Golden Globe Nominations
Finding Nemo picked up a Golden Globe nomination for the best picture, Jamie Lee Curtis got a one for Best Actress in Freaky Friday, and Johnny Depp received a mention for Best Actor in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. All are obviously nominated in the musical or comedy categories.
The bad news it that the nods are up against nominations for Lost in Translation, which I expect to kick butt at the awards ceremony. I don't think it will be an easy win for either even if luck does shine in their corners.
I'm still waiting for a full list of nominations to become available online, but here are a couple of news articles already mentioning the nominations:
- 'Cold Mountain' Tops List of Golden Globe Nominees
- Depp, Jack Black Get Golden Globe Nods

Alright, Nemo! I'd like it to win Best Picture, and "Translation" can get a Best Actor for Murray. I wouldn't feel right with "Translation" winning Best Picture (Comedy/Musical), either, because it's more of a "Comedy" than "Ghost" (which was nominated for that category in 1990, actually), but still not a real full-out comedy. As long as either one of those wins, I'll be glad though. Go, Nemo! Go Bill!

Finding Nemo deserves its nomination, but I'm totally rooting for Lost in Translation. All the way to Oscar, judging by its performance today...and all week long, at various critical circles.
I was disappointed Nemo didn't make it for score. But the Globes always have one or two "from nowhere" choices for score. This year it's Girl With a Pearl Earring. But I loved Nemo's score. Actually, I think I liked the score more than I liked the film. lol.
And I think the Animated Feature field will end up as Finding Nemo, Brother Bear, and The Triplets of Belleville, which would be just...perfect, to me, from what's to choose from. Brother Bear's chance of a song nom at the Oscars was killed by its absence here, but I blame Disney for that. Why they pushed Great Spirits and No Way Out over Look Through My Eyes and On My Way, I'll never know...but I just want Brother Bear to get nominated for Animated Feature.
And I don't think Nemo should become complacent. Triplets has won several critical awards, too. I still think Nemo will win, but...
I think Mystic River will be too dark to win. One could argue many of the other nominees are dark, but not as dark as Mystic River, or not as hard-core. I think it will be more admired than loved...
So I think Cold Mountain is ROTK's biggest rival...both here, and at Oscar. And I do not believe that ROTK has to win picture here, at the Globes, in order to do so at the Academy Awards. In fact, I'm sure the Academy will give it a lot more love...tham the Hollywood Foreign Press.
Though the Oscars have more categories than the Globes, here's how the trilogy has stacked up, in terms of noms/wins...
The Fellowship of the Ring
Golden Globes - 4 nods, 0 wins
Academy Awards - 13 nods, 4 wins
The Two Towers
Golden Globes - 2 nods, 0 wins
Academy Awards - 6 nods, 2 wins
Anyway, I still think ROTK can and will pull off the BP win this year. I hope it does. I think Cold Mountain is more likely to win at the Globes, maybe (as they seem to love Miramax). I'll probably like Cold Mountain when I see it, but there's no way...it should end up prevailing over the crowning installment of the LOTR trilogy (which I saw last night, and it was great). In my opinion...

Meega na la queesta.
static & silence and a monochrome vision
static & silence and a monochrome vision
I've been saying this for a year now (and I'm a big LOTR fan, too): ROTK won't win Best Picture. The Acadamy's bias against fantasy isn't going to fall just because the general public feels the LOTR movies are great. I guarantee you they'll pic a straight "real life drama" for Best Pic.
If I'm wrong, I'll gladly eat crow pie.

I've only seen the trailer, but when it comes to the Oscars I'm sure Tim Burton's Big Fish deserves best picture. Take that all you Lord of the Rings supporters!
As for the Golden Globes why's Burton not up for Best Director? Those magical effects and designs aren't created in a vaccuum away from the director. And see how charismatic and animated and simply alive Ewen McGregor is compared to his stilted performance in the new Star Wars films. Like his Moulin Rouge! performance you can tell he actually likes the material, the filming and the director.
This seems like a debarcle just as bad as not nominating Baz Luhrmann for Moulin Rouge! in the 2002 Oscars. (Again, apparently the stunning Moulin Rouge! was created in a vaccuum away from the director. And to add insult to injury that's when Ron Howard won Best Director for his worst Picture ever - A Beautiful Mind
)
So "Go Timmy"!

I can't believe the scores for "Finding Nemo" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" weren't nominated. The music from those films is constantly going through my head. Espicially the song from "Nemo" that is played when the title first appears on screen. I hope the score from "Nemo" is nominated for an Oscar. By the way, when do Oscar nominations get announced?
I agree with you on that. Pirates' score immediately struck me as being great, but Nemo's took a while to grow on me and now its stuck in my head too.goofystitch wrote:I can't believe the scores for "Finding Nemo" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" weren't nominated.
