PS3 Delayed in Europe! March 2007 Release
PS3 Delayed in Europe! March 2007 Release
And it looks like the US will only get 400,000 units at launch.
Oh dear. Bye Bye Sony. All your lies have come to roost now. You're finished in Europe. Anything you say has not credibility any more.

I hope this doesn't mean that people will buy more Wii's

One of Sony's many lies:

Though usually at a disadvantage when it comes to consoles, and surely all things PlayStation as well, Europe might finally get its revenge. In an interview with UK website MCV, Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe president and CEO David Reeves made one particularly amazing comment regarding Sony’s newfound love (or “commitment” as they put it) for European territories.
According to Reeves, the first PlayStation 3 units to come off the production line will actually be PAL units, and hopefully the PS3 will come out in Europe the same day as in the US:
“I hope we will be day and date with US and I hope that we’ll get the same quantities as US as well”, said Reeves. “I don’t think we’ll be disadvantaged. In fact I believe the first PS3s being manufactured are being made for Europe - which is a first. Between November 17th and December 31st we’ll hope to put them in as many European territories as we can, even if we have to place small seed quantities on day one.”

I'm really not surprised. People that are going to be listing these on eBay, etc... will make a lot this year.
I know Sony was counting on the PS3 to be a low cost Blu-Ray player for 2006 as well. If noone can get them without paying a fortune on a auction site then whats the point? This will just allow time for more HD-DVD units to be produced. I know some of the bugs in the 1st Gen HD-DVD players were worked out though firmware updates, maybe the 2nd Gen will be better and have faster load times.
Personally I think Sony is slowly digging its own grave.

Me too. Rumours are there may be a release announcement at the European Wii event on Sept 15th. Can't wait.Enchantress wrote: Leave one for me
I didn't know which to get but the constant delays and changing of PS3 specs changed my mind weeks ago. Wii for sure.

On top of all of this, GameSpot.com has reported that the PS3 will not be shipped with HD cables. This will only matter on the $599.99 high-end model, which is the only one to have HDMI output. So, consumers are going to have to shell out at least $30-40, just to get a high-def signal from the system.

ooooh I heared it was delayed...My Japanese teacher said it was delayed because Sony is currently struggling right now, because of tremendous sales from Nintendo DS so there trying to make it better or sumthing.

I can't imagine that the delay is the result of tremendous sales from the Nintendo DS. The Nintendo DS is a handheld system.jeremy88 wrote:ooooh I heared it was delayed...My Japanese teacher said it was delayed because Sony is currently struggling right now, because of tremendous sales from Nintendo DS so there trying to make it better or sumthing.
I firmly believe that the delay, and the lower than expected launch numbers, are due to the fact that Sony is trying to push too much NEW technology into their system. They are trying to have the be all, end all gaming system, and things are not turning out as well as they had hoped. All of this technology is expensive, untried, and requires a great deal of time to get everything running as it should.
In the end, Nintendo has the best strategy, in my opinion. The technology is sufficient enough to make great games, it's innovative, but simple, and most of all, gamers will not have to spend nearly as much money. With Wii, we will have a great time, and not go broke doing it!

I doubt the PS2 will get a lot cheaper when the PS3 comes out. At $500 to $600 Sony will want to keep an affordable alternative out there. I could see a drop to $99, but that would be about it.
Will the lack of HDMI cables really hurt the PS3? They should be able to play in 720p, and 1080i over component. However 1080p requires a digital connection, I think.
Blu-Ray may eventually require HDMI if/when ICT starts getting turned on.

I went into my local GameStation today, and the manager said that they're expecting a release date today! He said they'll be an official announcement later this month, but the shops will be told today at some point

But there's rumours that Nintendo are having problems mass-producing the Wii-mote (is that right) to an acceptable standard. When it comes down to it, all new hardware has failure rates.MadonnasManOne wrote:In the end, Nintendo has the best strategy, in my opinion. As for Sony's problems, it appears that there's only one factory producing blu-ray diodes (which sounds crazy to me, but apparently there is only one) and they are getting a yield rate of about 15-20% (ie for every 100 they manufacture, upto 85 are non-functional and have to be thrown away). Because there's just 1 factory (again, I can't believe this, but apparently its true) its affecting the Sony with the PS3, Blu-Ray Player manufactuerers and even HD-DVD manufacturers.
How anyone could expect to release hundreds of thousands of PS3s, Blu-Ray players and HD-DVD players which have a vital component only available from one factory - at this time (apparently) amazes me. It was a disaster waiting to happen.
Sony didn't predict the low yield rates that they are experiencing now. Therefore, I take all of their numbers and future projections with a pinch/grain of salt. Can you even be sure the US will get 400,000 units on launch for example?

All this must be pretty depressing for Sony fans, though I can't honestly say I'm surprised. The PS3 seems to have been plagued by one incompetent blunder after another on Sony's part, and it's starting to get downright funny. Now, apparently, on top of the European delay, the US launch shipment is officially being cut down to 400,000, and the Japanese a mere 100,000. I mean, why bother releasing it at all?
Considering that rather pathetic number, the only people profiting from the PS3 at launch will be those lucky enough to buy one, and smart enough to get rid of it somewhere like eBay for double or triple the price to those morons who are stupid enough to pay it. Sony certainly won't be making any profits, since it's well known they'll be losing several hundred dollars off each PS3 sold for quite a while after launch.
I'd say this will be one of the last generations the Playstation will be a major competitor in the console market... the PS3 is turning out to be Sony's N64, but even more so; and I doubt Sony has the ingenuity or drive to recover the way Nintendo did.
