VERY long time had such a good ending (which is 10-20 min long, but definitely not exhausting). On a scale of 1 to 10, it gets a twelve. :D

Now THERE'S a great movie. I was very, very happy with it. My favorite out of the three, actually, though I might have to see the first two again now! The pacing was good, the action was amazing, and all of my favorite characters (Eowyn, Gollum, Merry, Pippin) had plenty of screen time. Seventeen stars and a huzzah for everyone involved! ***************** :D

Great Movie!!!! saw the extended editions of the first 2 right before seeing this, I found out all too late that the senator, apparantly a big theatre in Baltimore was playing all three back to back, but i did not get to do that :( , but i still have a big tv so it was ok, the only thing that got to me was the ending, cause they kept making it seem like it was over and then there was more, and don't get me wrong I love more, but the way it was done it seemed to drag on a bit, but I'm sure i won't mind it the next time i see it, the one part that got me choked up, was when ... don't read on if you don't want spoilers...

The Hobbits were bowing to Aragon, and he said, "My friends, you bow to noone." And he bowed to them and everyone else followed...

GREAT GREAT Movie, I kinda held Jack's opion of the second one the first time I saw it but since then and since seeiong the extened version I do not, and I do think of them as one whole movie anyone, but before i just didn't appreciate the middle part of the story, as much as the first but now I like all three parts eaqually, cause they really are just that, not parts of a trilogy but parts of a movie, and once you've seen all three you see that, and they are absolutley wonderful, they're like this generation's Star Wars, only BETTER!!! :P

I saw " The Lord of the Rings" on December 20 at 2:30 p.m.
IT was 3 hours and 15 minutes long.
This is the best movie from the triology.
It's a must see at least 2 times.
I can't wait to get it on DVD and VHS next year.
I just have on word to express this movie
"Amazing"

I don't want to spoil the movie so just watch it
you won't regret it.

O.K., spoilers ahead, but this was the part of the film that choked me up the most:

When Gollum convinces Frodo that Sam is trying to take the ring for himself, and then frames Sam for dropping the bread. Sam's such a good friend, and then to see Frodo be convinced and say "It is you Sam - go home" REALLY made me very emotional. I love that scene because it makes me feel strongly about each character - sorry for Sam, pity for Frodo, and anger at Gollum.

Saw it last night for the second time, probably going for a third tomorrow or the next day. It's definitely the best film of the year in my book, and I think Oscars are deserved for Billy Boyd for the supporting role of Peregrin "Pippin" Took and Sean Astin for the LEADING role of Samwise Gamgee. Sam really was the most important character in the movie and it was definitely one of those roles where, years from now, you'll still know that nobody could have done it but Sean Astin. I couldn't keep the tears in this time, but I did do exceptionally well at keeping most of them in, but it was very hard. Several grown men near me were sobbing. The film is probably the most emotional one I've ever seen, and my sister, who is also a HUGE movie fan, saw it for the first time last night and said it was the best movie she had seen in her entire life. :D

i saw the movie and Peter Jackson was right. the best movie was saved for last. i liked the part in the beginning about how Smeagol got the ring and became Gollum. i hope that Academy is kind enough to give Andy Serkis a nomination for Best Supporting Actor since he was almost nominated for the Two Towers but the Academy turned down the idea about nominating someone whose face wasnt shown in the movie.

Saw it on Tuesday and loved it.
But I guess I'm in the drastic minority when I say that I probably enjoyed The Two Towers a tad bit more. There was so much more build-up and anticipation in TTT than in Return of the King, especially where the battles are concerned.

I'll post additional thoughts later.

I don't think you are in that much of a minority. I have to say ROTK blew me away, but I have a fondness for TTT that surpasses that for ROTK. Mind you, I felt the same way coming out of TTT - I wasn't sure whether I liked FOTR more. I think I realise now that I am one of those people who anticipates something to the point where nothing could possibly live up to what I think it will be.

But now, at the end of the trilogy, I think I can safely say they are a series that I can watch over and over. I think my favourite one will change depending on mood, but certainly - the 3+ hours of ROTK seemed to fly by for me...
