Disney DVD Collection Tracker

Post by 2099net »

I'm starting to collect ideas for a online DVD Collection tracker for members of this forum. I would like to know what features you would want in such a system:

Do you want to input all the disc details yourself?
Do you want to select from pre-defined lists of titles?
Do you want to put comments about a disc for everyone to see?
Do you want to rate the discs and the supplements?
Do you want to link to the list from anywhere on the web, or just on this forum?
Can you upload scans?

Any suggestions welcome.

I'd be interested - ive got my DVD's listed with DVD profiler - it seems to be a more "presented " way of showing DVD's than other ones i've seen. It has lots of info and is dead easy to load ur DVD's on to , so something similar would be good. A link to bcdb or imdb would be good for the really in depth info on films & shorts. I,m always checking info on bcdb so having a link instead of opening another window would be great :) I have a scanner with which i am starting to replace the blured cover pics on my profiler but i'm not sure how to upload on to the web or forum?

I can handle image uploads and resizing through the browser.

The main question is... how would you input the disc details? Once a disc was in should it be selectable by other people? Should it be editable by other people? How do we handle regional variations, or even country variations? A PAL R2 English disc has different specs than a PAL R2 French disc for example.

I'd like to hear as many suggestions as possible before starting work. Good point about imdb and bcdb listings - that will be included. :)

One of the things ive noticed with dvdprofiler is its huge database - the DVD's are input by the barcode number on the back of the box so each regions/country's different spec's are catered for . They are updated by people who are registered to the site and who upload the details of the disc,s when they get them , for example i got simpsons year 3 on its first release date in UK but it wasn't on their database but there were at least 3 other versions from the states and europe that people had already input but they all had different barcode numbers.

Alright 2099.... your Q's are bolded... my A's are italicized...

Do you want to input all the disc details yourself?
No... takes too much time.
Do you want to select from pre-defined lists of titles?
Yes, but it would be also good to have the option to add by typing if wanted.
Do you want to put comments about a disc for everyone to see?
I think besides the disc details that in my opinion you should put in, everyone should have the ability to add whatever comments they want about the DVD. In short... Yes  .
Do you want to rate the discs and the supplements?
Very much! Since i think we all respect each others opinions here on Ult.Disney, and if not, no eachothers taste about stuff, and im sure we'd all like to know all the info possible about the DVD's :D .
Do you want to link to the list from anywhere on the web, or just on this forum?
Meaning.... what exactly? i don't get the question...
Can you upload scans?
I can't.... so if you had a place where we could upload pics and such on your site.. that'd be awsome!!

Juts to tell u 2099, im really excited about you doing this, and if and when you actually complete it.... you can be sure i'll be the first to sign up! :)

Keep up the good work!! :thumb:

I think in this instance, it'd be a lot better to aspire to DVD Aficianado's simplicity than DVD Profiler's complexity. Where it's just a list with a link to buy, the studio, the film or films included, etc.

Something like a count of the people who have it would be neat. I think user submissions for discs would be good...and if we could leave a little spot near the top for comments, additional profile, and a profile picture. I plan on offering this just for regular forum members and not anyone who so wishes, anyhow.

Can somebody give me a list of all the soundtrack formats for a DVD? I don't mean languages, I mean the technical soundtrack information.

For example

DTS
DTS-ES
DD 1.0
DD 2.0

etc.

Thanks!

I've decided that the system will work best with 2 levels of access. Those with a higher level will be able to submit film and disc information which will go on the master database. Those with lower access will only be able to select existing films (or maybe even only discs) from this master list. However, updates can be suggested if information on the master database is incorrect.

A big worry of databases like this, with lots of people updating is unnecessary duplicates. (I'm going to try and write some fuzzy matching logic into Access to discourage duplicates). Hopefully the 2 levels of access will prevent most of this.

At some point in the distant future (probably well into the first quarter of 2004) I'll be asking for beta testers. These beta testers will probably end up being "Ultimate Disney Database Administrators" for the tracking application!

I would like some feedback from R2 members: How do you want to list R2 discs - just by region or do you want your own version (ie. R2 France, R2 Spain etc). How would I do Scandinavian discs? Are these one entity, or should Norway be different from Sweden etc? I'm mainly thinking of soundtrack and subtitles on these discs.

I'm going to let people rate various aspects of the discs, so they can vote on the movie, the supplements and even decide which supplements are 'fluff'. :)

I just stumbled upon this thread in a search for something else (some of the best threads on this forum often turn up this way, it's like an accidental treasure hunt). Did anything ever come of it? It sounds like a very cool idea.

Is this list going to be Disney Specific? I like my DVD list to be Disney Specific, my personal list AND the one's I'm looking at, I don't much care for other people having The complete Buffy the Vampire Collection (though I admit to owning it too!). I'm here for Disney, and only Disney.

If it is Diseny Specific, I think there should be a section (or column, whatever) that specifies what verson you have i.e. Limited Issue, Gold Collection...etc.

Picture uploads are a must! Perhaps a limit of four or so per person instead of for each and every one? I'm sure you can fit 60+ dvds in that amount and still have one picture to show off any 'jewels' you may have.

Sorry guys. I did about 40% of the database design (if that) and abandoned the project. I'm working long hours most weekdays now, and can't find the time.

I'm supposed to be learning .NET though, so I may resurrect this idea in the future as my .NET self-training project.

Sorry.

It's ok, Netty, we all only have as much time as we have. Just keep us posted if it becomes your .NET project (hopefully it will).
