I one time
I one time found a Chip N' Dale Cartoon Classic Video with donald duck I think it was volume one at an antique store for $1. Anyway when I went to look it up on ebay I saw the same title that I had just bought for $1 one just like it sold for $77.50. So I took some pictures of the video and sold it on ebay. I think I ended up making $50 off the video I bought for $1 at an antique mall. I think this was before Chip N Dale Cartoon Classics volumes were out yet. Anyway there are some videos I have parted with not just because of Upgrading to DVD but like others have said space. And I still have too many videos and probably too many DVD's As well. Then I gotta start sometime with the Blu Ray disc since later this month I will be picking up my Playstation 3 from a gamestop that is half an hour away from where i Live. I pre-ordered it and got lucky too. Some Disney films I have given away to family with little children or to my 2nd cousin who is going to be 3 years old on Christmas Day. So she enjoys them quite a lot. Her favorite one I found at a salvation army. Finding Nemo. Of course now she's into dora the explorer

Those of you who sell your VHS videos, where do you sell them? Besides Ebay I mean. I don't have a credit card, so I can't sell stuff there. I have only been able to sell my tapes at pawn shops, and they only were giving me a buck per video, and 3 bucks for Disney clamshell videos, if they were animated. It was really annoying me, and I had to stop when they said they were no only giving 50 cents per tape because no one was buying VHS anymore. I sold about half my tapes there though, and only kept the ones I couldn't part with without getting replacements for first (which is still a TON).

For those of you considering selling your old VHS tapes, DON'T DO IT!!!! And I don't think I can stress that enough! I have a local video/music store, and they buy and sell VHS/DVD/CDs, and believe me, you won't get a whole lot for them. I have actually bought a few Disney VHS's from them as a temporary copy until I can get better versions on DVD...for example, I got the 101 Dalmatians Black-Diamond VHS there for $1.99. I also got Pocahontas for $3.99 (which was that expensive only because the case and tape was in REMARKABLE shape...almost like it just came out of the package). I almost purchased the VHS of Peter Pan for $1.99 due to the fact that I don't have it at all, but I figured the PE is coming in a few months. And this is the price for PURCHASING these VHS's!! That means that you can sell it to my store, and they will pay you even less than that! And, if you sold a whole collection of VHS's (to make it simple, say 40 Disney VHS's), at $2 a piece, that's $80 for all of them. Honestly, I would much rather keep the VHS's, especially with all the memories with watching them as a kid or whatnot.
But then again, I guess this topic couldn't really relate to me. I only have 2 of my original Disney VHS's. (Or, ones that I had when I was little), which are Fantasia and The Lion King. The rest was actually mistakenly taken by a moving company. (They weren't really stolen, but the movers took them by accident.) So, I no longer have a large majority of my Disney VHS's anyway. But take it from someone who no longer has them: I would do A LOT to get those old VHS's back!

Ok...let me see here:Big Disney Fan wrote:Could you tell me which ones you lost? But then again, I guess this topic couldn't really relate to me. I only have 2 of my original Disney VHS's. Snow White
PINOCCHIO!!! (that is the #1 DAC I'm looking for on VHS...or DVD)
Dumbo
Bambi
(Cinderella??) (I'm not sure I had this one....but I think I did)
Alice in Wonderland
101 Dalmatians- BUT, I have since re-bought it (the VHS that is...and the DVD)
Aristocats
Robin Hood
The Fox and the Hound
The Great Mouse Dectective
(Oliver and Company??) (a BIG not sure on that)
The Little Mermaid
Beauty and the Beast
Aladdin
Pocahontas- again, re-bought it
I also might have had Hunchback and Hurcules, but not sure. But that's 14-18 VHS's lost. And then again, there's a lot of VHS's I never had as a kid for various reasons:
Peter Pan
Lady and the Tramp
Sleeping Beauty
Sword in the Stone (Had it recorded off TBS though)
THE JUNGLE BOOK!! (I will never forgive my parents for not buying that movie-I never owned it, and until TLK came around, it was my all-time favorite movie! But that will all change this October!
But, I must say Big Disney Fan, I am not looking to re-buy those old VHS's (in case you had that in mind)...at least, not at the moment. I might eventually though. I just wish that they never dissapeared like that. Especially since I had almost all of the big-time-classic Disney movies. And, not to mention, I have since replaced almost all of the lost VHS's except: Peter Pan (will get in March), Alice in W-land (currently searching for it), PINOCCHIO, THE JUNGLE BOOK(I will get in October!), The Great Mouse Dectective, and Oliver & Company.

I don't have all the films you mentioned. But here are the ones that I do have (the ones that I also have on DVD and thus don't need the VHS versions anymore):
1. Snow White
2. Pinocchio
3. Bambi
4. Cinderella
5. Alice In Wonderland
6. Lady and the Tramp
7. Sleeping Beauty
8. 101 Dalmatians
9. The Fox and the Hound
10. The Little Mermaid
11. Beauty and the Beast
12. Pocahontas
Do you have Mulan? If not, I can add that to the list, too.

When I lived in Sacramento, CA, there was a store down on the K-Street Mall that sold collectibles for collectible prices, and they also bought these collectibles usually at 50% what they were going to sell them for. I had the 'adult' covered "Little Mermaid" which was being sold for around $500 at the time (only on VHS, there was no such thing as DVD, and LaserDisc was just coming around). He gave me $225 for mine because I didn't have all the inserts that came with the VHS when I bought it. And I saw someone pay $440 cash for it two days later. My "Peter Pan" was sold for $95, and the Widescreen VHS of "Lady and the Tramp" sold for $190. I didn't tell him, but I had duplicates of all of them, and still do to this day. I would never part with my Disney Animated Classics on VHS for all the money in the world. Only those that I was smart enough to buy duplicates of, did I ever sell.
Here in Wichita I have searched for a Collector's store like that one in Sacramento to no avail. I don't think people know what collectibles are when it comes to records or VHS tapes. Most stores will give you $1 to $2 for VHS tapes if they are Disney and less if they aren't.

Most of my Animated Classics on VHS I passed along to my parents/sister. Mostly, I sold the direct to video sequels as I replaced them with DVDs, because my sister isn't too into those. I may have sold a few classics because my family had the DVDs of them too. I kept a few, like the Little Mermaid with the "special" cover. However, despite being a ravenous Little Mermaid collector, I would gladly sell it if someone offered me 4 or 500 bucks, ha.

Like other people have mentioned, I don't think I could sell some of my videos even if I did have the DVDs to replace them. There are so many fond memories tied into all of them. Especially my Mulan video. It was one of my favourite movies when I was a child and it's still a favourite now. I was captivated by it when my mum took me to see it in theatre (in the old theatre of our town to boot, more childhood memories there).
When it came out on video I bought it as soon as I could. I used the $20 my auntie and uncle sent to me for my birthday which is quite a lot of money when you're little. I could only watch it if there was nobody in the room, I just wanted to escape into the movie by myself. I could play the whole movie out in my head because I loved it that much. I'd get the songs stuck in my head for days and I didn't really mind at all.
Call me a kinda corny, sentimental packrat but that just the way I am

I keep my VHS tapes, because of the movie and trailers, and the cases..."Sleeping Beauty", for example, I only have on DVD, but I'd like to buy the VHS version of it someday- ideally, I'd have the VHS (all the different versions) and the DVD (ditto) of each movie, at least the animated classics, if I had the money. And, for movies such as "The Lion King" and "Aladdin", it's worth having the VHS, since the DVD has some stuff changed on it...

Right now, I'm determined to hang on to all my Disney VHSs...partly for the fond memories, partly because of my neurotic inability to rid myself of anything in my possession, sentimental attachment or no, and partly for the sleeves. Even if I did eventually part ways with the video cassettes themselves, I'd still have to hang onto most of those things. I find most of the VHS covers to be visually more striking than a lot of the standard DVD ones, particularly in the cases of the Fox and the Hound, Hercules and the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Sadly, my VHS collection has already begun the steady process of destroying itself from the inside, so its future with me is definitly numbered. My copy of Snow White went mouldy and will probably have to be thrown out, and my copies of the Jungle Book and Oliver and Company, given the state of them, won't be far behind.

So are you telling me that I should keep the VHS even though they're never played anymore. I want to get rid of them, not just because of improved quality, but because the DVDs last longer, are easier to handle and won't break down as easily. Plus, they take up less space on the shelf. I know I won't get much if I sell them, even on eBay and I tried to pass them off to my sister, who's living in San Jose, but she only wants DVDs. So should I just keep them and let them get covered in dust? It seems the only other alternative to selling them is to throw them in the trash. You know how wasteful that is.

What we did with our Disney VHS tapes was that we donated them all to a local daycare center that didn't have a lot of money to buy movies for the kids. I only own one Disney VHS now and only because it has not yet been released on DVD. I never have been one to get wrapped up in sentimentalism. I much prefer the quality of DVD and VHS just takes up way too much space.

I am glad this came up, because I can tell you about what I do in cases like this
Well for one thing I have some advantages to having the same movie in vhs and dvd. For one thing lets say I want to watch this movie, but I don't feel like getting the dvd and putting it in the player, I can just get my vhs copy. You don't have to use as much care with vhs so if I am a little tired and if I allready have other dvds in my player that I want to come back to later when I get up, throwing in a vhs tape right before I go to bed can work like gold

Also I can compare the way the picture looks compared to the dvd and vhs and that can be fun. Plus many times the artwork on the cover is different ect. > Also if I go to a friends house I like to leave my dvds at home, but if I have the same movie on vhs I can bring the vhs copy
Vhs does not damage as easy as a dvd so I don't mind taking my vhs copies to my friends house.
Also with some of my favorite movies such as Bambi and Cinderella. Well with those movies I get extra copies on purpose
When Bambi came out with their Platinum Edition I purchased it on dvd as well as Vhs
Just like I allready have the Bambi soundtrack cd, but I still go on ebay to look for old records that have the music from Bambi, even though I have the Bambi soundtrack on cd and record allready

You can do as you wish, but if you want my advice I will tell you this " Don't throw your VHS copies in the trash " > Like you said it would be a waste to just throw them in the trash. If you can't sell them for much money or give them away, why throw them in the trash ?
What if your dvd copy gets scratched one day ? If you have the same movie on vhs at least you will still have that movie, if you see what I mean. Now I take very good care of my dvds so I have never had a problem with them going bad. But dvds do damage MUCH more easy than VHS.
Understand what I mean when I say a dvd can damage more easy than vhs. I know that vhs can wear out after you keep playing it and a dvd does not wear out as you keep playing it, but I am not talking about that. I am saying that it's very easy to scratched a dvd and all that. Also if you leave a dvd dics out in the open not in a case ( which I never do ) it can get marks on it that will effect playback ect. If you leave a vhs copy out in the open that is not in a case ( which I never do ) that may not be good, it most likely will be okay for the most part at least.
What would be perfect is if there was something that lasted like a dvd in the fact that you can play it over and over again without it wearing out, but like a vhs it does not damage and scratch so easy. Is this the case with Blue-Ray ?
Anyways I would advise everyone to not throw out their vhs copies. If you had a shirt that you really liked and someone gave you another shirt just like that shirt, would you throw you old shirt away ? I think you could find a use to having 2 shirts that are the same, like you can have a back up shirt to wear whenever and one to keep really nice. Just like with a dvd and vhs of the same movie I think you can find advantages to having both of them.

Disney VHS
After having nearly a complete set of the animated classics on VHS and only to upgrade my collection to DVD (have 40 of 45 classics), I have found a good way to utilize my duplicates. I keep all the DVDs in my Sony multi-disc player (no handling smudges) and loaned out all the duplicate VHS to my parents and in-laws, so when their grandchildren (aka my children) visit they have some entertainment at their beck and call. I divvied the set up three ways, so different grandparent homes have different selections.
The second hand market on VHS is very cheap right now. I agree with the earlier post that you rarely would get any value for trying to sell your used collection. As always, there will be exceptions to this dynamic, but you'd be hard pressed to get the kind of money I remember having to pay for some of the rarer VHS (back in the day). DVD appears to be the long term format most people desire for multiple reasons. But if you need a buck or two for each one, go ahead and let them go. A donation to charity is another good option – plug for Children’s hospitals.
