I agree, I was actually kinda of shocked at how different the two versions were. I watched Gojira/Godzilla the same week I watched the two different cuts of Brazil and it was a week of lessons in editing. Two completely different movies each time.
I got it as well. I watched the Raymond Burr version since it had been some time since I'd seen it. I still haven't watched the original Japanese version but I really want to! It just seems like I don't have any free time anymore.
I also got the new Gojira/Godzilla DVD, but have only watched the Raymond Burr version because I watched it with my girls who can't read yet. It was my first time seeing it and I thought it was pretty lame, particularly due to the editing and insertion of the Raymond Burr plotline. Hopefully I will enjoy the original a lot better.
They are like totally completely different movies!! I was shocked at how different of a movie Gojira was. It was kind of..... sad! I usually laugh at/with Godzilla movies, but this Japanese version was pretty serious (for its day).
