Disney Back to 2D with "The Frog Princess"

This is very exciting news. This makes me very happy to hear that Disney is working on a 2D animation project. The 3D stuff is great for Disney/Pixar stuff, but I'd like to see Disney stick to the original 2D. I'm also very excited to see Alan Menken returning to Disney for this project. Dottie I hope you're right in that this is the beginning of a new era in Disney animation.

The only think that i'm afraid is that during the production of the Frog Princess they might change their mind and do it in 3d instead.

The Animation Guild Blog writes that following a story presentation for The Frog Princess, an anonymous Disney animator, described as being on an A-list level, called the traditionally animated project's plot "fantastic." Interestingly, a comment in the article's talkback defined some of Princess' early pre-production artwork as bearing a style somewhat reminiscent of Hayao Miyazaki' films.

WHAT .... NO!!! That is very upsetting news, I'm hoping it is not completely true. I've been hoping for a long time that "The Frog Princess" would begin a new era in Disney animation. I feel that Alan Menken and Glenn Slater would most certainly be pivotal to the success of this picture. Gosh, I hope this project doesn't get "ruined".

I can kind of understand that Lasseter doesn't want Menken to be on two projects (FP, and Enchanted), but if you want a movie that kicks ass just as TLM, BatB and Aladdin did then you should go for Menken. He has written all the great Disney 90's musicals and it should be him and Ron'n'John to revive that certain kind of Disney film. People would rush out to theaters if the posters said that these three are involved in this movie.
Menken has had such a great impact on the Disney world and Lasseter would be stupid to take him out of a very promising project.

Snap. I don't want to believe it entirely until I hear anything official, but that Randy Newman part alone (I like Randy Newman okay, but I really doubt he could pull off a traditional musical, especially having heard his "Faust") is enough to seriously upset me.

Randy Newman's best song won't be able to compete with Alan Menken on a bad day. Has Lasseter ever listened to the work of this 20 something time oscar nominee??

I understand his decision not to let Alan Menken do all 3 fairy tales but seriously, he's the most gifted musical composer on the planet. If you're gonna do a musical, he's the guy to turn to. He has proven he can handle any style of music. He can easily do two very different things on two projects.

First time I question Lasseters decision.

I personally don't question Lasseter's decision to go with someone else for Frog Princess. After all, we don't want to be stretching Menken too thin and have him be overworked that it shows in his music.

I just question why he has to go with Randy Newman AGAIN. I never really cared much for Newman's style (or voice), and if Lasseter really wanted to give Frog Princess to someone fresh/new to the Disney Animated Classic, he should've gone with someone like Howard Shore or Rachel Portman.

Don't forget Randy wrote the songs for the 2D Turner Feature Animation project, 'Cat's Don't Dance'. A really wonderful, underrated film, with some excellent music, very different to his Pixar work (no Randy vocals present either) . Check it out if you're doubting he's up to the challenge...

Well, I'm rather upset by this news! Cats Don't Dance is not a classic with songs that everyone remembers and were high on the music charts. And if I'm wrong, they definately weren't remembered and as high on the music charts as Disney's Menken-scored films. No Cats Don't Dance songs have been covered time and time again, like Disney's have for current DVDs (badly covered, but still showing how remembered and liked the original songs were). What we want is a hand-drawn animated musical fairy tale like the ones of the Golden Era. We won't be getting that with Randy Newman. Has Randy won any Oscars like Menken?

Also, Randy's songs seem to be more for stories with twists, quirky movies. Don't we want The Frog Princess to be like a traditional fairy tale? And speaking of that, I would prefer The Frog Prince instead of a classic fairy tale "with a twist".

If Disney wants to do something different, why not something that puts the prince as the main character and a princess has to save him from a spell? That's not your regular Princess movie.

I would assume that Disney wants to continue it's famous princess line and introduce a new character that could become the next Cinderella or Belle.

Every single other thing Lassater has done since taking charge is so wonderfully great...but this sucks. Period.

I gotta say I really, really disagreee with this. The last time Disney released a fairy tale was Aladdin in 1992, and that was right in the middle of their animated musical rennisance that Alan Menken led. No one complained that Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin were too simmilar because Alan Menken composed all of them. And honestly, I can't see Frog Princess working nearly as well without Alan involved. It's supposed to be a big return to all-animated-musical form (Enchanted is half live-action), but you don't have the guy who's chiefly responsible for all the musical success the last time you were successful.

My thoughts exactly. Never been a big fan of his. Menken on the other hand, I have enjoyed immensly, even on some of his weaker projects. He never drops the ball, and always brings a unique flavour to the feature. God I hope this is just some sick twisted rumor that will soon be clarified. I was way too excited to be let down like this.
