Who decides Disney DVD releases?
Hi everyone, I was wondering about who decides which DVDs get released by Disney or Buena Vista Home Video. This also applies for other studios, like Warner Bros., Paramount, Sony, etc. I'm thinking that the marketing department decides, but I've never really known. Then I thought that DVD producers did, but then I found out that they just make some of the extras on DVDs, and that they don't decide what actually gets released. And they only make the really long extras, like 2 hour long documentaries, etc. I've always wondered about this. It's a career that I'd actually love to get into. Just wanted to know more about it. Or is it the head of Disney? Or of Buena Vista Home Video? I can't decide! Can someone help me?

I'm thinking like you its Marketing. Even if they don't have the ultimate final decision, they will present the possibilities.
Generally, Marketing in a company knows more about a company's products than anyone else in the company, and it is of course, their job to sell them - which includes selection, price, packaging and researching desire.

Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database
For Disney and Buena Vista DVD's it is the marketing department. I recently e-mailed Disney suggesting that a they release a particular movie on DVD soon (Hercules ...
) and I recieved an e-mail back thanking me for my inquiery that read:
Thank you for your e-mail regarding HERCULES. We appreciate your interest.
We will forward your request for release of a 2-disc DVD to our Marketing
Department for consideration.
Again, thank you for taking the time to contact us.

I sent an e-mail to disneyinfo@disneyhelp.com encourageing them to release 2-disc releases for Hercules, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Black Cauldron
maybe if they recieve enough e-mails, they will re-release "Hercules" next year, hopefully as a 2 disc edition. For me, that is the one I am most wanting for next year. Hunchback would be great too, as well as Oliver and Company (but I am thinking that might get a 20th Anniversary edition in 2008)

well up until I seen Aladdin and Lion King 4 years ago, Hercules was my favourite movie ever
I really want it to get a 2-disc edition that lives up to TLK and Aladdin's Platinum Editions, I also want them to take back that Robin Hood Special Edition that there releasing to make it 2-disc, I only really want 2-discers nowadays

Thanks for the information guys, namely 2099Net and Simba3. That's just the kind of information that I was hoping for. Hopefully I'll be able to find a job in the industry, hopefully at Disney, but I wouldn't mind working at another DVD place, such as Warner Bros. Home Video. I'd love to work there, choosing the DVDs that get released, making the cover art, choosing the release date and the bonus features, that whole idea interests me a great deal. Anyway, thanks for the info guys. I didn't think that anyone would answer this thread. It was much appreciated. Thanks!

I emailed Pixar once about having a Shorts dedicated DVD release and someone emailed me back listing the DVD sets each Short was on and said there was no scheduled release for such a DVD, but she would forward it on to their Marketing department.
That was just info@pixar.com.
I tried contacting Disney Australia about the lack of the "Making of" on the Brother Bear set, but got no reply.

James, when you do get your dream job, don't forget your creepy old forum-buddies at UD - Vee need pre-release info to LIVE! Moa-ha-ha-ha ...James wrote:...
