The Last Unicorn (Live-Action)
The Last Unicorn (Live-Action)
When will Disney remake this movie? My kids drive me crazy watching the old, really long, one with all the bad music in it all the time.
Anyone else think it would make a good Disney remake?

Actually, the plans for a new adaptation seem rather iffy, since progress has apparently gone backward rather than forward in the last few years, as briefly described here:

Myself, I still have yet to see the original animated version but enjoyed the book when I read it a few years or so ago.

A friend of mine LOVES that movie and sent me the DVD. I just found it okay (a bit weird and it drags a little), but it definitely has qualities that make it an interesting viewing. The music is definitely haunting. Not saying I like it or don't, it's just got that eerie quality that 80s fantasy films sometimes have. Personally, I'm a big fan of Rankin Bass when it comes to holiday stuff and Animagic, but their 2D animation was always pretty bad. Anyways, I heard it was being made in live-action and that Christopher Lee would be reprising his role in it. If they manage to make it, should be interesting to see.
Between budget and fights over rights, the live action movie is at a standstill.
Should Disney remake it? Only if they keep true to the story, as they did with Narnia. If they tried to change it into anything else then what it is....NO. I would take all my Disney DVDs and burn them if they turned TLU into a movie where the Red Bull spoke and King Haggard danced and sung.
Now in the ORIGINAL BOOK, there was singing. The unicorn, Molly, Schmenrick, and a few other characters sung. They were not eleaborate songs. Usually just a portion of a song, other times, they had a whole melody. I would love to see a movie made with those songs in it. Beagle's original songs put into the movie would be nice.

They should do a live action Black Cauldron Trilogy along the lines of
"Eragon" "Narnia" "Lord Of The Rings" & "Harry Potter".
The books are good.
The movies just boring cos it was the 80's & no-one cared before Little Mermaid, so if it got another chance as a sassy action/fantasy movie
kids would think its exciting and fresh.
The 3 Witches in the movie are funny.
They could get funny commediannes like Ellen & Rosie O' Donnel to
play them.
And someone trendy to be the Horned King.
I can't think of anyone off the top of my head but you know.
As for Last Unicorn being Disney?
Eww. Its totally not. Thats like when people say that stupid Spirit movie
is Disney. The Public are globally delayed.

Have you ever read the original "Little Mermaid" or "Cinderella"?
Changes, when the movies are being made for kids, are for the better sometimes.

I think they should just leave the cartoon version the way it is and not mess around with it. I happen to have a weak spot in my heart for all of those Rankin and Bass productions.enigmawing wrote:Yeah, it's been in preproduction for a while (and not by Disney) and I don't have my hopes up for the live action version.
I don't know if it would be considered a remake of the original film or more of a new adaptation of the book.
Oh, and I happen to like the music in the original.
And the book is very good, by the way. (Peter S. Beagle wrote an episode of "The Little Mermaid," I've heard.)

This is not Disney...But still, if it ever came to them making this movie...
No, I wouldn't like that. They would add unnecessary changes, diminish characters like Molly Grue of their complexities and turn all the grey villains into a black and white morality. It would probably end with the Unicorn marrying the Prince, and that goes against the original ending and the important message it carried off.
So, no. I wouldn't want Disney to touch this jewel with its greedy little hands.

Re: Anyone else think Disney should remake The Last Unicorn?
I dont know if it should be remade. It was released around the time I was a kid, but I never saw it until recently. So i dont have any nostalgic fondness for it like some others do. The first thing that struck me when I watched it was how outdated it felt, especially the music, but I didnt hold that against it as I enjoy many other older films that are equally outdated. But I didnt really care for the beginning & first midle of it. Then she turns into a human & they introduce this badass old guy who kinda looks like Magneto from X-men & I thought it then got really good.
Also I saw an old crappy dvd version of it from Netflix. I believe later on it was restored so maybe I should rewatch the restored version...
so the thing is I could understand a remade version thats more accessible to todays kids as even I found much of the film hard to get through, but at the same time I think remakes are getting out of hand, & a remake will probably go overboard & oversimplify it, so, I dunno...

NOT DISNEY!!!!
As much as I would love to see a Lord of the Rings/Harry Potter type adaptation of this story, the only way I would be behind it is if Peter wrote the screenplay again and for a studio that takes greater care for it's live action special effects movies (I don't care how much money Alice, Oz and Maleficent made, they are mediocre fare). The animated film is brilliant and it's only real hang ups are some budgetary technical issues. It was artistically realized through and through.

Not really. Disney would probably sanitize the story--I can't imagine them keeping the somber ending and its implications intact--and I'd rather not see that happen to one of my favorite fantasy films.
The live action that was "in the works" a few years ago was apparently not official, unfortunately. Whatever group was behind it kept posting notices of who was cast (including both Christopher Lee and Mia Farrow) but when those people were contacted they had no knowledge of the project and were not actually involved. A shame, I think we could use more live action fantasy... although the style of the book would best suit a fantasy film from the 80s, not today where every fantasy film seems to need some big CGI battle.

Oh, wow, at both these projects. I'm definitely in for both!

Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ ~ "The Fate of Ophelia"
Taylor Swift ~ "Eldest Daughter"
Taylor Swift ~ "CANCELLED!"
