Lack of PM

Post by myr_heille »

Hello!
I would like to say that I find the impossibility to send PMs to other members very annoying. I know that it's for save-bandwidth measures but some members do not have their email visible in their profile which makes it very hard to contact them. I for example would like to PM/email some members about their trading business (thatartguy and brotherbear, I'm looking at you! ;) Please email me if you see this.) and I don't want to start a thread just for that since it's personal.

Anyway. Just a rant. ;) I guess a thread "I seek your attention, memberX, would you please email me?" could be useful although maybe not checked often. I don't see any other solutions, just maybe restricting the PMs (something like you can just send one PM to each member.. with your email adress in it :P)?

I hope you will find a way to make contact between members easier! Thanks a lot!

PM aren't a privilege you'll find at every forum. I was glad to be able to make them available here for several years, but as is probably inevitable, people abused them - spammers solicited through them, you had people sending out dozens a day regarding Survivor alliances, personal attacks found a home. Limiting the number of PMs you could have didn't change it.

As a rule of thumb, if you want your fellow UD forum member to be able to contact you, then don't choose to hide your e-mail address. Otherwise, if you're looking to contact someone hiding the e-mail address... replying to the message that inspired you to want to PM to the effect that you would like to contact the member personally is your best bet. I'm fairly confident that revealing your e-mail address won't increase the volume of spam you receive and with a good spam filter, the nuisance has seemed to lessen in recent years anyway.

Sorry for the inconvenience. Only way I can see restoring PM access for post-June '06 forum sign-ups is via some kind of donation system. That way there'd be some responsibility to it and it could cover bandwidth costs that arise.

Thanks for the quick reply Luke. I understand the reasons (I didn't think the problem with PMs was more than just bandwidth). I think the donation system isn't a bad idea, I'm just not so sure it would work since that for PMs to be efficient most people need to have them. I guess I'll reply to the thread asking for specific contact like you suggested :)

Keep on the great job on the website Luke!

Well, don't forget that the majority of members (those around since before this past summer) still have their PM privileges. A benefit of their seniority, I guess.
