Giraffe

Post by Prince Adam »

Did anyone else hear about the giraffe that was recently struck by lightning in Disney's Animal Kingdom at WDW, FLA? So sad. Not that Disney could help it, but I wonder what kind of negative backlash will come of this...

My wife told me about this tonight.

It's unfortunate and sure there will probably be animal righst activists all over this. But the fact is the African Savannah is just as susceptible to lightning events as Florida...it could have happened in the wild just as easily.

Unless of course said Giraffe was leaning against a metal pole or something.

And I believe it was Ren (or was it Stimpy....) that uttered these immortal words:

Hmmm, well, Disney does put all the animals indoors at night and are well taken care of. But yeah, I am sure PETA or some wacko group will have something to complain about.

I heard the news yesterday afternoon on the radio from CBS News. They had a soundbite with a woman from the Animal Kingdom discussing the death of the giraffe. The lady said that at the Animal Kingdom (as well as at all the Disney parks) there are lighting rods placed all around the park to protect the animals as well as the guests. She also said that they try to get all the animals into their shelters when a storm is approaching, but they weren't able to get them all in, in time. (I suppose if the giraffe didn't really feel like going, I don't think you could carry it indoors.)

The news story ended with a statistic about how many people are killed in Florida by lightning strikes every year. (I don't remember the number however.)

RIP Giraffe

It's a fairly high number, at least higher than most people might think. I know that nationwide more people are killed bu lightning each year than any other weather-related event, including Tornadoes.

I personally don't know of one, though (this is a pure guess) Siren might know.

For a second I was thinking, "Hey, Prince Adam's back!". Then I see the date of the topic.

A word to the wise: Sometimes it's best to actually start a new topic rather than bump up an old one to ask a seemingly-related-but-not-really question. Pretty soon we'll see "Finding Nemo coming to DVD this Fall 2003" be bumped to ask, "Hey, where can I get a slipcover?"
