'Nemo' Depth: 17 Million Video Copies Sold

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - If you don't know that Disney/Pixar's animated adventure "Finding Nemo," starring Albert Brooks and Ellen DeGeneres, blew every home video release out of the sea last week, then you're living under a coral reef somewhere.

"Nemo" took the No. 1 slot its debut week in release on home video, selling more than 17 million combined VHS and DVD units during its first five days on store shelves, according to several industry sources.

"Nemo" also topped Video Store magazine's weekly rental chart during the same period, earning an estimated $10.45 million.

Meanwhile, Disney's rerelease of "The Lion King" continues to sell very well, maintaining its No. 3 position on the VHS sales chart and slipping one rung to No. 5 on the DVD sales chart for the week ending Nov. 9.

The sleeper home video hit last week was clearly "Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde," starring Reese Witherspoon and Sally Field, which debuted as the No. 2 best-selling DVD, well behind "Nemo." "Blonde 2" debuted at No. 4 on Video Store magazine's weekly rental chart for the same frame, earning an estimated $8.06 million during its first five days. The VHS was priced for rental.

"The Hulk" experienced robust sales on both VHS and DVD, maintaining its No. 2 position on the VHS sales chart but falling from three places to No. 4 on the DVD chart. It was the nation's second-most-rented video last week, earning an estimated $9.65 million for a 12-day gross rental haul of $20.5 million, according to Video Store magazine data.

hmm...wouldn't you think the popularity of the dvd format may affect that?

i know a lot of people still prefer the vhs format, but ... i dunno.... what do you think?

I think people are buying more DVDs than they ever did VHS, by and large, so yeah, it's got a reasonable shot at topping The Lion King's overall sales record, I'd say. But I don't see any way the VHS (or any VHS for that matter) an come close to toppling The Lion King's # of cassettes sold.

Why would you want it to sell more VHS copies? VHS is dead, and good riddance.

Yea I loved finding nemo. It was one of Pixar's GREATEST I agree good ridance to VHS. DVD's are so much smaller and nicer

well now Disney DVDS (specially this) have great extras and stuff what are made to atract everybody to move to dvd, instead of barebones vhs.

It sure did suprise me that Finding Nemo Had Such a big sales rate on the 1st day it was out. I mean i expected it to do well but I never thought in my wildest dreams it would do as well as this. Great Feature. I sure can't wait till they put some of the other Disney Animtaed Classics On 2 DISC DVD Sets.
