I've been waiting a LONG time for this. I love Star Trek, and I really enjoyed the animated adventures of Star Trek. I own two VHS tapes that have 2 episodes each. I've been waiting for the DVD release, and it has now been officially announced!

Animated Series on DVD Announced!

CBS DVD and Paramount Home Entertainment today announce the DVD release date of the highly anticipated Animated Series. Formerly known as The Animated Adventures of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek, the four-disc set will hit stores on November 21, 2006.
The title now shortened to Star Trek: The Animated Series, the set will include all 22 episodes of the classic Roddenberry show, which originally aired on Saturday mornings in 1973-74. A final frontier of sorts, the Animated Series is the last of the Trek catalog to make it to DVD.

Creator Gene Roddenberry's animated version of Star Trek features the voices of nearly the entire cast of the original live-action series, including William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, James Doohan, Nichelle Nichols and Majel Barrett, as they embark on the further adventures of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Comprised of 22 episodes, the four-disc set includes the Peabody award-winning episode "How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth,” Walter Koenig's "The Infinite Vulcan,” which was the first episode ever written by a Star Trek cast member, as well as a number of episodes that serve as sequels to original Star Trek episodes. Many episodes were written by veterans of the original live-action TV series, such as D.C. Fontana and David Gerrold, and the show won a daytime Emmy in 1975 for Outstanding Children's Series.

My God, that's a miracle... but are you sure there isn't a type somewhere and that MSRP isn't actually $135 or $1350? That would match up closer with Paramount's shameless rip-off policy on the current Trek sets. You'd think Criterion were issuing the bloody things.

I was impressed with that price, as well, but, that's the price the official press release states, and I've seen it listed at several other websites. This is exciting. You do realize that Paramount has lowered the price of several of the season sets from each series, right? I'm just waiting for them to lower all of the season set prices, and then I'm jumping all over the Star Trek: TNG sets! I've got Season 1 and 3, as of now.

I'm pretty pumped about this. I haven't seen any of the episodes, just short clips and stills here and there. I've wanted to see it for a while though, I'll definitely pick it up, especially at that suggested price.

I hope the packaging doesn't change from the design, looks real good to me.

Did they lower the price on the orignal series sets? I've wanted to pick those up but just can't see paying that much for them.

I actually like the packaging, as well.

As far as the price of the Original Series sets, I checked last night, and they haven't lowered the prices of any of those, from what I can tell. I had heard that they were lowering the price, a few sets at a time, across each series. I'll just keep holding out for them.

Wow!! I am all over this like a blanket. Can't wait for this highly anticipated release, and the price - well it is hard to imagine that they are going to try to rip off the public again as they have on all the other episodes.

Checked with my local used DVD dealer - CD Tradepost - and when they get them in, they resell the Star Trek series episodes sets for $24.95. Now, I would pay that for a collection, but $99 is just to rediculous a price to pay.

With regards to discounting, there have been two waves so far.

First Wave: TNG 1-3, DS9 1-3
Second Wave: TNG 4-5, DS9 4-5

My guess is that it will take four more waves to get everything at a reasonable price.

Third Wave: TNG 6-7, DS9 6-7
Fourth Wave: VOY 1-3, TOS 1-3
Fifth Wave: VOY 4-5, ENT 1-2
Sixth Wave: VOY 6-7, ENT 3-4

Keep in mind that these are not official plans, just my speculations based on what we have seen so far.

I would give some credit to the change in management at CBS/Paramount for the lower MSRP on TAS. Also, TAS does not have the same rabid fanbase that the other Trek shows have, so charging $50 for these 22 episodes would not be as profitable as the price they have chosen.

Unless the Trek sets are going for the same price as most other shows ($50-60 CDN), I'm still not interested. With Blu-Ray eventually set to replace the entire format, there's little point in buying such an extensive collection (28 collection seasons) on a format like DVD when most Trek series would benefit from HD transfers.

Also, if Paramount is under new management, perhaps the HD Trek sets won't start out so overpriced when released.

Besides, I've held off this long (and I'm a pretty big fan of Trek), another few years probably won't kill me. It really kills me I can't watch any episode from any season whenever I want, though.

Nope, Loomis you won't beat J.J. Abrams he will probably buy all Star Trek series since he makes tons of money and is a big Trek fan.

It looks like this was too good to be true! Either Paramount/CBS DVD made a mistake in the initial press release, or, they realized that fans were ready to jump all over this release....the SRP has now been changed, from $35.00 to $62.99! Damn them! I found this out, by visiting www.videobusiness.com , where they have a story about releases being promoted at Comic-Con. In the article, they stated an SRP of $62.99. I thought that had to be a mistake, since I read the official press release at StarTrek.com. I went back to the official site, and alas, the price has been changed there, as well.

Greedy a--holes! As much as I'm tempted to pass on this release, because the price is now nearly doubled, I will still probably pick this up. It just sucks that they put out the price of $35.00, only to nearly double it.

That seems to be the trend nowadays: give the fans of a series something exciting, then reveal something disappointing.

I would have bought the set on release day at the $35 price point, but now I'm going to wait for a good deal.

What a dissapointment... looks like another Trek series I won't be buying. It's quite unfortunate, actually... Trek is one of my favourite franchises, and all I have are the 2-disc versions of the movies... absolutely none of the shows, whereas I have dozens of other shows on DVD.

I agree, completely! It's an absolute failure on their part. If you do get rich, and buy Paramount, I'm behind you 100%! In fact, I would be happy to take a job there, and help you set them straight. Call me up!

I do believe I will pass on this release, at this price. There are too many other DVD's coming out during that time, that I want much more, and won't cost near that much.
