Could someone please tell me if they know why PM isnt included in the Disney/Ghibli dvd releases. PM has a single disc dvd and wasnt distributed by Disney like all the other films.

Scroll down to July 5th's update. It's getting 2-disc treatment under the Disney name sometime in the future.

Princess Mononoke is distributed by Disney, just under the Miramax branch because Mononoke was "too scary" for little kids.

As others have said, this is coming out in the next Disney Wave of Stuido Ghibli Films, in a 2-Disc Set.

I can't wait! I really like this movie, and it is probably one of my favorites (after Howl, & Spirited :D )

 I'm sorry I mixed you up! You misunderstand.

I meant "Mono No Key". That's how it's pronounced. OK? :)

I could very well be wrong, but I believe Miramax's video release of Mononoke predates any Disney distribution deal for the rest of the Ghibli catalog; I'm pretty sure Mononoke came out on DVD in 2000, 3 years before Kiki or Castle.

Yes, but also remember, Kiki's Delivery Service came out on VHS from Buena Vista, before Mononoke.

the Kiki deal on VHS predates the current deal. Kiki's North American rights were purchased as a one off when the movie came out. Disney distributed the movie across North American.

At the time that was all Ghibli did. Central Park Media also made one of these one off deals, which is why they had the North American rights to Grave of the Fireflies. And they did such a good job on the release we wont complain.

The Disney Tokuma deal was signed in 1996(which predates the launch of DVD by a year). The deal was in response to the huge success of Monokoke and included that film. Thus the Miramax release was part of that deal.

I would imagine we are going to see

Princess Monokoke
Tales of the Earth See and one other

I remember seeing an interview somewhere where the voice work for either Only Yesterday or Ocean Waves was underway and that was over a year ago.

That would leave one movie to be released with the currently titleless movie being worked on by Miyazaki and the shorts collection as the final wave. Anything after that would be a one off release or a reissue.

Of course there is still all the Pre Ghibli releases of which Lupin 3 is one which is on the release schedule.

Good points Mr. Toad:

I think this is how the rest will be released:

Wave 5
Princess Mononoke: Special Edition
Tales from Earthsea
Only Yesterday

In Wave 5, I wouldn't be surprised if both Only Yesterday and Mononoke remain on the Miramax branch.

Wave 6
Ocean Waves
Ghibli Shorts
New Ghibli Film (Miyazaki's?)

But that would still leave us with Little Norse Prince Valiant, which has a Region 2 subbed release, without a US release.

I know that this is a little off topic, but is My Neighbor the Yamadas a good movie? It looks a little cartoony to me.

I wasn't too fond of it, but some people love it because it is unique.

I confess I didn't know much about the deals between the studios. My first introduction to Miyazaki was when I saw Mononoke on DVD at Epcot's Japan; it looked so interesting I had to check it out, even though anime had held very little appeal for me to that date. Needless to say, I'm glad I picked up the film...even though it's no longer even close to my favorite Miyazaki film.

Fflew - The Yamadas was certainly my least favorite of the Miyazaki films. I found it slow and did not enjoy the animation style. It is the only one I would really think twice about buying.
