Is there a song you wish you wrote?

Post by DaveWadding »

...well?

Here's mine:

To Make You Feel My Love (Bob Dylan)

When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love

When the evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one there to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love

I know you haven't made your mind up yet
But I would never do you wrong
I've known it from the moment that we met
No doubt in my mind where you belong

I'd go hungry, I'd go black and blue
I'd go crawling down the avenue
There's nothing that I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love

The storms are raging on the rollin' sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothing like me yet

I could make you happy, make your dreams come true
Nothing that I wouldn't do
Go to the ends of the earth for you
To make you feel my love

__________

Just incredible.

Anyone?

"Where's My Mind" The Pixies. It's just a song made out of pure awesomeness. It makes me think of floating restfully in space for all eternity. Oh, and it made the ending to Fight Club absolutely perfect.

"Tainted Love" (originally sung by Gloria Jones, my favorite cover is from Soft Cell)

Sometimes I feel I've got to
Run away I've got to
Get away
From the pain that you drive into the heart of me
The love we share
Seems to go nowhere
And I've lost my light
For I toss and turn I can't sleep at night

Now I know I've got to
Run away I've got to
Get away
You don't really want any more from me
To make things right
You need someone to hold you tight
And you'll think love is to pray
But I'm sorry I don't pray that way

Once I ran to you (I ran)
Now I'll run from you
This tainted love you've given
I give you all a boy could give you
Take my tears and that's not nearly all
Oh...tainted love
Tainted love

Don't touch me please
I cannot stand the way you tease
I love you though you hurt me so
Now I'm going to pack my things and go
Tainted love, tainted love
Tainted love, tainted love
Touch me baby, tainted love
Touch me baby, tainted love
Tainted love
Tainted love
Tainted love
Tainted love

Maybe you're listening to a different recording, but I don't really remember that part of the song.

Also, I wish I wrote every song that doesn't suck. I'll leave that to you to decipher. As for clues, here are songs that do suck:

the entire Backstreet Boys catalog
the entire N'Sync catalog
the entire Britney Spears catalog
the entire Hanson catalog (excluding Mmmbop)
Everything on these lists from 1999 to 2006

But of course, that's a very rough outline of a list.

Pretty much anything by Peter Gabriel I wish I'd written. His lyrics (and music) always resonate with me wonderfully.

And, strange as it may sound, about half the songs in the Animaniacs line-up. Their lyrics are often so cleverly-structured that it makes me salivate. :D

I don't know about songs, but there's some excellent lyrics out there:

Some have a style, that they work hard to refine,
So they walk a crooked line.
But she won't understand, why anyone would have to try
To walk a line when they can fly

(If She Knew What She Wants: The Bangles)

I remember words that fell
Like coins into a wishing well

(I'll Set You Free: The Bangles)

Currently my favourite Lyrics have to be in Six Feet Under by Marion Raven:

Six feet under, under my skin
There's a battle I know I can't win
You invade me and I surrender
That's what I hate about you

Six feet under, under my skin
There is where your story begins
You were wanting, I was forsaken

You came to me with words unspoken
I can't deny it, that I knew my glass would end up broken
(and that's how you got me)
I blame myself for being stupid
But I can't help it, yet I'm eating right out of your hand
And that's what I hate about you

Six feet under, touching my soul
From the moment we met, you were stone
You embraced me, and I believed you

You came to me with words unspoken
I can't deny it, that I knew my glass would end up broken
(and that's how you got me)
I blame myself for being stupid
But I can't help it, yet I'm eating right out of your hand
That's what I hate about you

It's not that hard, just walk away
There's gotta be a different meaning

You came to me with words unspoken
I can't deny it, that I knew my glass would end up broken
(and that's how you got me)
I blame myself for being stupid
But I can't help it, yet I'm eating right out of your hand
(and that's how you got me)
Now's the time for my confession
Cause I can't take it, that you always be and always will be
Under my skin
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

That's very...close minded of you. It's popular, so it sucks?

Damn straight. Here are a few of my favourites:

I really like Purple Sneakers by You Am I (full lyrics can be found here)

"You can shave a million ways
To make damn sure that the twelve in you stays
But do you need somebody, to feel somebody?"

Doesn't that just say it all in three tiny lines?

I also have a soft-spot for these Golden Smog lyrics from Until You Came Along:

Your star-crossed eyes and your troubled mind
seems you were left just for me to find
sweet lady lay your hands in mine
upon my face laid to waste by years of wine

Until I think of some more, I'll leave you with one of my favourite love songs at the moment, Nowhere Without You by the Bob Evans.

I make a miserable D.J. getting drunk, playing records up late
Wearing out a hole in my heart on the couch from when you went away
Today wrote out a prescription leave all calls to the answering machine
I don’t remember anything but I know that you know where I’ve been

CHORUS
Where would I go?
What would I do?
I would be nowhere with out you
Now I know heavens above you I can grow
I just can’t make it on my own

Watching terrible T.V it’s ok all our secrets we keep
I used to dream of broken teeth now I lie awake watching you sleep
If I’m so independent why when you leave am I digging up holes
To hide and wait til you come back like a bad actor between roles

CHORUS

Good morning baby it’s raining outside
But we’ve got all day and the suns in your eyes
Frisky on whisky we’re champagne and wine
Drinking in, sinking in love
Where we’ll go I gloriously don’t know

I’m nowhere without you
(now I know)
Heaven’s above you
(I can grow)

One Great Thing by Big Country
If there’s one great thing to happen in my life
If there’s one great day, if there’s one great height
Let it be the time of peace
Let it be the time of right
If there’s one great thing to happen in my life

I’ve seen too much of what fighting has done
I’ve seen too much anger and I’ve seen it far too young
And talk of much of nothing while the shouting still goes on
But we are only singers until better songs are sung

If there’s one great thing to happen in my life
If there’s one great day, if there’s one great height
Let it be the time of peace
Let it be the time of right
If there’s one great thing to happen in my life

I’ve seen the way of prophets and I’ve seen the way of kings
I’ve seen the hope that love can bring
I only hope what pleases me will also pleasure you
For might can never be the hands that make a dream come true

If there’s one great thing to happen in my life
If there’s one great day, if there’s one great height
Let it be the time of peace
Let it be the time of right
If there’s one great thing to happen in my life

I’ve seen too much of what fighting has done
I’ve see too much anger and I’ve seen it far too young

NOBODY MESSES WITH THE MMMBOP

Ha. Haha. But seriously. There are plenty of good popular songs, I'm just saying that I can't find a single song on those lists (at the top of the Billboard charts from 99 to 06) that I like.

When you're dreaming with a broken heart
The waking up is the hardest part
You roll outta bed and down on your knees
And for a moment you can hardly breathe
Wondering was she really here?
Is she standing in my room?
No she's not
'Cause she's gone, gone, gone, gone, gone....

When you're dreaming with a broken heart
The giving up is the hardest part
She takes you in with your crying eyes
Then all at once you have to say goodbye
Wondering could you stay my love?
Will you wake up by my side?
No she can't
'Cause she's gone, gone, gone, gone, gone....

Now do I have to fall asleep with roses in my hand?
Do I have to fall asleep with roses in my hand?
Do I have to fall asleep with roses in my hand?
Do I have to fall asleep with roses in
my, roses in my hand?
Would you get them if I did?
No you won't
'Cause you're gone, gone, gone, gone, gone....

When you're dreaming with a broken heart
The waking up is the hardest part

You mean that Soft Cell didn't orginally sung it? That's intesting. I never knew that.

Anyhoo, I don't know if I wish I wrote it, but I find the song Moonlight Shadow absouletly beautiful. Especially the lyrics. And I'm not the type of person that pays attention to lyrics that much. I like the DDR version as much as I like the orginal one by Mike Oldfield.

The last that ever she saw him,
Carried away by a moonlight shadow.
He passed on worried and warning,
Carried away by a moonlight shadow.
Lost in a riddle that Saturday night,
Far away on the other side.
He was caught in the middle of a desperate fight
And she couldn't find how to push through.

The trees that whisper in the evening,
Carried away by a moonlight shadow.
Sing a song of sorrow and grieving,
Carried away by a moonlight shadow.
All she saw was a silhouette of a gun,
Far away on the other side.
He was shot six times by a man on the run
And she couldn't find how to push through.

[ Chorus ]

I stay, I pray
See you in heaven far away.
I stay, I pray
See you in heaven one day.

Four a.m. in the morning,
Carried away by a moonlight shadow.
I watched your vision forming,
Carried away by a moonlight shadow.
Stars roll slowly in a silvery night,
Far away on the other side.
Will you come to terms with me this night,
But she couldn't find how to push through.

[ Repeat Chorus ]

Far away on the other side.

Caught in the middle of a hundred and five.
The night was heavy and the air was alive,
But she couldn't find how to push through.

Carried away by a moonlight shadow.
Carried away by a moonlight shadow.
Far away on the other side.
But she couldn't find how to push
"But I guarantee you, if straight men had a period you would never hear the end of it."
-Margaret Cho
