New DVD Thread IX: At Money's End
I bought the 2-disc special edition of V For Vendetta at Wal Mart this afternoon. No more DVDs this month except for The Weird Al Show and Arrested Development season 3.

I been really lax about updating my new purchases over the past couple of months and only noting a few in this thread, so it's update time.

Cybill - The Complete First Series R2 UK
I used to love this show! Some great episodes although I wasn't familiar with any of them. I think the show probably hit it's stride around season 2.

Are You Being Served: Series 1 and pilot R2 UK
Mrs Sloacombe has a pussy

Are You Being Served: Series 2 R2 UK
Mrs Sloacombe worries her pussy will get frozen stiff

The Cat Returns R2 UK
I have to say this charming film completely won me over. I'd say that after Howl's Moving Castle this would be my 2nd favourite Ghibli film.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind R2 UK
Interesting to see the beginnings of Ghibli. Was a good film, wasn't amazed with it though.

Waiting For God Series 2 R2 UK
A few brilliant episodes, but on the whole not as strong as S1.

Maid Marian and Her Merry Men S1 R2 UK
Netty will be happy I got this!
A few good episodes although a few were a bit slow. I think it probably hit it's stride it later series as I don't remember any of these episodes, it probably the later ones I'm familiar with.

Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story R2 UK
Was slighlty better than I was dreading, I felt it held up better than most of the TV eps.

Eddie Izzard - Definite Article R2 UK
Without a doubt his best show! I had a tatty old VHS of this for years and I thought it was about time I upgraded! Genius!

You Rang My Lord - Series 2 R2 UK
This show definitely got stronger in the gap between S1 and S2. It manages to capture the same sort of feeling you get with shows like Hi De Hi.
and finally...
even though I hate myself for doing it...
kill me now...

Shrek 2: Double Disc Edition R2 UK
I have to admit the animation was better than I remembered from when I saw it at the cinema, not on par with Pixar though. Although I still found the story weak. I mean all those people who complain that the DTV Disney sequels repeat the same story as the original but ever so slighltly twisted and then rave about this need their heads examining IMO. I cringed at half of the pathetic jokes and pop culture references. But I some of you would bite my head of I completely ripped Shrek 2 apart (again
) so to keep you happy I'll say one thing in its favour! At least it's not Madagascar!

Had a little splurge yesterday, but it's ok (for now):

The New World R4 PAL
One of my favourite films of last year finally comes to local DVD, so I snapped this one up as soon as I saw it. It isn't meant to be out until Thursday, but for some reason my local JB Hi-Fi had it out early and I wasn't complaining. Nor were the other shoppers - it was the last one on the shelf with a lot of empty space around it! Can't wait to sit down and watch it.

The Proposition R4 PAL
Despite being an Australian film, been considering getting this from the UK for a while now. That edition was said to have 2 hours of bonus features (as opposed to 13 minutes in this version). Two things stopped me: the questionable aspect ratio of the UK edition, and the cost. When this hit the bargain bins over the weekend here, I broke down and shopped locally. The film is magnificent, and is one of the truly great westerns ever made, and not just because it is Australian! Fine performances from a largely Australian/English cast (including Guy Pearce, David Wenham, Emily Watson, Ray Winston and John Hurt), I can't recommend this enough.

Family Guy - Seasons 1 and 2 R4 PAL
Bargain bins may just be my ultimate demise! While I struggled to get into this at first, my sense of humour has slowly developed towards the random. While FG certainly over-does the randomness at times, I've been giggling away at these since last night.

Lonesome Dove R4 PAL
Having recently finished reading the epic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, it was great timing that the DVD of the mini series came out here this week. About bloody time too! Love my westerns, and with a cast that includes Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Danny Glover, Rick Schroeder, Anjelica Huston, Diane Lane and Robert Urich, you really can't go wrong. Watched a bit of it, but I've still got about 6 hours to go...

I got King Kong today, I've always wanted to see it, and gave into temptation today.

I got Full House Season 4 and Simpsons Season 8 @ Best Buy so I could get my points. I don't understand that new Reward Zone point conversion thing that's going to happen come September 18, so I thought I'd better get my DVDs there while the points were still 100 per $1 spent. I got the non head packaging......even though Maggie head was so cuuuuuuuuuuuuuute! I need the packaging to match the rest of my dvd cases, with the exception of homer which had to have the send away for replacement packaging....
Disney Channel died when they stopped airing movies with Haley mills (Parent Trap and Pollyanna) and fun adventure movies like Swiss Family Robinson. R.I.P. the REAL Disney Channel. Date of Death: When the shows became teenie bopperish.

The Brothers Grimm R4 PAL
Got this one as a freebie with some review discs. I first saw this last year in the US - at the AMC Theatre in Downtown Disney in Anaheim of all places - and really enjoyed it. Not sure why it has managed to get such a bad rep. Got to love everything Mr. Gilliam does, and I hope that he one day gets someone to back Don Quixote to completion!

The Hills Have Eyes - Unrated R4 PAL
Isn't officially released here until October 25, but thanks to my illustrious position as a reviewer, I managed to get a full preview copy. I know this will get me smacked by horror fans, but I actually prefer this film to the original 1977 Wes Craven film. Blasphemous? Perhaps. But the original film may have had its time and place, just as this film deals with the American fears of today. If the whole film isn't a parody of American machismo and the blind following of a corrupt government, then I'll eat my own heart!

Extras - Series 1 R4 PAL
This BBC/HBO co-production, with the original star of The Office Ricky Gervais, is a must see for anybody who loves movies and the movie industry. It is also a must for people who enjoy good, satirical comedy. With guest stars including Ben Stiller, Kate Winslett, Samuel L. Jackson, Ross Kemp, Les Dennis and Patrick Stewart, there is a little something for everyone here. For Gervais-haters, he is probably less annoying in this than he is...elsewhere.

The Chaser's War On Everything - Season 1: Episodes 1-13 (2 Disc Set) R4 PAL
One of the best Australian comedy shows to come along in years, it is also one of the most insightful political commentaries in a group of TV networks that seem to avoid any tough questions. God bless MY ABC. Get ready to meet the Surprise Spruiker, Osama Bin Laden and his crazy subtitles, The Crazy Warehouse Guy, and What Have We Learned From Current Affairs This Week?

Picked up the following 2 in a sale:

ITC 50 R2 4 Discs
A sampler compilation of 18 highly regarded (well, apart from the dross that is The Adventurer starring a seemingly asleep-at-the-wheel Gene Barry) ITC series. Sadly, none of Gerry Anderson's Supermarionation® series are included. But we do get episodes from gems like The Saint, Danger Man, The Prisoner, The Champions, Department S, Jason King and Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased).
This will keep me going until Network's often delayed complete Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) set it released (currently scheduled for the end of October - I already have the complete Carlton discs)
Wikipedia: ITC Entertainment

World In Action Vol 1 R2 2 Discs
I weep. I literally weep when I consider the state of current affairs programmes on ITV these days. They're either "infotainment" on consumer scams, or Trevor McDonald slumming it on his "Tonight" programme where the level of journalism hits such highs as "Mobile Ringtons: Too Annoying?"
But once upon a time, when TV was good and not full of soaps and celebrities, ITV used to kick the BBC's arse when it came to current affairs - all because of World In Action. This set includes 6 ground breaking World In Action episodes spanning the years 1968 to 1991. Here we see TV that could change the world.
The final paragraph on World In Action's Wikipedia entry says it all:
"World in Action's demise in favour of the more populist Tonight with Trevor McDonald was criticised by some as part of a "dumbing-down" of ITV, although conversely the decision was praised by others with more commercial imperatives."
Wikipedia: World In Action
I also picked up:

Hancock's Half Hour Vol 4 R2 2 Discs
This is actually the complete 6th series. Yes, hard as it may be to believe, the BBC does have some complete series from the 50's and 60's in its archive! Timeless comedy, which will never go out of fashion.
Wikipedia: Hancock's Half Hour (Radio & TV)

Most Haunted Series 6 vol 1 R2 4 Discs
The Most Haunted DVD releases switch distributor from 2|entertain to Contender, and the switch is good for everyone involved. This is a handsomely packaged 4 disc set (yes 4 discs) meaning with 2 other volumes for the 6th series, it will be a jaw dropping 12 discs. Derek's final series includes loads of episodes, Most Haunted Extra footage for each episode and a specially comissioned documentary.
