Enhanced for 16x9 means that if you have a widescreen television, the picture is enhanced for showing on that type of screen. It basically means that the lines of resolution are doubled. It makes for a much clearer, sharper picture. When a picture is not enhanced for 16x9 screens, the resolution is lower, and the picture doesn't look as good as it could.BambiFan87 wrote:what does enhanced for 16x9 mean anyway I never understood that...and I think we should all just wait and see on tuesday if its that bad. dvd guide gave mulan special edition a b picture grade and little mermaid a b+ or something and I thought the picture for mulan was great.
I sure hope that this review is wrong, and it is enhanced for 16x9 screens. It would be a huge letdown, if not.

For those confused about wether or not the film is enhanced for 16x9 screens, I would like to direct your attention here: http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/vie ... 51&start=0
Scroll down in the first post by lighthousemike. You will find a scan of the entire back cover which lists the film as "Aspect Ratio (1.78:1)- Enhanced For 16x9 Televisions."

If not, I may have to pass.
The entire first half of the 2006 review is a repeat of his 1999 review, and he updated the Video/Audio/Bonus Materials sections, though I think he forgot to change the first sentence about the video.

Whew! Thanks for that. I was really concerned, for a bit. I couldn't understand why they wouldn't make it enhanced for 16x9 screens. I mean, even Lady and the Tramp: Platinum Edition was enhanced for 16x9 Televisions! I wonder why that DVD Movie Guide review states it is not?goofystitch wrote:For those confused about wether or not the film is enhanced for 16x9 screens, I would like to direct your attention here: http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/vie ... 51&start=0

Whoa! Let's not get carried away there! You are actually gaining 33% more lines of resolution.MadonnasManOne wrote:Enhanced for 16x9 means that if you have a widescreen television, the picture is enhanced for showing on that type of screen. It definitely is anamorphic widescreen!!!
And as to the person complaining about how grainy it is, and then they reveal they've watched it on a notebook - PC monitors always give a sharper, crisper image and enhance any imperfections in the picture of any DVD. I don't know if the same is true of LCD TV's, but if you watch it on a standard TV, it will certainly not show the imperfections as much as a notebook screen. I think it's ridiculous that we've got someone being so alarmist and then they reveal they're watching on a notebook!

I seriously can't wait! This movie is literally more than a movie, it's a piece of magic! Even if I wasn't a Disney DVD collector, I would still buy this movie! It's fantastic. The Part of Your World (Reprise) scene gives me chills. Ughhhh I want it now!!!

After all this discussion, I want this DVD even more
. I just think we should see the picture ourselves. Personally, I hope that there is some grain left, it is just part of the film structure. But Disney simply wants a clean image. Okay, I can understand that. But then do it rightly, and don't screw up the colors (BatB and Cinderella). I also want to say that the cropping, as seen from the screenshots with the french review, isn't as bad as I thought. Only a small line disappears.

I didn't even notice the disapearing pencil lines even trying to cencentrate and focus more on the picture quality that on the movie itself. Geez, I guess I must really be blind then, just like 90% of the people who will watch this DVD![]()
Again, I'm not saying that changing and restoring badly a movie is good, I'm just saying that, it's not noticeable for most DVD watchers (in The Little Mermaid anyway).
Again, I agree with darth deetoo. Didn't see any particular grainy aspect on my widescreen LCD TV... Even on my 15''4 laptop, the movie looks as great and beautiful, so stop complaining damn it!!darth_deetoo wrote:And as to the person complaining about how grainy it is, and then they reveal they've watched it on a notebook - PC monitors always give a sharper, crisper image and enhance any imperfections in the picture of any DVD. A quote from the DVD Movie guide review about the image comparison between the 1999 LE and the 2006 PE: "The 2006 transfer was significantly stronger than its predecessor. Cleaner, tighter and better defined, it was a clear improvement."
I SO agree with that lol

Gosh, guys, PlutoRegion1 I think it was, posted that what is going on here is rificulous!! I AGREE !!! We've all been lopking forward to this release so much, an now some people( I include myself, since I told the people who complained to shut up) ruined it!!! This is pathetic!!!
We'll all see this week how good it really looks, or not!! But watching the movie on a notebook screen doesn't help!! The picture of all my DVDs is simply awful when I watch them on my notebook. Even the superb LatT!!
So this can't be compared with a normal tv!!
I'll say it again: To most of us it will look better than it ever has. I thought the same about Cinderella and BatB!! Everything will be fine and we should stop making this thread a thread full of attacks and complaints.

I watched the movie a couple times now and I thought the transfer was great. The opening scene is grainy but it's meant to be that way with the fog making everything a little harder to see. After that everything looked really good to me though. I wasn't let down at all.

*sigh*
I got my copy Saturday night, (made a friend of mine break the street date at his store
) and I have to admit I’m a little disappointed...
I LOVE the little mermaid; it is absolutely my favorite Disney movie. In fact it's what made be decide to get the entire platinum collection. But this DVD imo pales in comparison to Aladdin's DVD release.
It’s not completely bad, the transfer is much cleaner than the limited release (which I also own) but some of the colors just seemed off/too strong. Yellows for example were just almost over powering. Anytime tritons crown was onscreen or any character with yellow eyes was on screen it was like they were glowing! Also Ariel’s fin just seemed the wrong color...it was too green looking. And the thing I spotted instantly was a complete change of color in the first song of the movie. The shells that the sisters come out of interior color was changed from a blue to green!
The rest of the movie seems fine; perhaps I was just looking for things that changed so those things stood out. But I was surprised to see they did redraw the priest’s knee.
As for the bonus features the 45 min documentary on TLM is good, but not as good as Aladdin’s. And I’m COMPLETELY pissed that there is NO language reel!
GRR!!! TLM was dubbed in Sooooo many languages so I thought this was a given...hell even Pocahontas has a language reel and it’s not even a platinum release...
I duno, I just hope my R2 DVD is better. I hope I don’t discourage anyone from getting this DVD, its still TLM!!! LOVE IT!

At what part do you freeze frame to see this? I've never heard of Mickey and Co. being in TLM...darth_deetoo wrote:Oh, and Mickey, Donald and Goofy are there. They are mentioned on the commentary, but I had to freeze frame the movie and search to find them, it's a blink and you'll miss them cameo.
