I do agree that its overrated, but Disney does change a lot of stories. Even though some of the storys are changed I still like them because I watch them for the movies story and not pay attention to how the original or true story goes. I do however still like the original story of The Little Mermaid, but I cant imagine Ariel being put into a situation where she has to kill Prince Eric and then jump off a ship and commit suicide because she couldnt kill him, yeah that would be odd and very sad.
I LOVE TLM the way it is but I think it could have been very beautiful with a sad ending... Kinda like a Romeo & Juliet

Lion King, because ...

Post by banjoboy »

The Lion King is probably the most overrated, not because it's the worst movie but because corporate hype and public opinion built it up as something it's not. It's a pretty decent picture, but a timeless classic it's not.

I have no idea why the Lion King is considered such an earth-shattering film. I guess it's just because it did so well at the box office. I certainly don't think it's the best thing I've ever seen. I like it, I watch it all the time, but it's not as special to me as say, Beauty and the Beast. Yet, I've seen people talk about the Lion King and they get all dramatic like "OMG" and they clutch at their hearts, overcome at the mere mention of that flick. I don't get it.

Another overrated film I think is Lilo and Stitch. Why oh why is everyone so in love with that alien? :o What is that everyone finds so appealing about him? I for one think he's obnoxious. :?

Because he's fluffy!

You haven't seen obnoxious Stitch until you witness the tragedy that is Stitch's Great Escape.

i hate to say this, because it's my best friend's favorite movie (and he's on this forum and will no doubt see this) but it might be cinderella. its a great movie and i like it a lot, but it just wasn't as amazing as i had expected it to be. maybe it was his fault because he hyped it so much, but... i dont know.

also, although it is one of my personal favorites, the lion king is waaaaay overhyped. it was amazing and very sad (i cried when mufasa died as im sure everyone did) but it was definitely not the best disney movie ever. one of the top ones, but not the best.

one movie that i feel is UNDERhyped-- lady and the tramp. that movie is so magical and beautiful and i love it with all my heart and people are always like 'oh. that movie. yeah it was good.' and i get upset.

Well, I don't think fluffiness a character popular makes. As for Stitch's Great Escape, remind never to visit that place next time I go to Disney World. They should at least have that "interactive" version at Hong Kong Disneyland.

That's right.... Disney shut down ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter and turned it into a more kid-friendly ride... Such a shame... >_>

The nerve of those people. For shame. Mind you, I never really cared for Alien Encounter, either, but my sister did. During the fall of 2003, she was working at WDW through their College Program. She managed to catch the VERY LAST showing of that attraction! Lucky her.

I'm going to jump on the Lion King bandwagon. It's a good film, to be sure, but I never got why it did so well. It makes me feel sadder for the unappreciated movies like The Rescuers...which I adore. Yeah.[/b]

Yeah, I do have to agree... I watched The Rescuers again for the first time since it was reissued in theaters back in the 80s and remembered just how much I loved it. I really hope they reissue that DVD with some actual bonus materials because I'd love to learn more about its making. In fact, I read on Wikipedia that The Rescuers was actually quite successful. I would think they would give it a nice rerelease at some point... (2-disc Rescuers Masterpiece Edition... *crosses fingers*)

Now, 2 movies that tanked...
Atlantis and Treasure Planet...
I thought Atlantis was okay, but I actually enjoyed Treasure Planet a lot more. Too bad they did so poorly. >_>

Hmm, I personally think that The Lion King is an absolutely brilliant movie... could watch it many many times. Still get chills from that one.

Lilo & Stitch was, to me, ordinary, as was Chicken Little (but i don't like the weird alien thing so it could just be me).

Well, I don't care for Lilo and Stitch, either. So I guess that makes two of us. However, I actually thought Chicken Little wasn't too bad. I think it had kind of felt like "Emperor's New Groove", another movie I thought was very hilarious.

Technically, every single Disney movie I've ever seen has been overrated. Except Dumbo, The Jungle Book, the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and Sleeping Beauty - that is a movie that hasn't lost an inch of it's magic or perfection. That will always be in my estimation, Disney's greatest animated film. Oh, and Alice in Wonderland, The Black Cauldron, and Fun and Fancy Free. They're outstanding movies that most people Underrate. Either because it's too unique (Alice) or it's one of the most underseen Disney movies (FFF and BlackC). Oh, and Pocahontas. Since there is this huge (and unnecessary) backlash campaign against the film, it can't be overrated.

But every one of Disney's other films I can think of is at least a little overrated. Even the ones I love, like Aladdin, Great Mouse Detective,

As far as most overrated goes, I'd have to say - The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Bambi, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 101 Dalmatians (animated), Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Tarzan.

I don't really know about overrated films, since I like most of them.
But, the most UNDERRATED movie(in my OWN opinion) would have to be "Pocahontas."
I REALLY love that movie. It is one of the most beautiful films of all time.

I really wish they would have put it in as a PE, but I am for certain happy with my 2-disc SE.[/b]

After viewing Cars recently I would have to say it was overhyped and rather hard to sit through the first time.....and the second time. I've also become rather tired of seeing Mater's Tractor-tipping scene  which wasn't really funny to me to begin with.

Here's hoping I don't get yoinked for posting on an old thread.

To me, overrated simply means a movie that I'm not too fond of and that is way too hyped up (like Shrek..which I know isn't Disney so I won't go there).

Too Overrated for me:
- Peter Pan (seeing Tinker Bell on everything got old a long time ago, and I still see her everywhere.. like on 50% of the t-shirts at walmart.. that and it doesn't help when you have three other versions of the story running around PLUS a freaking story about the creation of the play.. yes feel my love  )
- Cinderella (it must be because of the castle, I guess).
- The Nightmare Before Christmas (which has been highly popularized recently by fashionwear, buttons, keychains, etc. Most of which look kinda emo-ish.. not sure what to make of it).
- The Emperor's New Groove (not too long ago, this used to play on the Disney Channel ALOT, and I couldn't understand why people loved it so much.. but I've only seen it once, maybe I should see it again..)
- Cars (it was just ok for me.. the merchandise still sells like mad O_o)
- Monsters Inc (it was ok).
- Toy Story (I'm sorry but I actually *hate* these movies.. maybe it's because I had siblings who watched them over and over almost everyday).

Overrated But It's All Fine By Me :P
- The Lion King (not as hyped up as it was; was a huge fan of it as a child so I don't mind the hype)
- PotC (and I can proudly say I've become a part of the madness and craziness)
- Lilo and Stitch (honestly, who couldn't love Stitch?)

I always sort of thought that Snow White was never as good as everyone was telling me it was. It's okay, but i don't think it's the best ever or anything. And also I think the seven dwarves are kind of creepy.

Whoah, What? A Bug's Life is like the most underrated Pixar movie ever, It is so overlooked and dosen't seem to get near as much recognition as Pixar's other films do.
