Non-Disney, Hand-Drawn Animated Films
Yeah, I remember back in the day when Nickelodeon use to play them ALL the time. Along with Rikki Tikki Tavi, Mowgli's Brothers, and The White Seal. I miss the old Nick channel...ditto that on Disney Channel. Back when they use to play GOOD movies and tv showsRyougaLolakie wrote:You've seen both of those films?Siren wrote: The Phantom Tollbooth

I thought I was the only one who loved both of those films. But now, I'm happy that you enjoyed both of them. Both of those films are really good!

I didn't even knew they aired "The Phantom Tollbooth" on the old Nickolodeon. If I remember correctly, they used to air that one on Cartoon Network back in the year of 1996 or 1997. Thank god my mother's friend taped it for me back in 2001 when it was shown in HBO Family. Now I have to wait untill Christmas for a DVD recorder and then converted to a DVD.Siren wrote:Yeah, I remember back in the day when Nickelodeon use to play them ALL the time. The Phantom Tollbooth, in my opinion, was the best animated film that Chuck Jones ever did while he's at the MGM years. Along with Tom and Jerry shorts, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Horton Hears A Who!, and The Dot and the Line, this film was without doubt was almost as good as the book version. Butch Patrick, who did the character of "Herman" from The Munsters, did a very good job for acting as Milo. Daws Butler, Mel Blanc, June Forray, and other voice actors did a very good job at it too.
I remember renting "The White Seal" from Movie Gallery and it was marvelous. Chuck Jones did a very good job on the Rudyard Kipling shorts as well as "The Cricket In Time Square" short and 2 specials from that short.
As for "The Elm-Chanted Forest", it was one of my family's favorites. When I was young, I adored this film more than anything else. My mother's friend also taped that one back in the old Disney Channel back in the year of 1995 along with the claymation halloween special.
And yet, I missed the good old days.

My favourite piece of non-Disney animation (2D or otherwise) is very easily Raymond Briggs' the Snowman, which is standard Christmas viewing here in the UK. At only 20 minutes, it doesn't qualify as feature-lengthed, but I couldn't resist mentioning it, all the same.
My favourite non-Disney 2D feature would have to be Spirited Away (ignoring Disney's involvement in the English language dub, that is).
Also great are:
Watership Down
The Iron Giant
Yellow Submarine
Howl's Moving Castle
Kiki's Delivery Service
When the Wind Blows (the only Raymond Briggs feature animation that I know of)
I do have certain soft spots for Ferngully: the Last Rainforest, Anastasia and Balto. And the Care Bears Movie, given how much I loved it as an infant.

Oh, I just remembered...the Dot movies.
Dot and the Kangaroo and Dot and the Whale were especially my favorites. But she had nearly a dozen movies. I remember Dot and the Kangaroo starting out with a live action actress playing Dot, and then she is gifted with the language of animals and it turns into animation...though backgrounds were often real photographs. Dot and the Whale was SOOO sad. About a whale who's entire family is killed by whalers, she tries to commit suicide by beaching herself and ultimatly decides she'd rather live in a Sea World-like park, then back in the ocean.

There are quite many non-Disney animated films that I like (many of which have already been mentioned in this thread), but the one I've always liked the most is The Land Before Time.
The film has a wonderful story with interesting characters, and the animation is nice as well. The voice actors do a good job (in both Finnish and English), and the score composed by James Horner is just breathtaking: the score has many themes and beautiful orchestral and choral moments (just think of the heartbreaking "Whispering Winds" track) as well as fascinating cues of awe and terror. The title song works too, and all of these elements together create a fascinating film.

I almost included this one myself. However, I'm not sure I would say it's a "favorite" because it has aspects I could have done without or that could have been better, but it's great. It's available now in 2 disc or single disc DVDs. I want that 2-disc but still haven't had a chance to get it.DEREKG wrote:

My favorite 2-D animated non-Disney movies are as follows:
G.I. Joe the Movie
Transformers the Movie - it made me cry when Optimus Prime died
The Secret of Nimh
An American Tale - This was my second date movie ever, right after The Black Cauldron, and probably explains why these are two of my favorite movies.
All of the Studio Ghibli movies are exceptional with The Cat Returns being my favorite.

Grave of the Fireflies. Very dark Japanese anime film. It's made by Studio Ghibli. Takes place during the end of WW II in Japan. None of my anime-loving friends will watch it with me! If I'm able to find a copy at anime expo this year, I am so going to buy it.
Dragon, not lizard. I don't do that tongue thing.
