Phil Collins: No Brother Bear Oscar?

Post by Maerj »

Here is an article from imdb.com:

Collins Refuses To Campaign for Oscar

Phil Collins is refusing Disney's request to campaign for an Oscar for his Brother Bear film score - and won't even vote for his own songs. Collins, who secured a Best Song Academy Award in 2000 for Disney's Tarzan, has been asked by the studio to fly to Los Angeles from his Swiss home to whip up enthusiasm for the new film - but the veteran rocker believes the effort would be futile. He explains, "I don't live in LA and I'm not going to travel thousands of miles to try to talk people into voting for me or twist their arm. That's not my style. The year I won I was up against Randy Newman and he campaigned really hard. But Randy had been nominated nine times before and never won, so I don't think it's the best approach - people like a bit of modest restraint." And the former Genesis star bizarrely won't even vote for himself in the ballot of Academy members next February. He explains, "I don't vote for myself, I never have. I might have won by just one vote, then it would be worthless. I don't vote, I don't tell my friends who to vote for and I don't campaign."

I think "On My Way" or even "Welcome" would be worthy candidates for a Best Song Nomination, but the one that Disney is backing was just loud and obnoxious. So, while I don't agree with him in theory, I won't mind if the Tina Turner song doesn't get nominated or win.

They should be submitting "On My Way," or "Look Through My Eyes," but they're going with "Great Spirits" and "No Way Out." Grumble. So, I don't know. I don't think Phil should campaign if he doesn't want to, if he's not comfortable with it. He already has an Oscar...though I honestly wish he would put some effort into getting the songs heard/known to voters. I want to see Brother Bear get in, but...

But I am beginning to wonder if the film will even get nominated for song now. It looks to be a very strong category this year, so it may be tough for Brother Bear to squeeze in...without a campaign.

I agree. They should put up On My Way or Welcome. Both are great songs with kind of a cool bluegrassy feel that's got a great resurgance.

In all honesty, I liked the Tarzan soundtrack much more than BB, if I was to compare the two. But, On My Way was a really fun song and I enjoyed it. I think they should nominate that one. It's a terrific film, but did get very serious and had some darker moments, On My Way was a nice uplifting song to have in the middle of the film to lighten things up.

"Look Through My Eyes" is one of my favorite Disney songs... It really should take the Oscar! :thumb:
