What movies would you include in your great movie ride? Would you have a lot of classic films, a bunch of blockbuster hits, action, drama, comedy, dramedy, mystery, suspense, horror, animation...or how about a mix of all of them? Please don't just submit a list of movies. That's not really saying much. Here's your chance to create your own ride! What scenes will you pass? What kinds of special effects would you use? What sorts of Disney entertainment magic would you add in? What types of Guest attraction interactions would you introduce?
In this thread, you have the chance to let us take a spin on your imagination through the movies of yesterday, today, and the days to come! Don't worry about what Disney owns and what they don't. Movies you can use are not confined to studios or companies.
Me? Oh you want a sample? That's going to have to wait as this may take me some time .

As many as your heart desires! But not too much in that we end up having a ride lasting longer than a half hour. I guess use your own judgement and know your limits.

I guess since the ride is 22 minutes long, we could probably just follow the format they already have:
-Musicals (Footlight Parade, Singin' in the Rain, Mary Poppins)
-Gangster Pictures (Jimmy Cagney)
-Old West (John Wayne, Clint Eastwood)
-Sci-Fi (Alien)
-Action/Adventure/Horror (Indy Jones, horror pictures, Tarzan)
-Drama (Casablanca)
-Fantasy (Fantasia, Wizard of Oz)
For my own "Great Movie Ride", I'd do the following:
We start in the queue line, which will continue to showcase various movie props and costumes. I hate to say it, but I'm tired of seeing Mary Poppins' merry go round horse and the Indy Jones props, so along with the Narnia overcoats, I"ll replace these with, say...Sam's piano from Casablanca, the four overnight bags from What's Up, Doc?, and the costume/mask/jetpack from The Rocketeer.
After this, we get to the queue line with the trailers. I don't mind the trailers they already have, but they take up only 10 minutes, then repeat. I'd probably make it longer and add trailers for a couple genres that aren't represented. The trailer for Bringing Up Baby would represent screwball comedies, the trailer for Laura would represent film noir, and the trailer for When Harry Met Sally would represent romcoms.
I'll update this later, as I can't pick out what movies would represent the genres...

I love the ride so I'd probably just tweak it a little.
At the last scene for the musical section, I'd love to add Chicago right before it transitions into the gangster era pictures. I think it'd be a smooth transition into more gritty content.
For the Sci-Fi section I'd love to add a Star Wars scene, or even Star Trek. Star Wars, because of the music, could probably transition into the action section featuring Indiana Jones.
For fantasy, right before Wizard of Oz It'd be neat to see something with LOTR of Harry Potter.
I don't think they should add LOTR or Harry Potter because The Great Movie ride is supposed to be about al the great old classic films so with those films in there it would seem out of place.

I never really felt that it was reserved just for old films, just films that really stand out in culture. For example neither Aliens nor Indiana Jones were exceptionally old movies when the Ride opened (I think the both series were still ongoing).
As generations grow older there probably has to be some kind of balance. A 5-year old isn't really going to get the Cagney or Signing in the Rain references as much.
It's a fine line with a ride like that because you have to keep it relevant to modern generations but you can't make it look like a cheap movie tie-in. I think LOTR and Harry Potter will likely stand the test of time.
I would make the Fantasia part a little more exciting. All I saw was video on the ceiling of Mickey Mouse on the crag, which is not very exciting compared to some of the other films shown. I would have him with fountains around him shooting water up as he waves his hands. Maybe some fog effects & some comets. Something to add a little more "oomph" to that section.
I always wanted there to be a Fantasia themed ride somewhere in the Disney parks.

well, these arent really rides:
But Fantasmic has the Chernabog sequence, and Sorcerer Mickeys fireworks finale in FANTASMIC!
And the Fantasia sequence in Mickeys PhilHarMagic
Not to mention the old stomping grounds: Fantasia Gardens Mini Golf.
the whole Gardens side is all fantasia theme w/ character statues from the movie and Bald Mountain in the middle of the course.
and the Fairways side has holes named after sequences from the movie.
Now- as for movie rooms for the attraction itself:
POTC - featuring Barbossa & Jack Sparrow dueling around the cursed Cortez gold chest w/ hologram/optical illusion image of them transforming for human to cursed forms- if they can pull it off in Imagination attraction- they can do it again...
Narnia - The first scene where Lucy first walks into Narnia & encounters Mr. Tumnus, or outside the white witchs castle w/ all the stone creatures out front.
E.T - the outdoor scene where E. T & Elliot are in the woods using the communicator E.T constructed.
Hook- when Banning/Pan first flies & "flies" across the room w/ the lost boys all cheering him on below.
Princess Bride - the fire swamp scene- or maybe outside the Miracle Max house.
Harry Potter - the great hall w/ owls flying around the top dropping mail & resident ghosts passing through the room.
Star Wars - Darth & Luke dueling it out from the scene in the 2nd film (PS- I JUST saw New Hope & Empire Strikes Back for the first time in my life that i can recall ever last weekend...now just need to see all the rest)
Batman - The Bat overlooking Gotham city from the roof tops w/ Jokers laugh heard throughout the room.
Scary Movie - house scene w/ sidney on the phone & the killer hiding behind a corner w/ his cell.
The Santa Clause - the workshop w/ elves & the train, Charlie, Scott & Bernard - bernie giving charlie the magic globe
Spiderman - Spiderman swining through the buildings of NYC w/ Goblin on his hover craft and M.J watching from down below.
Free Willy - aquarium stadium scene w/ the kid & Willy doing tricks. (c'mon- everyones seen & knows this movie... dont hate! haha)
thats all i can think of for now- im sur ei will update as i think of more
Awesome attraction, Fidget1234! I like that you used a lot of family films. They may not all be classic movies in the eyes of movie enthusiasts, but you picked a lot of classic family films from recent times! good work! I can't wait to see more!
I'm still figuring mine out.

I'm pretty sure we talked about the proposed Fantasia Attraction at Magic Kingdom at WDW. The plans for this attraction ended up being Fantasia Gardens.
The original attraction would've been a renovation of the original Swan Boats that sailed in the moat around the hub in front of the castle. The Swan Boats have been gone for a while and they're the reason why there's a really fancy sitting area by the water at the hub. I think they use that section now for getting bracelets for Extra Magic Hour. Anyhow, here are the Plaza Swan Boats:
After reading the plans of the original attraction, it sounds like a great layout and scenery for a Lazy River type attraction at a Disney water park or a Disney Hotel Resort.
I think they should update it every year or so, because frankly, the world of film is so big, there's no way the attraction can hold all of it.
But if I were an Imagineer, and was hired to change it for the first time, here's what I'd do:
Like Escapay, I want the props and room of trailers to be updated.
Then for the actual ride, well I think the format that Escapay posted should remain the same, just with different choices:
Musicals: Singin' in the Rain and Mary Poppins can stay, but why is Footlong Parade there. In don't think that film, or the song are hugely popular. I'd replace it with a scene from "Chicago". It's popular, well-liked by almost everyone, and it's Disney owned, so they don't have to pay license or anything.
Gangster Pictures: Eh, this can stay the same, as there's isn't any gangster films that pop into my head that drastically need to go here.
Old West: Ditto to Gangster films.
Sci-Fi: I'd get rid of it. Its had it's fair share of time, and there are plenty of other films in this genre to replace it. How about the scene from "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" where Anakin gets sent to go to the building on the lava planet to kills those aliens? It can use the same set up, as it's a similar type of room for some reason, plus, it's very popular film, so that wouldn't be a problem, also, I think I think they can somehow make Darth Vader come out and scare kids like they do with Alien.
Action/Adventure/Horror: The mummy thing and Tarzan can stay, but we got plenty on Indiana Jones at MGM Studios, so that's what I would get rid of. How about National Tresure? Similar type of film, it's Disney, and wouldn't have to change that section too much.
Drama: Casablanca can stay.
Fantasy: I think the Wizard of Oz segment pretty much HAS to stay as the Wicked Witch animatronic is what people say is the highlight of the attraction. But Fantasia, way too short and unimpressive. Make the effects look actually stand out and have an anamatronic Mickey, then it'd be fine.
And then, the film already got changed, but more could be done, and replace Nemo and bring back TLK!!!
Perhaps if they ever build a Great Movie Ride in the Walt Disney Studios ride at Disneyland Paris, they could slip in some European films. Or some more recent films. The Imagineers changed parts of the Parisian Storybook Land Canal Boats trip (they took parts of the Californian version out, they put new bits in), so I presume that they could do the same if WDS got the Great Movie Ride.
Fidget1234 wrote:the whole Gardens side is all fantasia theme w/ character statues from the movie and Bald Mountain in the middle of the course.

ok- adding on to what i already posted above-recapping on what I would already add: POTC, Narnia, E.T, Hook, Princess Bride, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Batman, Scary Movie, The Santa Clause, Free Willy, Spiderman- nice- love these movies- all classics.
some movies i'd still def keep in the attraction: Alien, Indy, Wizard of Oz, Fantasia- but def have Mickey in the attraction whether he be an AA or a live Mickey.
Other movie rooms I'd add to the attraction:
Jurassic Park -yeah, they're all over IOA...but still a jurassic park room at the attraction would be cool...lookit what they did w/ the dinos in Ellens Energy Adventure & Dinosaur- wicked fun!
Goonies - I'd go w/ the scene where the gang is in the room where the bone piano is.
Edward Scissorhands - the ice sculpture garden!
Who Framed Roger Rabbit - not sure if i'd rather a toontown scene, or the scene where they're in the warehouse at the end.
Forrest Gump - bench scene of course w/ forrest jabbering on about his life story.
ID4 - Will kickin alien booty at the end w/ Jeffs character.
Charlie & the Chocolate Factory: The room that looks like an oasis where everything is edible!
Polar Express- when the train first pulls up to the kids house. (kid never had a name in the movie or the book now did he?)
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves: Im not sure if i'd go w/ a battle scene or a love scene.
other movies I'd go with- but unsure of what scenes i'd use:
West Side Story
The Godfather
Back to the Future
Superman
Well, first off, I love the ride as it is and wouldn't change it (hope they haven't already), just pollish it up a bit and make it run more smoothly. Of course, I'm very nostalgic and get upset when they change things in the park (not when they add things, just when they take 'em out or change 'em), usually because the changes or replacements aren't very good.
Having said that...
Okay, here's my Great movie ride:
First, I don't think I'd take out Mary Poppin's horse from the line or anything else, but I might add some stuff. In my fantasy ride, there wouldn't be any outdoor waiting in line like in the summer (it's too hot in Florida). There would be more of an inside area. Also, someone before mentioned adding more trailers to the previews in the waiting area. I'd also like to do that. Wouldn't take out any, but I'd add some. Not sure which, but probably really OLD ones.
The ride would would have the same start and ending, the scenes would be chronological in the sense that it would go from silent, to sound, to color, etc..., and, yes, there'd be some stuff that is already actually IN the Great Movie ride. It would go as follows:
First, silent films, with some of that cooky silent film music blaring. We'd probably see Valentino and a couple of dramatic ones first (I'm not big on dramas, so I can't get specific there), then some horror, the highlight being the removal of the mask from the Phantom of the Opera. Last we'd see some silent film comedians in a big city scene, with Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and whoever else would work. This would move into the talking pictures by having Steamboat Willie amongst the comedians, either animatronic, or projected on a wall. From here, still riding through the big comedian display, we'd see Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, Cary Grant trying to avoid Katherine Hepburn, the Marx Brothers, Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney, and the Three Stooges (with Shemp!). I'd work in Priscilla Lane somewhere, because I ADORE her. King Kong woud be on top of the Empire State Building in this scene too. Lastly, we'd move into a desert scene, where Hope and Crosby are riding on a camel and singing, "Road to Morocco."
From Hope and Crosby's desert scene, we'd do the Casablanca bit, like in the existing ride. Next, some Swashbuckler types stuff, Robin Hood, Tarzan, and something representing movie serials, like the old Batman or Flash Gordon. Then, we'd be amongst Universal Monsters: The Wolf Man, Frankenstein, Dracula, all separately, then all together, with a reprise cameo from Abbott and Costello, ha. This would be followed by a Scrooge montage, and next, we'd be in a department store, where Natalie Wood is meeting Santa Claus (Miracle on 34th Street), and we'd head outside, where it is snowing on us and Jimmy Stuart is running giddy down the streets, "I'm alive! I'm alive!" This would change to the gangster stuff, similar to what is already in the Movie Ride. Then, the Wizard of Oz, first black and white, and then Color. This would be the intro to color. Then, we'd see Gone with the Wind (some lovey scene, then the fire, then the famous last words), followed by an early Disney animation montage. This would have Silly Symphonies, Snow White, Pinocchio, Bambi,... it would lead into the Fantasia scene of the real ride. Next, we'd go through Disney's Treasure Island and then The Music Man, Oklahoma, Singin' in the Rain, Danny Kaye, and a big musical collage with the old Busby Berkely bit in the middle. Then, Rebel Without a Cause and Jailhouse Rock. Also, probably something with Marilyn Monroe, but I really need to brush up on my Marilyn Monroe. This would go to some stuff like Shaggy Dog and Absent Minded Professor, and then schlock horror like The Fly, The Blob, I was a Teenage Werewolf, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and drive-in type schlock. On to some Groovy type stuff, James Bond and Martin and Louis, and Merlin Jones with Annette, The Pink Panther, and then the really weird stuff. We'd also catch up with another collection of Disney animated feature characters here, whether live-action or an animation projection montage it would end with a ride through Mary Poppins (starting with the Penguin scene).
On to Logan's Run and the Planet of the Apes. Then, Star Wars, where we'd first be in the beginning scene, wher Vader is on Captain Antilles's ship doing some strangling. Then, we'd follow the droids to Tatooine. We'd see look, looking to the sunset. Then, we'd see him get his lightsaber from Obi Wan, and we'd ride through the cantina. Then, we'd be on the Death Star, we'd pass the trash compactor scene and then see the Death Star getting blown up. Next, we'd see Blazing Saddles and ride through the classic Wonka Factory, followed by the Shining and the Exorcist (a bedroom scene). We'd also meet Damien. Next, Disney's The Black Hole.
Okay, I'm pressed for time right now, so I'm going to speed this up and probably leave a lot out. As it is, I probably would have included more, mainly a lot of Disney live-action classics. In the rest of the ride, amonst others, we would ride through: Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Muppet Movie, Young Frankenstein, Superman, E.T., Jaws, Tron, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Weird Science, Ghostbusters, A Christmas Story, Temple of Doom and Last Crusade, Teen Wolf, Three Amigos, The Little Mermaid, a major Roger Rabbit experience featuring a Toon Town scene with lots of characters (including Bugs Bunny and others), Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Dick Tracy, The Interview With the Vampire, Mummy, Jurrassic Park, Ace Ventura, more big Disney animated/live-action hits, the Star Wars prequels, Lord of the Rings, a big superhero montage, and it would probably end with the new King Kong or with Narnia.

It's funny, because when I first rode GMR and the Fantasia sequence came about, I thought we were in the middle of the tornado from The Wizard of Oz, considering how fast they switched scenes. I personally think that's a much better idea any how.

*tlm
Believe it or not, before some rights issues got in the way leading them to shove in a quick Fantasia segment, that scene in The Great Movie Ride was supposed to be a Wizard of Oz tornado scene...
