Okay, I'll give one... :)

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Russell Crowe is my favorite actor, I have to say, and certainly one of the most talented working today. He becomes Captain Jack Aubrey, of the British naval vessel surprise...and is one of the facets of this marvelous film. Paul Bettany gives a perfect supporting performance as the captain's doctor friend. They play music together, have verbal battles...he's more inclined to faith, him to science.

Peter Weir's direction is very assured. Never have battles at sea been captures in such glorious, authentic fashion...seeing these two old-fashioned ships on either side of the screen, lobbing canon balls at each other through the fog, feels vast, and also desperate...there are several scenes that make you flinch, but it never feels like throwaway violence. And the movie uses a wonderful mixture of classical music.

The gist of the plot: the Surprise, of the British fleet, is on the far side of the world...hunting down the French ship Archeron. The Archeron emerges from the fog and cripples Surprise. Surprise pursues it. Until the end of the film, we never really get a clear focus on the enemy. We see it from a distance, or see Surprise through the enemy's telescope...making the cat and mouse game all the more suspenseful. And it is a spectacle all the more appreciated on the big screen.

If you like history, especially, or enjoy the books the movie is based on (by Patrick O'Brian), or like Russell Crowe...if you're wanting a big budget films that's intelligent, and more an art film than a popcorn film, I recommend it. I give it a full four stars. Along with Brother Bear, my favorite film of the year...and I hope it gets its share of Academy Award nominations when the time comes. (Though I still hope Return of the King will win; there are so many good films...)
