Sister Act

Post by Rowlf_The_Dog »

Was SISTER ACT originally a Walt Disney Pictures film? If so ... why was it released as a Touchstone picture ...

I can sort of understand why WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT and THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS were ported over to Touchstone ... but why SISTER ACT?

It is one of the few Touchstone flicks that has a very Disney feel ...

Just curious ...

It's always been a Touchstone film, through and through (and one that needs a new DVD with, among other things, anamorphic video and more/better bonus materials).

I never really thought of it as Disney. When it first came out, I really had no concept of studios (they were either live-action films or animated films to me). So Sister Act was just another one of those comedic music films that I enjoyed. Wasn't until I bought the DVD that I found out it was from Touchstone!

Plus, the story is very...not Disney. I mean, it's about a lounge singer having an affair with a guy likely connected to the mob. She witnesses a shooting, goes into hiding as a nun, and ends up drawing attention to herself by turning around the choir and getting the Pope's attention.

If they added a cute little puppy dog for a sidekick, I can see it be branded Disney... ;)

Well I guess when you break it down like that LOL ...

I don't know ... I guess in my mind ... I have always seen the original and it's sequel as family films ... It may not be squeakly clean Disney ... but it has that fun sort of Disney feel ... If you can get what I mean ...

And yes I do agree that the original and it's sequel need a better DVD version ... with some better bonus features ... maybe in the first one including a small featurette on how the film may have been a little different with Bette Midler as the nun in hiding ...

There's also swearing and excessive use of the word s*** in the film. I never thought it felt like a Disney film, but it is a great film and Disney should recognize that it's about time for a decent DVD release. I have yet to upgrade my overplayed VHS, but I would like both films released to good DVD treatments.

As previously stated, there were WDP films released around that time with foul language, including Disney films with excessive saying of "Shit!".

As for Sister Act, I've never seen it, but I mentioned this to my mom and she actually said she thought it was Walt Disney Pictures. So I guess some people think it's family-friendly enough for Disney. :)
